Correction: This IS one of the most brilliant vampire movies. Some critics even dare to say it's the best of all vampire movies that've ever been made.
The vampire genera audience is a tough crowd to satisfy. No critic can make the call you give them credit for. Critics are a useless bunch when it comes to horror an sci fi//fantasy. They'll call a high grossing film of this kind a badly written piece of schlap. While the productions talents laugh all the way to the bank. Horror and sci fi fans dont care a bout art ...all we want is to be entertained by our fav production studios.
Well, I think Gary and Francis came to an agreement about that scene that worked really well. Gary in the bat suit scared the crap out of me when I saw it as a kid.
thats why most movies suck now a days theirs not enough smart artistic actors that challenge the scene and collaborate to create something memorable. that scene when Oldman is the bat is Awesome!! one of the best scenes that almost wasn't there, its cool he fought for something more for that scene and they ended up with that.
Haha! That kid deserves an Emmy for his mother trying to kindly persuade him,"There's nothing to be afraid of, it's just the 'Bloofer Lady' come to take you away!" If that was me as a kid, I know I wouldn't sleep for weeks!
That poor child was traumatized. Little did people know back then how early a child can start remembering things which means that the event alone could also have an impact on them later in life.
oh bull shit.....sure they do.....the horror genera as well as the the super hero movie genera are both alive and well. They cant make great ones like this every time a script is written or we we have nothing to compare it to.
I heard what there are some people didn't like the movie for certain reasons. Screw them. This movie is a true masterpiece. The cast is great, it has everything that needs and suppose to be in a vampire movie and it totally deserved the oscars and other prizes they've won. I'm even a fan of the classic Dracula movie with Bela Lugosi. Christopher Lee's good too. And, of course, I loved Richard Roxburgh's portrayal in Van Helsing.
As a kid I used to have nightmares every time this movie was on tv. I remember I didn't even watch my favourite programms cause I was afraid that the advert of the movie will pop out. Now at 35 I love the movie. And I am in love with Gary Oldman.
I just wish they had let Tom Waits do some talking too. He was a minor character, but I would've loved to hear his opinion, because his character was just so _fascinating_ to observe in his scenes.
Wow... I always found this grave-scene with Sadie Frost the most intriguing one in the whole picture...I always sensed the kid was really scared regarding her body language... thats not acting (LOL).. It is really one of my all time favorite movies...I dont know why people always bash on Keanu..he played it well... but yeah he could not have replaced Gary Oldman...
Coppola has such great vision for what he wants in a movie that's based on a novel. That's what makes a movie director amazing. I also loved how he tried to calm the kid and played a little with her.
She clearly was ok. She eventually calmed down when the actress was holding her when the were shooting the scene. And even after when she dropped her into her mother's arms & she started smiling.
I've seen Gary Oldman in lots of stuff - loved him as Sirius Black, brilliant as Churchill, but not in any have I found him to be sexy like he is in this. Winona is stunning too. Never mind, Keanu, you have Neo under your belt. This is undoubtedly the best vampire movie that could ever be made and it will never be defeated.
It’s interesting because Anthony Hopkins used to be Gary Oldman, and had only recently mellowed out… Gary Oldman has since become mellowed out Anthony Hopkins and Keanu has always been mellow.
Dont you think Twilight should be measured with different medium ? After all Twilight was written for a much younger and I think more girlish audience.
Twilight is a steaming bowl of shit next to this Masterpiece of Cinema. Dracula is the measure in which all vampire stories are judged. And Twilight, and the novels that the movies are based from doesn't even come close....
I RENOUNCE GOD! I RENOUNCE HIM! I shall rise from my own death, to avenge hers with all the powers of darkness". This is the greatest "display" of LOVE I have ever heard. A MASTERPIECE.
@JeanVe I think you missed something... They were trying to calm the kid down, they were trying to show him or her not to be afraid, it was just make-up. When you film with small children, there is always a social worker on set to make sure you are not causing any mental or physical harm.
Coppola brings the best out of these guys, they compliment each other, he is ace director and they are ace actors. Beauty . No wonder God father is #1 or #2 of all movies, of all generations, of all languages. Too much detail , rich extragavent costumes. This dracul is the best most creative potrayal of vampires. Scary too, without much gore and mindless blood scenes and sounds. Pleasant music complements the non scary scenes. Just the trailer can be watched a dozen times. Quotes were great too, like the Count says 'i have crossed oceans of time to meet you '. Van Helsing behavior and way of talking , pronunciation of words is comical and done in true style and finesse.
While Gary Oldman is the best emotional and powerful version of Dracula, but no one, NO ONE can touch Max Schreck. Max’s appearance alone is enough to fuel a million nightmares.
The only movie I ever bought on disc, for the bonus scenes. One of my all time favorites. The bat makeup was brilliant, and the way he turned into rats. If I met Coppola, I'd ask him, "how did you contain the rats once they ran from the room"? Just having one left behind if pregnant would have infested the studio. I'm 69, so I've seen many movies in my lifetime and am very hard to please. This one did it for me. BTW, this is just before cgi, which makes it that much more impressive.
love your comment. Im 43, i was a junior in high school, a gen X Goth, i lived so far out in the mountains.. talk about love, that little theater was the first time getting laid after it as playing for a few months. what a magical time now gone :(
Yes, the production was done painstakingly but the end result is one of my favorite movies in any genre. The bonus stuff on the dvd is great. All the antiquated filmmaking techniques-absolutely fascinating. Coppola is without a doubt a true auteur.
Mostly, kids in horror movies don't really realize what kind of film they're acting in. They just act in some scenes and then can go and play. Actually, the actors etc. try to make it as funny for the kid as it can be. Also, there are many films/scenes with children that are darker than this. And also, sometimes real life is more terrible than any film scene that has ever been made. The kid will witness much more terrible things than acting in this one scene.
@@eliask8558 I could never understand why they had to use that scene with the child.the movie was fantastic. Upset me a bit with the child. She was scared not right.
wow....that kid was terrified...how traumatizing.....its always great to see how the kids really act behind the scenes! But it works well for the film! I like how happy she is when its done and everyone starts clapping for her....typical kid! LOL
I love the miusic in this documentary but its not all from the score :( so have no idea if its the composers work or not (and I am sure it does not say on the DVD) if anyone has any idea's of how I can get hold of it please let me know :)
@Stephen Pike ... You are entitled to your opinion. Spare us all your hate for the film please!! Gary Oldman did respect Coppola, as he himself mentioned in this segment. He understood what an awesome director he is, and thought it was good that they didn't see eye to eye on everything .. So you didn't like the movie, good for you. There are plenty of us that loved it!! So take your hate somewhere else like a good troll!!
Eddie Leal it was more an assertion than anything. of course there was one. just imagine the potential for a sweet lawsuit that there is in that situation.
If you haven't had kids yet, it is easy to gloss over this scene, watch it from the point of view of the adults. "Oh for crying out loud the child actor is being so difficult, get on with it!" As a young fan of this film, I certainly used to watch this behind-the-scenes footage that way. ...But now I'm older, and recently had a baby girl. And now, I watch this same footage and I cannot even begin to comprehend the mindset of a mother who would put her own little baby girl through this, if the child is clearly upset by it, as this one obviously is. Or the filmmakers who would allow it. This is impossible to explain to anyone who has not had children yet. But once you do, it changes you. Your little child becomes the most precious thing in the world to you, and you feel so protective of it. You can't stand to see it cry, even over something trivial. So, how the mother of the child actor can stand by and let this happen strikes me as nothing less than sociopathic. I'm also amazed Coppola, a family man with a daughter, wouldn't sympathize with the child and put a stop to it. ...I still love this movie, and I understand there are big concerns like schedule, budget, etc... but even so... It's very difficult for an older, wiser me to watch this clip without thinking, "shame on all of them".
Many things that are now "vampire clichés" have been first mentioned in Bram Stoker's 19th century horror novel "Dracula". And who actually says vampires may not sparkle in the sun ;) when you write a vampire story, there are no rules. Everyone can invent his/her own kind of vampire. Why? Because vampires don't exist, so one can't say "Vampires don't do this and that", "Vampires have to look like this and that",...

So many profound statements about love that hit home and my heart. Francis and Oldham captured on film what Stoker wrote: a gothic romance!
Coppola made up the romance bit, in the novel Dracula and Mina's scene together is not at all romantic
