Franz Rhythm And The Joy Of Family Singing RUclips has gotten really big over the years that it feels most of the time like wading in an ocean full of trash and not finding anything of note. But every now and then a recommendation will come into your feed that’s worth exploring and ending up finding a real gem. Such is the case with Franz Rhythm, a family band headed by the father playing the acoustic, electric, and bass guitars and also doing the lead vocal chores. He is backed by his 2 daughters who plays guitars, keyboards and drums and who are also very good singers. The youngest son sometimes joins in as the drummer. They live what seems to be a humble provincial life in a little town in Bohol, Philippines. Through their vlogs I was able to have a little glimpse on their daily lives, from walking miles to fetch drinking water, to hiking up to the top of a hill to get an internet connection, to the almost yearly bout with typhoons. As I watch these snippets of country life I could not help but be nostalgic and remember the same hardships that we have to endure growing up in Masbate, Philippines. But their struggles I believe is what makes this family band special. Their interpretations of popular ballads and OPM classics from decades ago carry a certain grit and character that can only come from a real world experience. The 2 daughters who I think are just in their teens sing with a level of maturity that can only be found in seasoned professional singers. And because their covers are minimally backed by instruments (mostly acoustic guitars), the lyrics are sang with surprising clarity and the quality of their singing are really brought to the forefront. Sometimes their Visayan accents will creep in (they’re Visayans after all) and only adds to their charm as performers. But most all, they sing as family with a genuine joy; nothing contrived, nothing forced, and not ashamed but rather proud of who they are and where they live. Individually they are all gifted musicians. The father who is obviously the leader of the band seems to have a good grasp of a wide genre of music but more comfortable with folk rock as evidenced by his own compositions. The middle daughter can easily handle pop songs and can certainly belt if needs be. The oldest daughter has a powerful melodic voice reminiscent of Lolita Carbon and Sampaguita. But when they harmonize is when the greater magic happens. Their voices blend beautifully that it can soothe even the most burdened soul. Their folk rock ballads are delivered with certain softness and ache that can pierce the heart with its sincerity. In a sea of mediocrity, rudeness, ugliness, and negativity, the Franz Rhythm Band is a ray of hope. I’m glad I was able to have a little glimpse of what I’m sure will be a bigger star in the future.
