- The younger brother of the famous Lucius Lucullus Licinius, Marcus Lucullus was a dedicated Sullan who enjoyed a quieter form of success. We know a reasonable amount about him thanks to his friendship with the prolific letter writer, Cicero.

theres something charming about still using a low quality microphone even after all these years, its like seeing the same restaurant open as an adult that you went too as a kid
Nice backhanded compliment!
I can't tell the difference
Thersites strikes again!! Excellent as always
Thanks for covering these figures
I deem Lucius Lucullus Licinius as one of the greatest roman general, on par with his contemporary Sertorius.
His swift campaign against Tigranes in Armenia was a masterwork, but Pompeus did everything he could to jeopardise Lucullus campaign efforts against Mithridates and appropriate the merits of Luculli gains in Rome.
Curiously Pompeus got spanked badly by Sertorius in Spain, stole Marcus merits for the Servile war, made the Lucullui succeses his own and got spanked again (and for good) by Cesar, and we still call him "Magnus", like the proverbial "Miles Gloriosus" by Plautus.
While Lucius Licinius Lucullus was a brilliant tactician, I think the fact that his army mutinied against him, and he was unable to get it back under control prevents him from being a truly great general. Being able to win battles is just one part of a good general's needed skillset. Maintaining the morale and discipline of your troops is just as important (if not more so), and Lucullus failed big time in that regard.
Literally my favourite playlist on RUclips
I needed another Lucullus story in my life
Very informative thank you. Now go for the roman scandals.. 😉
For those like me wondering what a steer is, it's a type of cow. So a very unequal fight.
Nice series
The battle between the steer and the elephant , organized by the Luculli brothers, could have been more interesting than you seem to think if the elephant was of the North African subspecies. This subspecies was only about 2.5 m. (8 ft 2 in)) tall at the shoulder, quite small compared to the African bush elephant's 4 m. (13 ft). The North African elephant was used by the Carthaginian army, but died out during later Roman times.
Aurochs bulls could have a shoulder height of about 1.8 m. (71 in).
There still is a difference in size, but a fight between these two now extinct animals may have been less unequal than expected.
Oh, I wasn't aware of that. I suppose that could account for why it was a memorable confrontation.
👍👍👍
I have a feeling that Memmius episide will be memetic.
Ah yes!
The guy who extended The Second Servile War in a fit of petulance.
It must have been very frustrating to have your command taken away when you were just about to win a war, especially a war against slaves where there wasn't much glory on offer.
31:20 A rarely covered Roman fight with Thracian. Most depiction just depicted as if they were there before annexed by Roman. The only influential Thracian in Roman history were Spartacus
What do you mean? Unclear.
@@theletterw3875 What's unclear from that statement? Thracian against Roman are barely covered in youtube and i'm happy there's an actual record being mentioned(in this case, the Bessi tribe). That's it.
@@iseeyou5061 "most depiction just depicted as if they were there before annexed by Roman." This sentence was unclear but you explained it better now.
I can't wait for an episode of The Real Housewives of Rome staring Gaius Memmius.
Even better, just wait for the episode of Maury when they bring out all the Senators to find out how many of them are NOT the father 😂
That end😅
So he's Eli Manning?
Thersites what do you plan to cover after the Roman’s of the late republic? I know your Byzantine series is on going, but what I’m most interested in knowing is wether you’ll be beginning your Seleucid or Antigonid videos in 2025
Getting some bussy in Macedonia much?
My money's on the steer . They're tougher than you think hahaha 😂
Why bother saying Before Christian Era? Just say BC we know what you are trying to say.
Why backseat drive the guy's style like this? Just deal with it if you understand the meaning.
*Before (the) Common Era
Because its cringe as hell
Academics, specially historians, tend to, linguisticly, be very avant-guard to counter their otherwise dead field of expertise.
Womp womp
It's BC, not bce.
Down Vote.
