To me they are both studies in how we deal with trauma, but different kinds of trauma. Batman is how we deal with trauma from one major event while spidey is about being selfless depiste the many "traumas" of everyday life and compounding major trauma. The feels of their worlds are different sure. I still see them as mirrors of each other kinda.

IDK, it's not really a "this is the same" to me as much as "I could be reading the better one" since the Black Cat personality anoys me more than anything and I don't think a Femme fatal works nearly as well with a joking character like Spiderman than a more stoic presence like Batman.
Specially since unlike Bruce, Peter is always on romantic triangles bullshit which gets really annoying but I will admit that's more a general problem than a Black Cat specific problem. It just hurts her more than others.

The decision that she was only prepping her battlefields rather than having actual luck did lead to interesting character drama with Spidey flipping out that since she's now trying to be a hero the villains are going to be picking the battlefields. But I did sort of like her with the vague luck power. Put her in a team with Longshot, Domino, that one Irish hero chick and some of the other luck heroes as a gag one-off. See if you can get John Jackson Miller to write it, he wrote outrageous swings of luck very well in his Star Wars KotOR comic.

Felicia and Selina are very similar. So much so that I'm surprised DC hasn't sued Marvel. Both, however, could be said to draw from similar source material: the idea of a film noir femme Fatale Cat burglar.
Similarly, both DC and Marvel have supervillains named The Enchantress. But the concept of a seductive femme Fatale who uses her sexuality to manipulate men is one that exists throughout mythology and legends across cultures. Neither DC nor Marvel originated the idea, so neither one owns it and, therefore, they cannot sue over it.

She originally didn't have powers. In her next appearance they revealed that she would go to certain places and set traps, then lead people there and things would go wrong and she'd claim it was her "bad luck powers".
Eventually she and Spidey became a couple but he worried about her getting hurt fighting villains. So she went and got actual bad-luck powers from scientists who turned out to be working for the Kingpin.
She had lost and regained these powers over the years so I don't really know if she still has them now.

Although I can't deny that the characters are very similar, somehow Felicia's personality as an individual seems to shine through all of her writers. I think part of this is how the brightness and fun (dare I say Manic Pixie Dream Girl in 2022?) contrasts with the femme fatale aspect. It is almost as if Catwoman is moving more toward being like Black Cat. The real difference between them could easily have been the fact that Felicia had super powers, but somehow it is deeper than that. She channels a lot of 'crazy ex-girlfiend that you should not like but do' energy, unlike Catwoman who somehow seems more genuinely dangerous. I wonder whether they are the same being in the Amalgam universe.

I think Black Cat's costume looks like it is based after the original Black Cat where the current Catwoman is more based after Miss. Fury. The protagonist being attracted to bad girl(or boy) in hopes to change them or walk the dark side didn't start with Batman and Catwoman but that is a very popular one. Terry and the Pirates I think did it first with the Dragon Lady but she wasn't 'cat' themed which is where I think the main connection people see Catwoman and Black Cat having in common with the purrrfect pussy-cat puns.

The Black Cat/Felicia has been always a mysterious character to me, the first time I read about her she was shot to death. When I was a child and long before I started to collect comics, I used to read every comic that come to my hands, some of them of Siperman's, I don't remember the title of the issue but it was the very first I read with Black Cat/ Felicia in and it was the conclusion of an arc when they face Doctor Octopus, the issue started with them badly injured, Doc Ock's artificial arms splattered but still moving and Black Cat sacrifices herself to save Spiderman from been shot to death, luckily in spite of her wounds Felicia survives. I was like 9 or 10 years old, it was the first time I saw that kind of violence in a Spiderman story and in a comic book - my only reference so far then were some reprints from the Comic Code era and the TV cartoons from the 60's and even though there were some guns and shots, there were no blood. Speaking of cartoons: Now after watched this video I cannot stop imagining how would it bee and appearance of Black Cat on the Spiderwoman's cartoons if she was a villain to Jessica Drew's.
Now let me talk you a story: back then when I was a child, at the 80s, it happened that time - and it happens pretty much the same right now-, that the one Mexican editorial company had acquired both DC and Marvel rights to reprint and translate to Spanish and make some adaptations to the most popular titles of both companies in order to make them more relatable to Latinamerican countries - that's why in Mexico and Latinamerica Batman, Robin, Batgirl, as the main example of it, them kept their superhero name but used to have secret identities in Spanish, being Bruno Díaz, Ricardo Tapia and Bárbara Fierro (that makes her father el Comisionado Fierro) repectively; sometimes the names of some heroes and or support characters were translated too, like Mujer Maravilla for Wonder Woman and we used to pronounce her name Diana as it sounds in Spanish - actually is the same name with the same spelling- and Prince was kept, almost the same case but slightly different is Lois Lane's case who we used to call Luisa Lane (keeping the phonetic sound not so much the correct pronunciation of their last names in English); and one special case is Catwoman's who was given the name Gatúbela instead of Mujer gato. In the case of Marvel characters the translation was not so much of the secret identities but mostly of the name of the heroes: Hombre Araña, Mujer Araña Doctor Pulpo, Duende verde, la Gata Negra; Los Hombres X: Profesor X, Cíclope, Chica Marvel, Bestia, Hombre de hielo, Ángel, Glotón for Wolverine, Tormenta; Los Vengadores: Capitán América, Hombre de Hierro, Viuda Negra, Hombre Hormiga, Bruja Escarlata, la Avispa, Visión; Los Cuatro Fantásticos: Hombre increíble sometimes also known as el Hombre elástico, la Mujer Invisible, la Antorcha humana, and as for the Thing the literal translation "la Cosa" didn't work for them so they decided to call him la Mole (please do not mistake it for the traditional Mexican dish which name is spelled and pronounced the same "mole") which means huge massive object or material.
I am so sorry I've written like an ancient scroll here.

Heh, is so funny, because just doing a little bit of research, Catwoman was nothing Black Cat around this time, not until the 80's and 90's, then really when she was redesigned by Darwyn Cooke. Other than the flirting, you can say Catwoman took cues from Black Cat.
If the 1994 series (which she's the Gwen Stacy standin for the most of the show, and then becomes a ripped super soldier Black Cat) I don't know if she'd be that well known, everywhere, or a J. Scott Campbell CoverGirl icon that she is today.

Specifically, she reminded me of the Julie Newmar version of Catwoman from the old Batman TV series. No wonder Beck has self-esteem issues... not Mysterio, just Beck somehow.

Giving Jessica Drew a bad luck powered nemesis would also make it very hard for her to distinguish that anything put of the ordinary from her normal life when they fought. Also as a die hard Spiderwoman fan I really wish that this had happened because they are perfect foils: OG Spiderwoman attracts men and makes women fear her, making it nearly impossible to have a normal social life based on factors completely out of her control, while Black Cat uses her feminine charm as a matter of choice. They are both solitary but they could absolutely have a jealousy component over each other: black cat because Jess can seduce almost anyone without even trying and Spiderwoman because Selina could live a normal life and chooses not to

Comparing Spiderman's and Batman's relationships with their own cat themed villain is a bit of a weird comparison in my mind because I really can't decide who's actually worse. On one hand Black cat loves Spiderman but doesn't want anything to do with Peter Parker, while on the other Catwoman has always felt a little more dangerous depending on what your reading or watching. Black Cat might fight Spiderman but I don't think she's ever put him into actual death traps like Catwoman has done to Batman but when they are a couple Batman and Catwoman tend to work really well .
So one hates half of who you are while the other used to try and kill you with no remorse.

I didn't read a lot of early Batman comics, but for what little I saw, at the beginning it looked like Catwoman didn't feel that strong of an attraction to Batman but used his infatuation with her as an advantage. That, of course, changed over the years

    • @notaraven
      @notaraven Год назад +1

Fun enough I love spider man and Batman as superheroes but never really confused the 3 cat burglar villains except by name. tbf their names are a descriptor with "cat" stapled on it.
I think its because their personality is distinct enough and motivations strong enough to tell them apart. Black Cat does her villiany for fun and actively chases spiderman for the joy of it. she is the center of attention and only leaves when she is finished.
Catwoman is doing crimes for a purpose, though what that is changes depending on the writer. She is focused on her hits and usually uses every angle to get her prizes. Her interest in batman has always been more convenient, she flirts with him because he decided to show up and stop her. She rarely if ever goes to batman and will only begrudgingly help him.
Basically black cat is down for anything she feels like doing, while catwoman got shit to do.

Betty and Ned both catch a case of what I like to call 'satellite syndrome'. it happens when characters become caricatures (sometimes permanently but not always) to make whomever the focal point of the plot is more interesting. by putting the decision in Peter's hands and punishing him for doing what in this case was the right thing ( instead of having an honest conversation about whether their relationship is worth fixing or not) Peter gets to pull out his sad puppy eyes for a couple panels and now has no reason not to go after Felicia. I can't think of any examples where it leads to anything good for the character that catches it, they either reset to what they were before they caught it, or get fridged.

"Betty and Ned both catch a case of what I like to call 'satellite syndrome'. it happens when characters become caricatures (sometimes permanently but not always) to make whomever the focal point of the plot is more interesting."
You've pretty much described every supporting character throughout Spidey's history. They all act like this, even going back to the Lee/Ditko era.
And don't be too quick to let Peter off the hook here - Betty had just gotten married, left Ned on their honeymoon, came back to New York, went to see Peter, and they slept together. So Peter had an affair with a married woman.

Peter and Felicia are one my favorite couples in comics (yes I kinda prefer her for Peter over MJ) but I do KIND OF think she is just a diet coke equivalent of Selina Kyle
But kind of a side note about Peter and Felicia's relationship, I don't think any writer as ever fully committed to it, it just feels like when ever a writer has them date they always have the intention to eventually break them up, when they can and have been a really good couple, Peter shows her how to be a better person and Felicia shows him how he shouldn't take on too much stress and should have more fun.
    P. S does anyone else find it annoying that in any continuity Peter always ends up with MJ even if he has a better chemistry with another character ?

    • @jhornacek
      @jhornacek 2 года назад +4

There is no "Peter and Felicia" couple. Felicia *only* loves Spider-Man. When Spidey revealed his secret identity to her and she realized he wasn't a billionaire living in a mansion and was instead a poor photographer in a shabby apartment, she told him to put his mask back on.
Peter realized that his relationship with Felicia had no longterm potential because she only loved Spidey, not Peter. Where as MJ loves both Peter and Spidey, which is why she had better chemistry with him than any other love interest.

Black Cat has always felt kind of like Marvel's version of Catwoman. But she DOES have her own personality and quirks. They revealed back in the day that all of those "bad luck" powers were elaborate traps she had set up to make people THINK she had powers so they would be leery of messing with her. Eventually, the Kingpin "gave" her real powers. At the time of this recording, they may have retconned it to where she always had powers. But her preparedness back in the old days made her seem like a more formidable force. Someone that puts that much work into their job is almost more of a Batman than a Catwoman. She's always checking out the scene and seeing what she might run into.
Honestly, I've enjoyed her last couple of series. I wish Marvel would stop doing the "stop/start" thing and just let it play out. But....That's modern Marvel for you.

Catwoman has a great personality but the reason it shines is because Batman is often one-dimensional, compared to Peter.
