This song was released when I was nine years old. My two brothers were eight and seven years old. That was the year that my dad left my mom for another woman, and we were thrust suddenly into, among other things, poverty. My mom was not a strong woman, diagnosed with sle (lupus) in '62, and mentally she had issues. So, it fell to me to take care of the boys. Many years down the road, the boys chose lives of crime and addiction, and I finally ran to Alaska. Today, the oldest of my brothers is gone, and the baby was recently released (again) from Federal prison. He has reached out to me, and even though I am 62 and he is about to turn 60, he is still my baby brother, and ya know what? He still ain't heavy. Indeed, it is a beautiful, moving song.

Allan Clarke had such a beautiful but powerful voice. I always get a bit emotional with this one. I love the essence and sentiment of this song - the world would be a much better place if we were just more helpful and empathetic to others.
P.S. I've always thought that at this point in time Clarke (especially his hair) looks like the 1970s version of Foreigner lead singer Lou Gramm.
P.S.S. I've mentioned to you several times before, Harri, that if you love the harmonica you absolutely have to react to Supertramp's School, the most haunting and mesmerizing opening harmonica sequence is rock history, IMO.

The drummer is Bobby Elliot one of the greatest technical drummers, ever. The singer is Allan Clarke and his vocals are just brilliant and boy could he play the harmonica. The Hollies made so many brilliant songs, too many to mention, even the Beatles were always interested in what they were up to and admitted their harmonies were better than there own.

I was in the Army when this song came out and it was, and still is one of our favourite songs. We were all brothers in Arms and this song resonates with soldiers in many countries. We were trained not to leave anyone behind and we travelled many long, long roads together at at times we needed to carry a brother and he was never to heavy, and for some the road was a road of no return.

The great Alan Clarke, who used to sing in three part harmony with Tony Hicks (on guitar and backing vocals in this video) and Graham Nash, who left the group before this record to form Crosby Stills & Nash. Clarke and Nash had been childhood friends from back in the 50s and the three of them did of course the great songs like Bus Stop, On A carousel, Carrie Anne and so many more...

The song is unfortunately a memory for me of four of my brothers that I've lost. I'm the youngest of six boys, in between two sisters. My oldest brother was 29 killed in a motorcycle accident in 1979 of course the song was played at his funeral. 8 years later two of my brothers were killed in a car accident in February 1987, again this song was played. The toll it took on my mother and father was unbearable. My father died in 1989. We had a reprieve for a while and then in 2011 my second oldest brother died in June, and again this song was played. I have one brother left, he's 10 years older than me, we don't have much in common but we do cherish this song!! It was his favorite song when it first came out we were pretty tight family and it was his idea that this song must be played, and I'm grateful for that. Being the youngest I looked up to every one of them, two of them went to Vietnam they both came back but unfortunately when I'm died in the car accident. And my one brother is still here he made it back from Vietnam. But he struggles, with the loss of his wife in 2015, and his oldest son to suicide in 2016, I can only be there for him, cuz he ain't heavy he's my brother!!!

Nice job, Harri. Love The Hollies. Lead vocals are so strong. He makes one little slip in the lyrics of the bridge. It should be: "If I'm laden at all/ Then I'm laden with sadness/ That everyone's heart/ Isn't filled with the gladness/ Of love for one another...." He says "sadness" instead of "gladness." It happens. Just beautiful.

I have this song on a usb stick in my car. I have loved it since it was released when I was 15. It chokes me up to this day whenever I hear it; and if there was ever an anthem to live by, this is it!

My favorite version of this song was done by the Osmond Brothers. They’re family and their harmonies are beautiful. I believe this song was important to them because they had 2 brothers with disabilities.

Hello again , Debbie. "Bus Stop" is one of my top 5 favorite songs also! Harri needs to play it for all of us. Enoma reacted to it some time ago and loved it. Bring back the sixties!

It's melancholic, the harmonica, perfect for this touching, beautiful song. Another great review Harri ♥ ☺.

The Midnight Special is a great place to see and hear music.
It was the only show back then that was truly live. If you enjoy
the harmonica you definitely need to listen to Neil Young.

I always got vibes, thinking of all, of life, this is an outstanding song, lyrics especially, and maybe the best song of the Hollies ever, I remember all that ProgRock guys like me was in ProgRock, but they all !! loved this Hollies song too, so so much. And even after decades I got so much emotions when listeníng, and Alan Clarke was a real good singer.
