So without the wire 2 things happen: (1) the mount is loose around the handlebars with only the tension of the screws that bolt in the mount brackets holding it in place - so with enough pull force you'd end up with the antenna travelling vertical and yanking the mount up and down. (2) so having the wire wrap around the back of the handlebars directly and attach back to the mount - it tightens up the extra tension and functions as an anchor to prevent the previously mentioned up and down motion wihtout it.

You could always attach the mount to your bike and go riding wihtout the wire and see what happens - it would completely negate the point of having the antenna keep the line out and away from your front tire and axel.

I don't get the purpose of the wire threaded around it as a last step. What useful function does that serve?

The safety cable helps to stabilize the adapter. It's included in the package.

Basically it's the main fastening system to hold the adapter in place and avoid it to bend down. The rings don't provide enough tension to support a heavy basket.
It's not a safety redundancy, but the main fixture.

@@OxKing You are correct - the "rings" or U-bolts (made from 100 percent plastic) will break if the load it too heavy. This is why I have abandon using these products. To help insure the U-bolts will not slip, cut an inner tube and wrap it around the mounting metal tube then add the U-bolts. Again, not a good design for securing the mount.

They probably forgot to add two rubber stripes. Added and it holds firmly.

@@bobcatt2294 UNFORTUNately the only other option on the market is the same antenna except with a "mount" that wraps directly around the head tube with zero reinforcement or bracing. It can also be installed between the handlebars and headtube (requiring removing the handle bars and down tube mount); which doesn't healp much if you already have a bike dialed in and tweaked to your liking or are not mechanically inclined enough to do the surgery. Bikes shops will attach it for a fee but will not gaurantee any of it anyway.
