Scoprite in questo video come coniugare al presente e usare correttamente i verbi “sapere” e “potere” seguiti da un verbo all’infinito.
Sapere: (io) so, (tu) sai, (lui/lei/Lei) sa, (noi) sappiamo, (voi) sapete, (loro) sanno.
Potere: (io) posso, (tu) puoi, (lui/lei/Lei) può, (noi) possiamo, (voi) potete, (loro) possono.
- Usiamo “sapere + infinito” per indicare la capacità/abilità di fare qualcosa (es. “so suonare il violino” significa che ho la capacità di suonare il violino perché, per esempio, ho studiato).
- Usiamo “potere + infinito” per indicare la possibilità di fare qualcosa (es. “non posso andare alla festa” significa che non ho la possibilità di andare alla festa perché, per esempio, devo studiare).
Imparate insieme a noi come usare questi verbi che, in inglese, si traducono tutti e due con “can”.
Ricordate che, tranne in alcuni casi, non usiamo il pronome insieme al verbo (diciamo “posso”, non “io posso”).
Potete usare i nostri video anche per imparare nuove parole. Scrivete le parole che incontrate di volta in volta e il vostro lessico diventerà sempre più ricco!
Learn how to conjugate in the present tense and correctly use the verbs “sapere” and “potere” followed by an infinitive.
Sapere: (io) so, (tu) sai, (lui/lei/Lei) sa, (noi) sappiamo, (voi) sapete, (loro) sanno.
Potere: (io) posso, (tu) puoi, (lui/lei/Lei) può, (noi) possiamo, (voi) potete, (loro) possono.
In English, both “sapere” and “potere” followed by an infinitive are translated as “can” but:
- “Sapere+ infinitive” refers to the ability (e.g. “so suonare il violino” = “I can play the violin” means that I know how to play the violin because, for example, I have studied it).
- “Potere + infinito” refers to the possibility (e.g. “non posso andare alla festa” = “I can’t go to the party” means that it is not possible to go to the party because I have to study, for example).
Remember that, except in some cases, in Italian we don’t use the pronoun as every subject has a different ending (we say “posso” not “io posso”)

I think most probably think of Sapere as "to know", so it is easier to think of it as "to know how" when used in the context of ability to do something. That way the difference between sapere and potere works itself out easily. "He does not know how to write" versus "He can't write." To answer your final question... Non so parlare l'italiano molto bene!
Yes, also it's easier to distinguish if we remember that " Potere" is also used in terms of asking permission, like an English word: "may" which we often replace with "can". For example: Scuzi, posso telefonare? Exuce me may I call

Martha in Spanish is easier because "Sapere" will be "Saber" (to know) and "Potere" will be "poder" (can), therefore for us Spanish speaker to be able to use those two verbs is easier, cause it doesn't create a confusing scenario.
However in Spanish you can say " (yo) se cocinar" or "(yo) puedo cocinar and both sentences will be fine, one meaning "I know how to cook" and the other meaning "I can cook".
Steve Naranjo Barboza yes as someone who learnt Spanish before I was a bit confused not between these two words, but between saber and conocer at the beginning. However the knowledge makes Italian easy to follow now.
