Vaults of Terra:Dark City (spoiler), Adeptus Mechanicus revealed the throne has at best 100 years left. They made a deal with dark elder to fix it. Inquisitor found out about it and gave chase to a haemonculus who was working under the palace through a webway portal. Book ends with the portal collapsing and the Inquisitor with a Custodes looking up and seeing an exact replica of the golden throne, just waiting for the emperor to power it. It's implied that the dark elder wanted to the Emperor's DNA to clone him, or it is designed to siphon the Emperor's power away.
If the emperor found guilliman much later, the size ultramar would not have been 500 worlds it would of been 5000 worlds And if the imperium collapsed ultramar would be guilliman byzantine empire and The last Stable piece of the empire I could definitely see the elder and the Croftwoulds helping guilliman and them becoming part of that empire

The new successor chapter Angels of Death (M42) is great. A neophytes astartes implants mutated. It made the neophyte grew tremendously in strength. He ran out of bullets and literally PUNCHED a heretic marines head clean off.Guilliman made the neophyte Chapter Master (Raziel Yamro) and is good friends with his primarch dad, Guillichad. Another marine, Amutes Calgea had a steel bar go through his head, lost an arm and leg after saving his brothers from.a.grenade. Mechanicus put him into a Dreadnaught due to his valor. Because of the steel bar damage, they had to leave the helmet on, and cut the top of the dreadnaught off so his marine helmet is visible and he can see. He adorns the top of his Dreadnaught with the skulls of enemy leaders.
See how bad El'Jonson would have been as Warmaster? He and his mob of traitorous heretics would delight in war crimes and crimes against Humanity. He is the truest reflection of the Corpse Emperor. Dark Angels are as great a threat to Humankind as the Primordial Annihilator. And Rogal Dorn? A pathetic failure. His defense of the Imperial Palace failed; only the withdrawal of the Iron Warriors. He failed in his ONE JOB to function as the Emperor's PSD. Then, caught in the Cage of Iron, he showed his utter incompetence, and poor quality leadership. Eventually, his Imperial Fists were EXTERMINATED in the most ignominious fashion: under the boot heel of an overgrown Ork, rendering him disgusting chewing gum under the Xeno's foot. And that was after Dorn's own foolish death.
Many books has pointed out their flaws. Arrogance, pride, rigidity and adherence to a top down command structure. It makes them predictable, beginning of the Horus Heresy they were absolutely wrecked because the opponents knew their tactics. Corax and Guilliman would do wargames and would often win, but after a few Guilliman was able to decide strategies to win. Their rigidity also is what helped them remain loyal and avoid the away of the chaos gods. Some of their successor chapters are bad ace. Such as the brand new one in M41/M42, Angels of Death.
I don't care if they are the UltraSmurfs and everyone loves ragging on them. I am a HUGE Ultramarines fan! Always have been, always will be!
