The most annoying thing British people (or any non American really) is when they generalize us based on what they've seen in movies/tv and (this is especially annoying) act like they're better because they don't act that way.
In reality America is a significantly bigger country. We have all different types of people and are rather hard to generalize. For every dumb American you find annoying or are laughing at, there is another person who acts completely different.

My weirdest experience in Britain was being told I speak “excellent English for a Russian”. Not wanting to be rude, I said “thank you”.
He asked where in Russia I was from. I told him Dallas.
He replied “I had no idea there’s a Dallas in Russia.”
I said “I don’t think there is. I’m from Dallas, Texas.”
Without missing a beat, he said “Well, you speak wonderful English for an American.”

Having a dry sense of humor is different than being intentionally ignorant, hurtful and insulting. Maybe you don’t know the difference, isn’t a good excuse as everyone has been commenting about this on every single one of their RUclips vids. It has been explained yet they remain US trolls. Shameful ignorance with a lack of compassion. Yes, this behavior does make you two closet tubers look like complete assholes.
For the love of God/Queen and country, try working on the Brexit mess you created before making inaccurately harsh and unfounded criticism about an entire country of people electing their representatives and voting on issues that affect everyone. Are there some uninformed voters, for sure, yet we don’t tend to fuck shit up like that. That has been like taking the vote to school children then making policy fit their wishes. Why, because they are not informed educated citizens of age (anyone with access to our invented interwebs is capable of learning fact from fiction). Perhaps key word search, how will my vote affect my country as well as allied/dependency countries, before you go to the polls. Yep, America considers such possibilities too (what are the possible outcomes of my vote to the country and the rest of the world). We vote on political issues, not popularity people. Do we want a smaller government so the people have more control of their lives or do we want a larger government to regulate controls for possible or real social injustice. This waxes and wanes from cycle to cycle (what makes it work, the art of compromise). Our avoiding an entire nation of people living on the ‘dole’ is that we do not want to be dictated to about private matters. We don’t want to suckle at the tit of America for the rest of our lives. Self reliance, self determination, self evident, self help are more satisfactory than expecting you’re owed something for being alive.

Tipping isn't a culture thing. It's because servers get paid a few dollars an hour and depend on tips to make up the difference in their paychecks. For instance, a server makes around $2.13 an hour. Whereas a person who doesn't work for tips, such as Mc Donalds makes a minimum wage of around $8 an hour. However, this is changing in December 2018.

    • @mikhailv67tv

I thought servers got minimum at least , wow. Our minimum is around $24 per hour it's illegal to pay less. I was thinking you tipped them CAUSE they only got the minimum wage.

No I think it is a cultural thing Americans seem to think that everything that involves social fairness like; minimum wage that are a living wage, universal healthcare and the like are some kind of socialist agenda which will led to godlessness. Is the food cheaper? Why does the customer have to pay the waiters? Shouldn't the employer? I use to always tip taxi drivers because I felt that their lot was pretty crap, but now they are getting undercut by Ubber it's a lost cause and my wages is half what it was before and can't afford to.

The reason why we tip in America is because the waiters in restaurants make half of the minimum wage and rely on tips (if you didn’t already know that). I think they should get paid well and we shouldn’t have to tip them 🤷‍♀️

    American stereotypes:
Holy heck. Okay the reason why a lot of Americans are so offended or seem to be more offended is because our country is crazy big and there are so many regional differences that a stereotype usually only applies to one part of one region and people apply it to the whole country when two states over its entirely a different situation

For me these are mildly annoying, and I still love Brits, but...
    1) calling someone, "typical American."
    2) England alone has a legion of accents, and dialects, but they will correct your pronunciation every time.
    3) Saying" Americans do not do things properly, i.e., the English way.
    4) British perceptions being highly influenced by film, television, and the internet, but claiming Americans have no clue about other people, cultures, etc.
    5) Brits buying into numerous stereotypes, while insisting that's an American thing.
No disrespect here. As I've said, these are very minor things to me, and I've loads of respect and admiration for the Brits.

I haven’t seen the video yet but I’d say that as an American the most annoying thing for us is generalizing all of us as one culture. I know the UK and tons of countries have regional differences and accents but the USA takes that on a whole other level. We’re just way too big to generalize. Even us Americans tease each other with our state differences. I’m totally fine with generalizing a State. But California, Texas, Florida, New York and more carry far more differences than any 2 places in England. As someone with family now living in England and visiting there multiple times, I can say that’s true. Each State is practically its own country with its own culture, politics, traditions, accents, laws, and more.

    • @joshcompton1693

The original concept was a confederation of independent states much like the Greeks during the times of the Peloponnesian wars or the invasions by persia where they were all separate countries united under culture and foreign policy they would all act independently have their own laws and such even be able to war and put tariffs on each other but if they go to war they all support each other militarily and they can decide as a group to be offensive in war. So basically it would be the countries , otherwise known as states, loosely linked under a central government which decides foreign policy and has no say on the domestic laws in any particular state. Well that was shot down by the federalists who wanted a strong central government eventually they decided they needed a strong centralized government but allowed states to make their own laws. After they decided that there came a conflict between whether or not the laws of the strong central government would outweigh the states laws as the United states is such a big country and the regions so different ,as you said, states know what is best for their state and blanket laws by a federal government cant effectively govern the multiculturalism of the United States. We fought a civil war over this concept but then liberals made it about slavery so most people dont know thats why the civil war was actually fought and thats why there will be another civil war but thats beside my point. What is my point is you are right we are all so different we need a different type of government than other people in order to keep us together due to how different we are from each other. You cant generalize Americans. Other countries yea but not Americans

The US is less a country and more an empire, with what essentially counts as countries as its states (and at least two of them, Texas and Hawaii, WERE countries prior to becoming states!). It's as silly as saying Englishmen are the same as Scots, or the same as Welsh or Northern Irish folks.

It's not that Americans don't understand Sarcasm, it's that Brits tend to use it ALL THE FREAKING TIME that it is hard for Americans sometimes to have a normal conversation with a Brit. It's like "OK!!! Enough Already! We get it, your weather sucks! You don't expect anything good to EVER happen to you!! Can we talk about something else without you spitting negativity at me?!" I once made the mistake of trying to make small talk with a team in Britain during a conference call while we waited for something. I asked them how the weather was and if they had plans for the weekend. What I got in response was 15 minutes of Sarcasm about the terrible weather, a string of American stereotyping remarks concluding with "probably head to the pub, or as you people might say 'a BARRRR' ". Couldn't hang up fast enough.

What drives Americans crazy (why many get “triggered”), which you understand and it’s not necessarily Brits, but just the world in general. It’s when people complain about things that Americans do or say, etc. when they are the same way. It’s like we’re easy scape goat. People everywhere are basically the same at their core. There’s stupid people, nice people, evil people, ignorant people, racism, sexism, poverty, wealth, etc. everywhere. People from every country thinks theirs is the best. I feel we’re an easy target cuz there’s so many of us and we’re constantly in the spotlight. The hypocrisy is what gets so many triggered as it would anywhere else.

Well here in Britain we just pay our waiters and waitresses enough to survive meaning we don’t need to tip them but personally I will tip at a restaurant (not in a cafe etc. because in some places it can be seen as rude) if the service has been worthy of it

if the service sucks, then no tip. If short on cash, then more than likely no tip. Tips are fully voluntary. Mandatory ones are only legal in the form of Service Charges which are paid to the restaurant and not given to an individual.

ohifonlyx33 If someone prefers not to tip I think it's reasonable to order to-go and take the food elsewhere to eat. Then you don't have to pay for service. Bonus... The server will not take your empty plate too soon. ;) The price of food is lower because It is left up to you to determine how much your server has earned. If they were bad at their job then not tipping is totally appropriate. They won't like it, but it certainly will become a motivator if they are seeing a pattern.
We may not agree with the method, truthfully I think it would be nice to see tax included. Then again if I live an area with a lower tax rate I suppose I would be upset about an increase in prices. Good or bad, we are stuck with it for the time.

Americans do get sarcasm...but I read a quote somewhere that got it right: we DO know what it means-we just fear hurting people with an ill-timed comment.
I would also make the point that having different opinions does not make people stupid either. Take Trump voters, for example: people voted for him for a variety of reasons. And some people did have legitimate reasons to do so. But you HAVE to remember we have a different cultural background and different foundational laws. Assuming people are stupid, bigoted, and so in, simply because you personally may not understand or care for them, is EASILY the worst way to make me angry, whether it is a person from elsewhere doing it, or a fellow American.

The very biggest irritation to me as an American, the SINGLE BIGGEST PET PEEVE, is when foreigners think they understand our government, politics, and culture simply because we are a very publicized country- when in fact, they typically don’t know what they are talking about. I get that others are interested, and I totally understand because we are a very globally involved country- and it’s flattering that everyone cares. But when it gets to the point that the average person is comfortable talking about us, we get a lot of accidentally rude remarks that can be a little off putting.
    EXAMPLES:
I hate that they criticize our government constantly, rather than recognize how it is extremely strong- allowing for change in times of crisis, or with the passage of time, and shifting opinions simply because the people will it. At least we have a Government that tries its best to cater to what every person wants- which is more than many other places can say.
I hate it when people point out our flaws without realizing the extent of their hypocrisy. Picking on us for our social issues, or parts off our society they don’t understand- especially when just about every single nation in the world, especially the major powers, has done.
Pardon America for making a few mistakes here and there in our long 240 years of existence,
I guess we’ll just completely disregard all the other nations that have been around for THOUSANDS OF YEARS and have a much longer history of screw ups and still continue to act like dumbasses.
I hate when foreigners pretend to understand the constitution, or criticize our rights and freedoms.
    - like that freedom of speech allows people to be mean. Well boo hoo. Yeah, problems arise as a consequence of people being allowed believe what they want, but that’s how you make a difference in society- greatness doesn’t come without trial and error. Sure mean things are said, bad ideas arise- but at least we can get everything out in the open before we come to a decision. There’s nothing wrong with trying to make sure everyone is happy even if it’s not always possible.
Or the right to bear arms. We have good reason to have it. And it is our rig and freedom of choice to have access to firearms. You can feel happy and safe in your country without it, but I feel just as safe in my country with it- and if someone tried to take us over, they couldn’t.
If you look around the world where there are human rights issues, the right to bear arms could make a huge difference. It’s only because we are an affluent country that it seems so out of place, but we understand its importance.
I hate it when foreigners disrespect our president. I don’t care if it’s an old president, our current president, or a president to be. If you don’t live here, you aren’t a part of the people and culture that elected them. You probably only hear partial news and buy into anything the media feeds you, and you probably don’t understand. ( FYI when you have freedom of press you have to learn to filter through it to the truth.) I respect that even foreigners have opinions, but we can just as easily criticize your form of government if we wanted to, but the average joe here typically doesn’t. So step off a little okay?
I hate it when foreigners generalize Americans, or think we are ignorant. In some ways it’s more funny than aggravating.
    - they don’t understand that each state is its own culture, and is the size of an entire country by itself- with the United States as a whole being about as big as the entirety of Europe and taking up most of a continent. THAT MEANS THERE ARE MANY DIFFERENT TYPES OF AMERICANS.
Texans can be different from Californians who are different than Hawaiians who are different from Alaskans who are different from people in South Carolina who are far different from New Yorkers.
They think we don’t know anything about Europe when they don’t know much better about us.
    - we are not stupid, we are not lazy, and we are not ignorant. I don’t know where the idea came from that Americans are Lazy or stupid came from, but it’s bullshit. It’s probably because the parts of America that are often portrayed in Movies have an easygoing lifestyle. But let me tell you we have it good because we worked our ass of in the right direction. America, brand new baby country, became a bigger industrial power than just about any other country in the world in a matter of years through some hard ass teamwork. We are inventive, intelligent people.
I guess foreigners forget who invented the lightbulb, airplanes, space travel, advanced a lot of modern medicine- including life support, and - oh yeah- THE INTERNET. -- you’re welcome.
I hate it when foreigners mock our patriotism. What’s wrong with having pride in ones country? It is a way that all of our vast states and people to feel connected. We are not just respecting the government we built- every time we look at the flag we solute the hard work and lives laid down that it takes to make sure that flag stands, and thank the people who give us the right to be able to stand tall and sing “I’m Proud to be an American”. It’s respect for our culture and frankly I don’t know why other countries don’t do it as well.
AND I HATE when foreigners take advantage of our ability to laugh at ourselves in order to pick on us. And I hate how when we speak our minds on the internet people think we are mean for stating our opinions or speaking up. We aren’t getting mad at you, we are trying to seriously discuss things, or tell you how we feel. Don’t take offense to everything we say, because we are used to talking with people as equally strong minded as we are and we don’t always mean offense.
    - I am not at all angry or annoyed when I’m writing this, it’s just a list of things i as an American find annoying. But it’s not like I dislike anyone who does it sometimes.
I Hate it when foreigners think we are being self centered by calling our nation America. It’s as if they believe we call ourselves that to say we are the whole damn North American Continent. No.
We call ourselves America because the full name of the country is “ The United States of America.”
It’s mouthful and it’s a lot easier to go by a nickname don’t you think?
In summary: DONT PRETEND YOU GET US IF YOU DONT GET US 😂 obviously Not all foreigners do it, and like I said, it’s all very flattering people are interested and invested in us, but it can be a handful sometimes. It’s like if I started telling you that your country doesn’t make sense and your behaviors are weird.
Of course we are all weird to each other, that’s why it’s foreign.
Shoutout to anyone who actually reads this absurdly large comment. Thanks.

  • @alessandracastillo4458
    @alessandracastillo4458 6 лет назад +17

So great video but to clear up some things. The reason tipping is a big deal in the US is because usually people like waiter/waitresses literally rely on them to survive. For example here in Texas the minimum wage is $7.25/hr however waiters are paid at a lower rate around half that. Last time I checked I think it was around $3.45/hr so they heavily rely on that tip to make a living. It’s not a rudeness thing it’s more of well they won’t make a living otherwise lol.
Trump won the election with the electoral votes not the popular vote. Meaning more people voted for Clinton but due to how our voting system works trump won.
Also last thing about the teeth. So I read somewhere or saw a video somewhere not sure if I’m correct or not but I read British people in the past were very proud of their whole natural look that they didn’t fix their teeth. Therefore meaning the more crooked teeth you had the better the personality because you were naturally like that. Something along those lines. But recently the British have started adopting the West ways and started doing the whole straight, white teeth thing. But obviously you see the teeth from the older generation and the stereotype just sticks lol.

    • @MikeRees
      @MikeRees 6 лет назад

We don't do the whole straight, white thing really. We only really straighten teeth if there is a medical reason to do so (there often is, it must be said) and people who whiten their teeth are still seen as incredibly vain, not to mention a little trigger happy with their wallets

They get more only if tipped. Servers are allowed to be given a base wage less than the federal minimum wage because of tips. In theory, if they get no tips, then they get minimum wage for the hour in question...which still isn't enough to support yourself. This is important for visitors to understand when they visit a restaurant in the US and why servers become massively offended if they do not get a tip/why it is considered extremely bad manners to not give a tip in that situation.

I find it interesting that there are so very many videos on Brits making fun of Americans, hating things Americans do, giving Americans advice of things they shouldn't do, imitating American accents, things that Americans do that drive Brits crazy, and on and on and on! Yet when I googled what Americans are saying about Brits, or how they are comparing themselves to Brits, I found 1 video!! ONE! Does that mean that Americans have better things to do than to compare themselves with other countries? While all these other countries are fixating on Americans and what they do when they travel and how irritating they are, we blithely pedal on talking how we talk, dressing how we dress and not worrying if the neighbors across the pond are getting in a wad about it. Relax! Live and let live. We don't have to take on each others cultures and do everything right when we visit each others countries! Tolerance! Forbearance! A little humility! It's a beautiful thing called friendship. Acceptance. Everyone on both sides should try it. Brits are no better than Americans, just different. Americans are no better than Germans, just different. Germans are no better than Mozambicans, just different. You get the picture.

If my party was particularly difficult or had kids or babies making messes, I tip more. You should never do 10% unless you are very displeased. Remember the reason the bill is lower than you would pay in the UK is because, like it or not they expect the server to get part of their income directly from you. They feel this motivates the server to work harder for you.

Servers in most states make around $2 an hour (much less than minimum wage) so they are literally depending on your tips to make any decent amount of money at their job. No, this should not be legal but it still is and likely will be for many years to come so if you can't afford to tip your waiter then you shouldn't be eating out at the restaurant. 15-20% is considered standard and more is often given for good service, you should literally not go out to eat if you can't afford that

When it comes to tips, it's not so much about being offensive, it's about being stingy. If you tip less than 15% it comes across as out of touch or unconcerned with how abysmally underpaid and overworked waitstaff are. I've worked in the restaurant industry and many people I've worked with go through many mental health crises throughout their work week due to working conditions and rude and entitled customers, so a small tip just feels like adding insult to injury. If you're not used to American customs when it comes to tipping, your safest bet is to at least tip 15% just out of courtesy and respect for your waitstaff's mental well-being.

Well, just as other countries have their customs and cultures, so have we. A lot of us were brought up with the "When in Rome.." philosophy, which is only respectful. Why would we/anyone (this is rhetorical) go to someone else's house & intentionally be rude? It's Their house- not yours; if you don't like it, you are free to leave. The tipping thing. Many servers get paid $2.13 an hour. Two Dollars. And Thirteen Cents. For Every Sixty Minutes of Work. That's insane. And it's Also why gratuities (*IF* they've earned them) are so crucial to their making a living. Other cultures' custom Not to tip, knowing this situation, is just blatantly disrespectful to those who work so hard here. And the norm, if the service was good, is 20%. If you leave less, the servers will feel they did a bad job. If they Did, then go for it. That's their choice to give crap service. There have been a few times where I've left 50, 60%, even... because it was So superlative, So outstanding, that I loved seeing their faces when they received it. But that's me.
    Just
as it is outrageously Rude to be LOUD in public places.. unless your culture embraces loudness/boisterousness like some Latin cultures, some religious cultures.. it's just their nature. (I'm still a fan of using an "indoor voice", as we were taught)-- and I think some Americans just feel so privileged to have all the freedoms we do that they (hopefully unconsciously) flaunt it when they're in other countries. Oh God that's so hard to be lumped in with those that feel that way as a reflection of Americans.
But the thing about the U.S. is we're a lovely melting pot. We have the advantages of many cultures sort of weaving into each other & I think that is so cool. It's Also why we like to go see other countries that basically have Just One culture, so we can be immersed in something completely different than our own. Yeah, all countries are going to be different bc we didn't have the chance to grow up together. We're all doing the best we can.
One thing other countries do say about us is we're annoyingly complimentary. If it's genuine, how is being kind annoying? And if we're fascinated by your accent (which, most of us Dream we had), why is that bad? It's like kids getting together for the first time, appreciating the differences in each other. I think it's pretty wonderful. I love our differences around the world. Just as I love our freedoms we each have to different degrees.
And if most of America hated Trump, we'd be on our way to being a Socialist government, which the majority, as it were, does not want. Our country is at a place where a businessman is exActly what is needed now to clean up the nearly FUBAR'd situation in which we find ourselves. Is he an ass? Yeah- for sure, sometimes. But most of us are tired of being beholden to other countries, and want to stand on our own again. The reason it Seems like "most of America" hates Trump is the perfect example of that obnoxious, loud American we all know & dislike so well (as well as those illegally here) being, well, obnoxious and loud, puffing up their chests to look bigger.
Boy, do we have a lot to learn about each other. But how great is That? Thank God we're all different-- learning and expanding is the reason & product of Life and I for one, cannot Wait--- to see your country & try your customs respectfully on for the duration.
Oh and sarcasm is Fabulous when it's witty, intelligent, dry... but when it's out and out meanness in sarcastic clothing, then it's neither intelligent, nor funny. But come On.. witty sarcastic banter? Is there anything better?

Think they are getting at the price tag says one thing and you pay another. In the UK the tax on goods though generally higher is built into the price on the tag. Visitors I have had from the UK were somewhat confused and it took some getting used to for them to know how much they would be spending. In the US there is often an added cost not reflected on the price. I took it to mean what I have often heard that it can be confusing and difficult for them to get used to, not that they were complaining.
If you ever read what they are fed about American politics and politicians you would probably not recognize who they are talking about. UK coverage of US politics is beyond horrid. Think it is due to a language which can seem familiar yet be so different in meaning and usage. Even still it is often difficult to hear the English talk US politics as they are so oven very ignorant on the matter. Often like listening to the far left or right in this country shrill.

If I had to hang out with a British person... it would only be one. Because I can’t stand snobbyness. Got to bring that nose out of the clouds when you’re around me. Can’t do it. Nope!!!

Lilly Bae ohnreally? All stereotypes are inaccurate in some way and yet you think you’re fair about that?. Hmmm..... maybe try not posting a video of yourselves showing your ignorance regarding stereotypes disguised as a learning tool yet is simply to get your kicks by bashing people who are different than you are, especially the big, bad U S of A. We all have a world of knowledge at our fingertips and this is what satisfies you? Say a silent prayer that more average Americans haven’t found this garbage (several thousands of additional opinions regarding this BS would be devastating and you would feel hated).

I also prefer to hang around with people who don’t generalise an entire country so it’s alright

We, Americans, definitely understand being sarcastic and sardonic; we damn near abuse sarcasm in this country.

American sarcasm is in a different styling than yours, perhaps. For the most part, our sarcasm is used to really take a crude dig at you. In today's pop culture reference we would call that " throwing shade". Unfortunately, the hourly pay for food service workers is very under the poverty line. Business owners expect the customers to tip well, so they don't bother paying their hard working employees much. Is this the opposite scenario over there?I think Americans are just amused by different accents, in general. ...Even from other Americans from different states. I lived the military family lifestyle from a young age until adulthood...i.e. " Army Brat". Everywhere we moved to, whether foreign or state wide, I was asked about or told how different I sounded. Being a black person that's living in an area, state, that doesn't have a fair mixture of culture, I get hit with the stereotypes from people that have not come into contact with a variety of blacks, or none at all but what they've seen on t.v. and assume we are all the same and sound the same as the media presents us to the world. Trust me when I say I understand what you mean when you say that hearing how impressive you sound becomes annoying after awhile. For me, it starts to get insulting and tells me more about them and their ignorance and lazy complacence to just believe the t.v. stereotypes as fact. In the black community we get to a certain age where we discover how truly different we are because we are told so in some rude awakening" loss of innocence" kind of way. That's when black parents have to sit their children down and have "The Talk". We are told how kids and adults may now treat us, how we may be mercilessly teased, taunted and bullied, but to never show your emotions. Do not give them the satisfaction of tears. Make your tears count is a common term which pretty much boils down to no one who treats you bad is going to care about hurting your feelings so wait til you get home or when it will be meaningful around someone who will care about you when you need to break down. A lot of American black kids are taught to stand up for themselves if someone means them physical harm, so that's why kids and adults may see us as mean looking or unapproachable, but it is a safety guard/wall. Speaking for myself, I have always been the type of spirited person to greet people with a smile and warmth. I've learned that you must pick and choose when and where to put up your guard once you have analyzed and assessed the people in your surroundings to be open to. For the most part, I am highly accessible to approach. I try to give people the benefit of the doubt first and adjust accordingly. So I understand your culture being " put off-ish and stand off-ish as well. It's passed down to your from previous generations in your impressionable years. You guys are great. Love your videos, by the way 😊.

blackkatt777 Something else few people talk about is how military families are typically more diverse, more compromising, more accepting, more compassionate because we get to experience different places and people. Walk a mile in our shoes J/L then spout that bullshit about how ‘educated’ you truly are and how we sacrifice nothing to the fellow man to be proud of.

Yea Americans understand sarcasm but I think that Americans are used to hearing sarcasm in an American accent rather than a British accident so when they hear it from a Brit they can’t tell that it’s sarcasm
