At first, yes. But the birds actually learn pretty quickly that the are unable to fly through the window. It’s usually migrating birds who aren’t used to buildings with glass that end up flying into glass, not regular birds that live in an area around houses year round

Just a FYI, rotate the food you put in the feeder. So, one week seed, next week fruit, etc. This helps to see different birds and also means the same birds aren't relying on you to feed them. Getting birds reliant on you to feed them can have negative consequences down the line

My sliding glass doors had vertical blinds on them which I kept closed when I was at work. They were perfect for my cats to hide behind and watch the birds. They couldn't get the birds because the doors were closed, but they had fun all day. The birds got free food to get through the winter but only if they were gutsy enough to resist my cats movements.

This is definitely right up my alley lol kudos. The way I do it is peanuts on my air conditioner. Draws in blue jays like crazy, and they stomp on the metal casing of the big old AC unit making a bunch of noise, which gets the cats excited. Plus, the little cracks around the opening makes the bird's calls way louder for the cats. They get pretty stoked. I made hiding blinds for the cats right above the AC unit in front of the window, so the birds can't see them until they burst out of cover.

To make this better I just bought one of these and brought a one way sticker for the window and covered the rest of it. It allows the birds to feel safer and you can still see inside. 😊

Reminds me of the time back in middle school when I was walking home and the owners of an ill-tempered German Sheppard left the gates open and the dog off its leash. Went right for my ankle even though I was on the other side of the street! Glad that I was carrying pepper spray since it wasn't a great neighborhood. Also glad we moved far away from there.

A suggestion to improve bird confidence would be to add a very thin light haze layer (some quality cling wrap will usually do the trick) on the interior side of the window so it's easier for the birds to see that there's glass between them and the cats.

There’s nothing more rewarding than feeding the wild birds. I live on a farm in Devon in the UK and we’ve counted 22 different varieties of bird that visit our feeders throughout the year. Watching the mama birds bring their babies in the spring and summer for food is the most precious thing in the world and worth every penny spent!

    • @SimontheSiameseCat

I bought a windows feeder for my mother in law for Christmas last year, the back panel being a mirror where you could see the birds but they can't see you. She loves the feeder but I'm pretty sure her cat loves it more because she can sit and stare at the birds for hours like it's her own personal television without them getting scared off.

    • @josee-annejoly6896

Squirrels constantly get in mine, it sucks, but since it's an open tray, they don't destroy it to get to the seeds, and the suction cups are really holding up. The only downside is that sometimes the squirrels will sit in the feeder for like an hour stuffing their face and emptying it, meanwhile all the birds just stand nearby and can't use it. But hey... Squirrels get into bird feeders no matter what you do so 🤷
