  • This is not a small place by any stretch of the imagination. It’s Northernmost extent touches Great Preston, and it follows a diagonal route South along the banks of the River Aire to where it meets Barnsdale Road, which runs alongside the Western edge of Ledston. It’s defined as a semi-rural village, although recent developments have increased its population to almost 5,000.
This is a place that’s known mainly for two main industries - pottery kilns and coal mining, both of which are mentioned on the many local information boards around the village. The river has always played a vital part in history here too. Coal is what brought this community together - literally. It began life as several smaller communities which have all merged together over time to form one continuous urban area.
Since it has is a common place-name within Yorkshire, “bywater” was added to distinguish it from places such as Chapel Allerton and Moor Allerton. It literally refers to the village's proximity to the River Aire. This appellation is first seen its Latin form in 1258 when it was called “Allerton juxta aquam”
Coal mining in the area can be traced back to the 15th century. In the 17th century bell pit mining took place in the Southeast corner of Hollinhurst Wood. When the collieries closed, 1,060 jobs were lost and millions of tonnes of coal were abandoned underground. These days there’s none of that industry left, and remains of any workings are minimal. The Lines Way though is a reminder of the way this part of West Yorkshire once was.
After walking through the Millenium Village - a brand new development - we find the site of Ledston railway station, which wasn’t in Ledston, but rather in ALLERTON BYWATER.

    ALLERTON BYWATER ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
    - Allerton Bywater also had a fifth pub up until the late 2000s, known first as Davitt’s and later as The Bag and Barrow. The pub is now the cheesemongers/cafe called Samuel Valentine which featured in the footage.

My mother was from Bowers Row. My gt grandad moved there from Ireland to work in the local mines. My grandad was born there and he also went in to the mines, he worked in the Albert and Victoria pit. My mother and siblings were born there and moved eventually when the houses were classed as unfit for human habitation. After seeing some photos of Bowers Row I can understand why.

Andy I'm going to send you an aerial map image for you showing the layout of the NCB Allerton Bywater site in 1978 superimposed on it. It gives you an insight into just how big it actually was. I was actually working for the NCB then at the North Yorkshire Area Headquarters with its entrance on Park Lane. They were sinking the drift mine then just behind the headquarters. The shot-blasting managed to damage the gas main to our staff canteen and it was mid-winter so we all had to put up with cold lunches when the weather was frosty and icy. Brrr. I drew the map myself from memory onto the aerial view image. Haven't as yet found any photos of the site from when it was still operational though. Besides the colliery and headquarters there was the Training Centre where the memorial is now on Leeds Road and the Road Transport Dept on the other side of Barnsdale Road A655 in Ledston parish. On the Allerton Bywater side back then there was a Nortons Builders Merchants behind the northside approach to the railway bridge. I think the NCB still owned the land it was upon but it wasn't classed as part of the NCB site.

Yes it was a vast site. It incorporated so much of the modern day Millennium Village, including the station. Madness how much of it has disappeared.
That bit over into Ledston I think is some kind of plastics manufacturer now, if memory serves me right

@@TheVillageIdiot yup but it extended into the triangular patch of scrubland to the south.. There was some kind of loading facility in that piece when the railway was operational.

What's more our old staff canteen is still standing lol. Looks like it is used as some sort of office accommodation. And the street down the side of it off Park Lane was the main vehicular access to the Area Headquarters complex. Fell off my chair so to speak whilst on Street View late last night. It's just after the grass field on the bend of Park Lane coming from Barnsdale Road. Think the side road is called Bramwell Road or something now.

We also had a 5th pub up until the late 2000s I first knew it as Davitt’s and later The bag and barrow, although I’m unsure of it’s name prior to Davitt’s I’m fairly certain it had a different name before as Davitt was just the name of the owners at the time in the late 90’s/early 2000’s. The pub is now the cheesemongers/cafe called Samuel Valentine which featured in the footage.
