ALWAYS make sure Sparky and Fido are clear of the launch area before taking off. 😂 Seriously though, this episode is jammed packed with good lessons. If you enjoyed it, be sure to share it with your friends. Also, if you have any videos that you would like me to feature in the future, leave them down below!
I am a little confused what you mean by actively piloting? You said you would "start actively piloting" in a turbulent situation. In my mind, you are AP'ing from the second you take off until you land. Does the term AP have a very specific meaning?
@@Robin-sc1lf This is just a term for when you have your hands on the breaks and are making constant active corrections to stabilize your flight. In smooth air you'll fly pretty straight and can stow the breaks maybe making minor weight shift adjustments; in more turbulent air you can get pitched around a lot maybe start an osculation or change directions unexpectedly. Actively monitoring and correcting for these deviations is active piloting.
This was a great one. Lots of learning to be had here!
That dog was insane!! He was way up there! Caught the guy's foot in a leap, too! HAHAHA!
@@SmittySmithsonite I just wonder if the guy sustained any damage to his foot.
Hey @@ryan.hanthorn , Thanks you for explaining that so well. I have a clear understanding now. I knew it must imply something specific.
Tucker: "We are not here to laugh at these pilots and their mistakes"
Also Tucker: "I don't know if that makes a bad person laughing hysterically when I watched it the first time" 😂😂😂

I agree with the lesson angle but some of these it's like how can you not laugh a little

Wow, that dog was lucky it didn't break any bones. Keep up the great videos!
Lucky he didn’t jump into the blades 😬
Totally owners fault for not having their dog on a leash I would have given them a tongue lashing if I was on the ground and saw that. Not to mention probably call the cops as the dog did bite someone, and obviously not easy for the paramotor to come right back.
That dog is lucky he didn’t end up dead bc if that happens to me I would of beat it to death
@@TheSideLineLinemen Honestly i’d do the same.
Wish the dog held on a bit longer to feed the sharks. Dogs like that should be shot.

Brad the Hero: “Grab your wing dude”
Dudeman: Ignores multiple orders to grab wing. And instead immediately takes off helmet.
WTF?! The helmet should be the last thing you take off when chaos strikes.
He must have been new to flying. I mean I've never done this and only had some basic parachute training as I use to fly with my grandfather in his piper but even I knew he should have been pulling the cords to collapse his chute.
Panic and shock can do weird things with you.
easy to say that when you haven't just been dragged 75 feet

@1234 what is your problem?
I've been watching you fly for a while. I am so impressed with the knowledge you have with, seemingly every aspect of flying. You are so professional with your presentation. Please be safe!!
Excellent effort! You’re videos make me happier every day. And are very educational.
As soon as I saw those ski tips getting close to the water I had a feeling that we were about to see exactly what we saw. His calm response probably saved his life. Freezing cold water is no joke on its own, let alone when hooked up to an anchor that you're wearing on your back.
Haha video 3 is my favorite, at 5:27 the “woo-hoo” like would normally proceed a “nailed it!” vs. immediately following a very guttural “ooof!’ LOL!
Good lessons in each. Thanks to the pilots who were willing to share!
Clearly some dog owners who need a reality check.

I personally wouldn't take my skis on water.
Both my racing skis (I race) and my park skis are pretty nice and I'm defensive af over them
Dont you touch my skis
When the guy said he tried to STAND on the snow ski's in freezing water ....... dude, one ski tip into water ... well, you seen it.
@@kandaman304 Seems all around a terrible idea but there's some videos of it
When I saw the skis I immediately both knew the tip was going to clip the water, and was wondering how the could possibly make it out of that alive
I thought they were actual water skis at first. Snow skis ≠ waterskis. A pair of big, wide combo skis probably would have worked as he intended, but then how the hell do you launch with those? Even on snow. These didn't have the surface area or stability to support that kind of weight at that speed.
hate your pfp 😀

What a tremendously valuable video this is for other paramotor pilots. Good for you for making this video, I'm sure you have saved at least one life here. Well done young man, well done.
Thanks for sharing these videos, Tinker. As always, I appreciate the responsible manner in which you presented, and discussed these incidents.

This may be one of my favorite episodes of this series yet. Very informative and very interesting clips / situations. That 50-60% collapse in #5 was reeeeeeally sketchy though. So glad that guy was okay.
That last guy with the water-skis.... i think a lot of what helped him was that he remained calm. flipping out usually makes things worse. cool, educational videos! i love watching.
The ski one: that’s why you always put tips of the skis up
Welp I used to watch these vida 2 years ago and I’m finally back love from S.C bro🤘🏾🤘🏾

Excellent explanations! Good learning experience. Thanks, Tucker.
So, what I took away from all of this is that if I want a free ride to go smooth then I need to hold on tighter to the pilot's ankle.
These crashes almost makes me not want to paramotor.
ALMOST.
It's good to learn from those guys' unexpected mishaps. Thanks to all those involved for releasing their vids.
Great lessons! Thank you for sharing & commenting.

Another great video with many good lessons to be learned.
My dog runs and hides under my F250 when he hears a 2-cycle engine start up. He can see everything from the comfort of the shade 👍😁👍
Love this video series. So much to learn.
Not worried about the dog, what about the guys ankle? That dogs full weight pulled on that guy while its teeth slide off his ankle.
Shame on the dog owner... no leash laws there?
Maybe it was just hooked on clothes? Idk

Thank you for sharing! There is quite some lessons and after I saw this video still planning taking classes next month...
Good series. Thanks for posting and thanks to the pilots that sent in the footage.
When Brad says “Grab your wing dude” it sounds like jack black
Ha
I think within my first dozen or so flights there was a day when a front blew in and things got a little crazy. I ended up landing safely but got yanked on my back; fortunately with a sturdy V3 that was completely unaffected. I managed to grab a side of my glider and pull it in to get it under control. After talking with other pilots I learned about the B-stall technique and haven't had trouble since...
Though I'd also like to mention if you're coming in, in pretty fast wind, landing power on can give you a moment to get on your feet and maintain minor thrust and control while you get your Bs in hand and get ready to pivot and pull.
Haha thanks for that
Ivan from Pine Hollow Auto Diagnostics (RUclips channel) is down taking the Aviator PPG course right now!
Another great video Tucker. I'm a delta wing trike pilot and was at the Salton sea fly in 08. There was a guy there that had at least 4 Whippets. They're basically smaller grey hounds. Very cool dogs, very friendly. The guy that owned them had converted a ppg trike with a mast to mount a tandem Wills hang glider wing. It was cool! Super, super nice guy! The guy would buzz it around on the edge of the landing zone without the wing and would go from one end of the fly in to the other. And these sweet dogs would run with their noses 1 foot from the prop! The first time I saw it I ran him down and told him. He said "yeah, we do it all the time"..... Sorry but there should be no unrestrained dogs or unrestrained little children at a fly in. A had my daughter Jennifer's little chihuahua at this same fly-in but she was never off a leash unless I had her in my arms. Can you imagine your dog with 1/3 of his snout? It would break my heart!
That dog wasn't small and I hope it bit the pilots shoe or sock. Even a chihuahua latching onto your ankle will draw blood! This dog could inflict severe lacerations. Fly safe brother and if you ever want to fly N.E. AZ drop me a line. I'm in Holbrook Az. just 23 miles from the Petrified forest/ Painted desert. 39 miles from Meteor crater. You have to check out Canyon De Chelly. It's @ 65 miles away.Google it bro! Dave

Coming from a cold country I've been in ice cold water both voluntarily and involuntarily several times. The greatest lesson I've learned is: Don't panic! This sounds like an obvious thing, but it's very important. When your body is subjected to ice cold water your body is going to react violently, and that can be fatal if you're not prepared for it. If you try to relax only for a few (5 - 10) seconds your body - and your mind - will calm down surprisingly quick. It will still be cold and scary but you'll think much more clearly, and your chances of survival will increase significantly. Panicking in cold water is very dangerous.
If you are going to do any activity were you potentially can end up in cold water I highly recommend jumping into cold water with clothes under safe conditions so you know how it feels and how your body reacts.
i randomly found your vids. now im hooked and have looked into trying paramotors in my copuntry

Things not to do!
Dragged, unhooked one riser when I got my footing, worked. Nice video Tucker.
Those dogs have a very bad owner. It is sad and infuriating to see that.
6-8 mph wind isn't much when in sheltered areas, the moment you climb above the terrain or trees etc, it can get gnarly very quick, I found that out as an RC model flier.
Might be a good way to judge the wind in a new to you location. Send up an RC plane.
I fly gyros which handle turbulence very well but it can still get tricky on landing. I once was landing on a beach I'd flown from and had my vertical stab kicking me sideways the wind was blowing out to sea over broken treeline, just before touchdown I powered up aborted landing and realised I was likely to hit same again as wind had picked up on my flight. I felt panic start to rise. I forced myself to calm down and did a careful approach and all was fine. But on driving out I looked at the massive wide and open farmland just in from the beach I had so many places to land safely into wind and the worst that would have happened would be to walk a km to get the car and trailer. It struck me perhaps this guy didn't need to land where his car is. Something to think about.
In sailing, we have something we refer to as the 50/50/50 rule. Its a kind of oversimplification that is used to explain the danger of cold water. Essentially, in a study of cold-water rescue operations, it was found that in 50 degree water, 50% of people did not survive 50 minutes. Having a life jacket increased the odds of survival by 50%. Beyond that, it comes down to clothing, response, and more general phyiscal attributes (fitness, fat %, etc).
Analyzing that cold water response, I'd say first that the water was likely less than 50 degrees, so danger was very high. As for life jacket, that's essentially akin to the flotation in this case. For clothing, he appears to be wearing good, synthetic cold-weather clothing. Synthetic is important here, as it will help to retain heat even when wet (though not so much while still in the water). Couldn't ask for a better response from the sound of it. Overall, I'd say your analysis was right Tucker, for one really bad crash scenario, it turned out as well as it could have. Finally, while I would say he was lucky, I certainly wouldn't say he survived that one by accident. He did everything right and it paid off.
Idk why, but hearing that dude yell help and then hearing Brad say "I'm here bud" made me cry
The dog just wanted to know what it’s like to fly. He believes he can fly, he believes he can touch the sky

Nice view of the Scotia Bluffs at around 8:32 I'm sure that's not what was going through your head.
Mountains and redwoods chop up the wind here and the wind always blows on the Eel River. Upstream as it warms and switches downstream as it cools.
Glad you're ok!
Here’s one for you Tucker. I’m a very new pilot with only 11hrs to date, my 2 buddies and I that I met while taking training (we all 3 have our own rigs now) were meeting up at AZ Farms in Arizona early in the morning near where we all live. I’m 56 yrs old and have always considered myself in good shape, I’m not a runner but active in hiking, weight lifting, and I like to walk for exercise. On this morning there was zero wind, I’ve had many zero wind launches mostly during training and was always successful, I was all set up and ready to send it, so off I go. Running running, power power, full power and bam I pull my hamstring. I immediately let go of the throttle the minute It pulled, not consciously, but I think just subconsciously, and of course my next step my leg failed from the pulled hamstring witch cause a crash. Fortunately I hit the kill switch the minute I went down, but still nicked my prop on the ground and skinned up my leg and forearm pretty good. Part of my preflight now is to hydrate and some simple leg stretches. Oh, and I forgot to turn on the GoPro just before I launched, so no good footage.
It would gave been epic if the dog fell in deeper water...... and a shark got it.. or better yet, the owner swims out to get his dog and the shark got him.
I hate incompetent dog owners

These crash videos make my legs tense up
First video - dude gets dragged due to high wind. Gets assistance killing the wing. Then takes off his helmet while still connected to the wing. That's a good way to make a bad situation worse.
Good rule of thumb: helmet and gloves go on before connecting to the wing, and stay on until you are no longer connected to the wing.
Kudos to the pilots who are mature enough to leave ego at the door and turn mistakes into learning opportunities for themselves and others. It's a good trait for flying and life in general.
