One point I wish I'd made to really drive this home: Like I said in the video, imagine what it would be like if this E3 there was almost nothing new announced for Switch, despite being in its second year much like the Wii was in 2008. But also remember that back then, Nintendo Directs didn't exist. 95% of Nintendo's announcements were made during E3 and the rest of the year was mostly quiet. When Animal Crossing was the only "traditional" game they had to announce, that really was it for the foreseeable future. Suffice it to say, that was the year I discovered the Xbox 360.
Tell Nintendo the Switch needs a Trophy/Achievement System reveal for e3 this year. Seriously, some of us have been wanting that for a long time! It's not so much about virtual trinkets as it is the way achievements can open up games in new ways and provide gameplay possibilities we might not have considered or tried.
The difference is that they did not need to have a good E3 in 2008, because they dominated everything, had incredible markedshare, third parties. The situation today is very different. Nintendo barely has any markedshare, few big third parties, a console that is graphicaly inferior to the competition.
What's crazy is that the Wii had a pretty great start as far as core games go. The first year and a half saw Twilight Princess, Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime 3, Brawl, Mario Kart, Super Paper Mario, Fire Emblem, Battalion Wars, Excite Truck, and Mario Strikers Charged... and then all that momentum just slammed into E3 2008 like a brick wall. And you know what really gets me? The fact that they didn't even mention Wario Land: Shake It, a game that came out _literally later that month._
@@icecoldnut5152 iwata was kind of adorable too when he would deliver charming dialogue in Nintendo directs while sometimes doing completely unrelated comedic stuff like having charming interactions with Nintendo employees or making funny remarks and comments
You say 2008 E3 was horrifying. I say 2015 E3 was the most devestating one. They had a puppet show that most people hated, and Iwata said they will try to do better next time. And he dies few months later. The devestating part is not the puppet show, it was the last comments he got that were mostly people hating the puppet show because he couldn't go on stage and show he was sick.
xthelegend89 I think it would have been taken a lot better if it had been used, say, last E3 presentation. I like to think it’s because Nintendo was in a bad spot and people wanted Nintendo to start being more “mature”.

I plan on starting with the Splatoon tourney semifinals...then moving to the E3 Showcase/Direct/Presentation...then having Treehouse on every day from start to finish. Since Nintendo is once again saying that this E3 is going to be filled with soon to be released (IE 2018) games, its going to be one rocking E3 for Nintendo fans, I'm pretty sure. Although I fully expect some 2019 smatterings in the presentation (like Metroid Prime 4, which I think will be 2019). It is truly a glorious time to be a Nintendo fan, as the company seems to be firing on ALL imaginative cylinders when it comes to the games they are putting out. Wow, I’m so glad that I didn’t watch E3 back in 2008. Was too much of a casual gamer to care back then. But boy am I glad Nintendo stepped up their game with presentations over the years!
Peter Eberhard that really is ironic, isn’t it? Perhaps not the best market to tap into, but at least now they’re trying to appeal more to the “hardcore” gamers or whatever you want to call them
My first E3 was 2011, which was from what I remember pretty good. I don't remember watching 2012, but I checked the website a lot. 2013 was their first video presentation, so I watched it after the fact. 2014 and onward was when I started watching the entire presentations. I'm so glad I didn't watch E3 in 2008. But then again, I was like 6, so it's not like I would've been interested anyway.
Man, I don't remember 2008 being that bad because for some reason, I was thinking that this was the E3 that New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Golden Sun: Dark Dawn and Metroid: Other M were revealed. But yeah, that was pretty bad.
OMG HAHAHAHAH ARLOOOOOOO, I ALMOST DIED @ 7:19 The clasic stranger coughing and babby crying bit. (Wipe tear from face) well played my friend... well played 😆
Keanu Reeves was the first celebrity that wasn't super cringy when they got on stage and started talking about the game. Also Sales talk: *exists* Arlo: all I feel is pain inside
This was it, the moment when my heart broke, when I knew there was not going to be a new Starfox, F-Zero, Metroid, Golden Sun, DK..... ANYTHING! I ALMOST went to get an XBOX 360 after this presentation, weirdly enough, I bought Okami like a couple of weeks after this and it renewed my hope a little bit. Next year was amazing, even though some of the games ended up being letdowns like Metroid and Golden Sun to a certain degree (Now THAT'S a game series I want to see concluded). All in all, going "online event" was the best thing they could do, all of them have been pretty good save for the BotW one, but at least the game ended up amazing. (I also think 2013's presentation was pretty lackluster IIRC).
I love Nintendo and bought every console. But sometimes I wished that Nintendo would realize that all we care about are good games. No we don't care about all the different ways you can play the game. Yeah sure that's nice that you offer that new HD rumble okay sure. But all I truly want are great games.
If what we got were just "great games", then Nintendo wouldn't be Nintendo anymore. Something I really admire about the company is that, by adding in new concepts to play, they strive to make gameplay experiences to always be something different than what you get on other platforms. Their philosophy is to always keep up with their business in a way that prevents things from becoming stale. That being said, while the Wii was certainly a nice era (especially in the beginning), their focus was indeed much more so on "new concepts" rather than delivering on what gamers wanted. Today, the Nintendo Switch offers so many options to play, but thankfully Nintendo does show that what they're really focusing on are on delivering products that will make getting the platform a rewarding experience for the player; not exactly because you can play at home or on the go as you please or because you can separate your controllers for multi-playing, but because the games really are showing quality standards and the options the Switch offers to play those games do cater to how you want to go about your gameplay experience. All in all, how they are doing things now is much different (and thankfully much better) than how they did a decade ago.
Drewsefer89 To be honest... I kinda think it should be a balance. Let me explain... I think Nintendo should continue to make casual games and experiments like Labo or the Wii balance board BUT those games should not be the ONLY thing that they should focus. That was a big issue during the second half of the Wii era when Nintendo basically went only for the casuals (with this E3 being a perfect example of that).
A lot of people don't want a system that reinvents the way games are played. There are million who just want to sit on a couch with a controller with two analog sticks, two triggers, two shoulder buttons and four face buttons. I hate motion controls even after playing the 'good' wii games. The Switch was a good idea because it changed where you could play, but not really how you play. It was a concept with a good practical idea.
Kazoorion I never said Nintendo wasn't Nintendo before the Wii. As a matter of fact, they managed to reinvent the video game industry with the NES, and, by that, save it from the doom that the video game crash of '83 cast upon it. After that, the SNES allowed to nurture the industry with much more creativity, and while the N64 and GameCube didn't triumph in their day over their competitors, they always brought concepts that reinvented things in one way or another. Not to mention, many of their games are highly regarded classics that, in many cases, influenced game design pretty much forever. The reason why the Wii was such a poster child of "Nintendo being Nintendo" was because the impact of its revolution (no pun intended) reached out to way more than what they anticipated (even with their blue ocean in mind), which is why, for better or for worse, things got a bit out of hand in the second half of its era, and, to a larger extent, influenced the philosophy of their following home platform.
As a budding musician, I was actually extremely excited for Wii Music when I saw it at E3. I couldn't wait to change up the songs with different instruments and even play the drums for real like they showed, especially since I was a drummer. (And it didn't disappoint on that front either; in fact, it is literally my most played game on my Wii, with I believe ~180 hours logged.) They definitely could have presented it better, but even today, they nailed the presentation of the Labo (another thing aimed more at kids but could be enjoyed by anyone who was willing to be creative), and there were still many gamers who rolled their eyes and laughed at it.
You seem to think E3 is for the consumers? No. It is a trade show. It's whole purpose is for the companies to make deals with big store chains like walmart and toys r us and buy shelf space in stores, to display their products. They opened up E3 to the public back in the day for publicity and it never went back to being a closed trade show like other trade shows (see mining, and other industrial trade shows). Trade shows are meant for the industry, a place where nintendo can make deals with store chains, pay big money for so much shelf space for their products. That's why only those with a press pass could get in to the trade shows for years, and then people started abusing what constitutes a journalist- anyone with a blog on the internet, which open the floodgates for regular people getting access to the shows. Finally the trade shows started allowing all the public to come in and see everything they were selling. The sales talk is for the people the trade show is meant for- not the consumer, the people they are trying to sell millions of units to and rent display space from game stop, walmart and other stores. If they do a good pitch, they can sucker in a department store to buy millions of wii fit balance boards and store them in their warehouses because they think it's going to be a hit.
This can't happen again. People forget, but this was during the 2-year period when E3 was downsized. In 2007, all three companies held mediocre stage shows and interest was way down. In 2008, Nintendo gave up on E3. They literally weren't trying. And we know this because a few months later, in September, then had their own little event where they made much bigger announcements, including the DSi. They held all the important stuff back from E3 because the event was no longer worth it. This is why, in spite of being one of the worst E3 conferences of all time, it's also the most forgivable. Sony in 2006 and Microsoft in 2010 were in no such situation. They just plain failed. In fact, Microsoft put on a stage show in 2010 that made basically every single mistake Nintendo had two years prior. They've had a couple of snoozers since, but Nintendo never put on a show this flat-out bad when E3 mattered, and as long as it does, they will never do so again. So rest easy. In fact, if you want to consult the past for a hint of the future, consider this. Nintendo at E3 2006? Amazing. 2010? Amazing? 2014? Amazing. 2018? Well, we'll see. But I think I know where this is headed.
This. People don't realize this, but a big part of why Nintendo failed at E3 08 was because E3 in general was off that year. It was scaled back and focused more on gaming as a business rather than gaming as a medium. That's a big reason why Nintendo had a bad showing, there just wasn't much interest in E3 at the time. This is evident the very next year, when Nintendo presented a boring, but much bigger and more balanced presentation in 2009 when E3 reverted back to its original format.
Geez get off nintendos nut will ya? Great company, yeah but fallible? Yes, especially during the end of the Wii and the whole Wii u Era. This era was the company at its worst, tonedeaf, only marketing to young kids and non gamers and alienating the fanbase that fueled them during the SNES and N64 days, no wonder we all turned to the Ps2/3 and Xbox 360s they where the logical conclusion if you grew up on nintendo sadly because nintendo focused thier efforts on kids again instead of trying to cater to kids and keep thier old audiences as well.
Kazoorion I always thought it added enough unique features to differentiate itself from Wild World, though there are a glut of similarities, admittedly
My favorite moment was "I want to show you guys something a little more my speed!" "You're right Reggie, this is more your speed." "Y'know, guys like power stuff."LMAO!
Another quality product by Arlo. Thank you. I still remember watching this conference 10 years ago, filled with hype, I even called up my best friend to watch it with me. When it was over, we were basically destroyed. Weeks of building up hype, smashed. It was this exact moment when I finally stopped being overhyped before E3.
OK though, real talk. I unironically, unsarcastically, actually, truly LOVE Wii Music. I wish they would make a Wii Music 2. I would not be the person I am today without Wii Music. Wii Music has changed my life for the better. Yes, I know the E3 presentation was terrible. Yes, I know Wii Music has some glaring flaws. But if they fix these flaws and add in a bunch of new stuff, I would be really excited for a Wii Music 2. So stop kidding yourselves and cross our fingers for Wii Switch 2 Music 2!
i found wii music pretty amusing for a while it was kind of cool how guitar hero was at its peak of popularity and nintendo said "fug off, we're doing a music game with no challenge" it's kind of a nice toy of a game, and i can see how it could suck people in who had no interest in pressing buttons to make a plumber jump over items, or who just wanted to feel like they were playing an instrument with no idea of how to use one or even how to stay on key while singing or using a simple instrument like a kazoo
This was my last E3 before I graduated College it was so painful my brother slept through it I was thinking about waking him up but I was wait for a big annocment and it never happened.
I’m so glad Nintendo has changed. There’s nothing more disappointing than a lackluster E3, cause you have to wait an entire year for another one! See you at the big show...
Knowing Nintendo, this won't happen because we think it will happen. But now it will happen, because we think it won't. But now that we think it will, it won't. But... I'm done.
Watching bits of the presentation feels like going to a field trip and hearing a long boring presentation that won't matter and is forgetful the next day
Oof, this was a year alright. I think it was actually the first time I was able to watch an E3 conference live online (there weren't TV broadcasts here in Australia) and...well, yeah. I'm so glad we've moved on from this type of presentation (and content haha). Thanks for the hilarious trip down memory lane Arlo! =D

How to call "Core Gamers"? "The Ones that hate everything by default" seems pretty appropiate.
Why would the core games hate everything by default? That doesn't have sense
Can we all agree that 2014's Robot Chicken E3 was one of the best E3 segments ever?
To be fair, I think a lot of people would enjoy a 30 minute presentation on Animal Crossing Switch.
that is true.
All Usernames Taken I think everyone would
No
Generic reply stating that this comment is very accurate because a switch animal crossing direct just happened
👏👏👏 you predicted the animal crossing direct almost 2 years before it released.
One of your best videos hands down, loved it. Keep up the good work.
Man, I don't remember 2008 being that bad because for some reason, I was thinking that this was the E3 that New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Golden Sun: Dark Dawn and Metroid: Other M were revealed.
But yeah, that was pretty bad.
That was E3 2009
Didn't those titles get reveal at 2009?🤔
I thought we all agreed to never talk about this ever again.
OMG HAHAHAHAH ARLOOOOOOO, I ALMOST DIED @ 7:19
The clasic stranger coughing and babby crying bit. (Wipe tear from face) well played my friend... well played 😆
Argo this is one of the best ones you have done yet. Great topic and source material.
I'd love it if Sakurai just threw in the off-tempo Wii Music Mario Theme performance into Smash for Switch.
Keanu Reeves was the first celebrity that wasn't super cringy when they got on stage and started talking about the game.

Sales talk: *exists*
Arlo: all I feel is pain inside
Woops, I meant 2012
You forgot to say there were also dumbing down all their IPs to make them more accesible to their casual audience.
Miyamoto is the reason why people wanna see Nintendo's E3 presentation. He'll come on stage and hold an item from the game they'll announce.
Rebelshifter Nintendo was always Nintendo since the NES you know...
The reason why the Wii was such a poster child of "Nintendo being Nintendo" was because the impact of its revolution (no pun intended) reached out to way more than what they anticipated (even with their blue ocean in mind), which is why, for better or for worse, things got a bit out of hand in the second half of its era, and, to a larger extent, influenced the philosophy of their following home platform.
this video is so perfectly edited. good job!
Honestly as bad as E3 2008 was, E3 2015 was a lot more insulting. At least 2008 didn't see hopes and dreams be turned into cruel punishments.
I sort of want you to do commentary like that on EVERY Nintendo E3 now.
Was the crying baby actually in the conference
Tellotube I wish
We present you... *Wii Motion Plus*
_Baby starts crying_
@@marcossegon5433 LMAO!!
Great video! You and Farfetch'd work really well together!
As a budding musician, I was actually extremely excited for Wii Music when I saw it at E3. I couldn't wait to change up the songs with different instruments and even play the drums for real like they showed, especially since I was a drummer.
(And it didn't disappoint on that front either; in fact, it is literally my most played game on my Wii, with I believe ~180 hours logged.)
They definitely could have presented it better, but even today, they nailed the presentation of the Labo (another thing aimed more at kids but could be enjoyed by anyone who was willing to be creative), and there were still many gamers who rolled their eyes and laughed at it.
God I still remember, The only thing that made me happy was City Folk.
1234 Switch! Hype :D
10:28 don't forget the Scott the Wozs. They are a very small species but they are very much known and love that stuff. Such a majestic creature
Oh man this is some awesome content! Your editing and commenting makes this video so so entertaining! :)
You can hear a baby crying when Reggie says “Wii Motion Plus” and waits for applause.
Pretty sure Arlo edited that in. Thought it was real for a sec though
Yeah, you need to be 18 to go to e3
I'm surprised you didn't slip in a Tommy Wisaeu during that Shaun White laughing segment
Sony isn't even going anymore...e3 has lost it's luster straight up
Geez get off nintendos nut will ya? Great company, yeah but fallible? Yes, especially during the end of the Wii and the whole Wii u Era. This era was the company at its worst, tonedeaf, only marketing to young kids and non gamers and alienating the fanbase that fueled them during the SNES and N64 days, no wonder we all turned to the Ps2/3 and Xbox 360s they where the logical conclusion if you grew up on nintendo sadly because nintendo focused thier efforts on kids again instead of trying to cater to kids and keep thier old audiences as well.
Farfetch'd Reviews is honestly one of the wittiest and best editors you've had.
An arlo video with only 17 views?
*makes butternut squash joke*
1:54 Iwata looked like such a badass the way he revealed the Wii .
E3 2008 brought us Animal Crossing: City Folk, so I can’t hate it entirely. Yet… that drumming…
Meh... that game was basicly just a port of Wild World which was very lame.
Kazoorion I always thought it added enough unique features to differentiate itself from Wild World, though there are a glut of similarities, admittedly
3:09 Keanu Reeves watched your review of this and then proceeded to join up with Cyberpunk and broke the cycle of bad celebrity guest influencers.
This is the reason Nintendo doesn't do conferences anymore lol. Long live Directs!
7:19 “It’s called Wii MotionPlus.”
*crying baby and coughing in the background*
“WII MOTIONPLUS.”
Arlo loves basketball confirmed. This is amazing
My favorite moment was "I want to show you guys something a little more my speed!" "You're right Reggie, this is more your speed." "Y'know, guys like power stuff."LMAO!
No please I dont wanna relive this
Oh hey, someone else knows about Supersonic Rocketship!
2008 sure had a lot of crazy stuff, now is 10 years later, I wonder how it will go this time.
This is the edgy-est Arlo video I've seen
You know “edgiest” is a word right?
Great video man! Never thought somebody would make a video on this in 2018...
Ok but like, animal crossing switch better be at e3
So stop kidding yourselves and cross our fingers for Wii Switch 2 Music 2!
i think your being serius but the idea of wii music chaging someones life is laughable
I had a lot of fun playing Wii Music with my brother at the time.
i found wii music pretty amusing for a while
it was kind of cool how guitar hero was at its peak of popularity and nintendo said "fug off, we're doing a music game with no challenge"
it's kind of a nice toy of a game, and i can see how it could suck people in who had no interest in pressing buttons to make a plumber jump over items, or who just wanted to feel like they were playing an instrument with no idea of how to use one or even how to stay on key while singing or using a simple instrument like a kazoo
if they put Xenoblade tracks in a Switch Music i would buy it day one
I really wish Arlo did some more retrospectives like this.
2008: Animal Crossing!?!? that games for house wifes, nintendo sucks.
2018: Nintendo wheres animal crossing??
Love how this video was in my suggested videos but not in my subscription tab.
This was my last E3 before I graduated College it was so painful my brother slept through it I was thinking about waking him up but I was wait for a big annocment and it never happened.
Always nice to come from from a long day and watch some Arlo
and E3 2018 happened. :/
I'm starting to assume years that end with 8 are cursed for Nintendo.
At least 2019 was 100x better
These help when I’m depressed about how I’m terrible at everything I try. Thank you Arlo.
1-2-3-4 Switch... water came out the nose...
> Looks to the title of the video.
But Arlo I'm not ready for campfire scary stories yet.
This is seriously your funniest video
That drum playing is a profound milestone in experimental music
I low key loved Wii Music.
Nintentohtori blinded by nostalgia
What? I had blast playing it when it came out. I knew it was pretty basic, bit unresponsive rhythm game.
this almost sounds like a pun
Nintentohtori same
+*insert name here*
*Loved*
Not *Love*
I love awkward moments at e3, it might be cringey but you can tell passion was put into the presentation, i love the gaming community
I’m so glad Nintendo has changed. There’s nothing more disappointing than a lackluster E3, cause you have to wait an entire year for another one! See you at the big show...
Peter Haywood Nintendo has got a lot to go with this year. I'm excited! I like the way they can surprise
Thank you Arlo for taking us down this beautifully hellish memory road.
Watch Nintendo reveals 3 4 Switch and is the only thing they talk about the whole E3. You jinxed it ARLO lol :)
ItzAnthony knowing Nintendo, this is possible.
alfasilverblade lol XD
Knowing Nintendo, this won't happen because we think it will happen. But now it will happen, because we think it won't. But now that we think it will, it won't. But... I'm done.
At least they would reveal animal crossing too and honestly that would make me extremely happy
Electric Gaming yup just like ARLO says. When you think you got Nintendo down, they'll do something wayyyy different! XD
That "performance" of the Super Mario Bros theme reminds me of when my sister and I would play wii music and be bad on purpose for the lols
My boy Farfetch'd with the nice edits.
Kyler Ramos ❤❤❤
8:35 "We're a real company, guys. We swear."
7:19 That baby though.
Arlo, you are my most favorite little blue monster ever. Cookie Monster doesn’t even compare. You the best!
"Does not have the best stage presence" - zooms into her chest ...
Yup I totally agree
Not really
No revealing clothing or anything
It was more on her as a person
You into MILF’s?
Egg of Reason put that egg in my mouth boi.
No, it’s meh at best.
Hey come on this is a good family channel
My boy Farfetched represent! Fantastic editing as always!
3:30 Hey look! It’s Tommy Wiseau!
Watching bits of the presentation feels like going to a field trip and hearing a long boring presentation that won't matter and is forgetful the next day
That footage was the worst and the best thing at the same time I have ever seen.
7:48 Wait so... *Paper Mario Colour Splash!* I knew it!
I think E3s are just a place where video game studios and companies came to compete in a friendly game called *"Who can be the cringiest and get to be talked about on the internet and possibly be turned into a short lived meme"*
