I searched for this song, befote i had computer access, some guy at a flea mkt ordered it for me, a couple wks he called and said he would bring it to me, an hour or so away, i said no i would pick it up, on the way home i played it , first time i act heard merle sing it, i looked over at my wife and she was crying, ive sang it for many yrs now, sometimes its hard to get through, its a powerful message

My Dad requested we play this song at his funeral. He originally wanted me to sing it for his service but there was no way I could. One of my favorite Hag songs ever.

I agree, a lot of his songs should have ranked higher on the charts, especially in the 80's and 90', a few in 2000's....but, the radio stations didn't want to play anything that would make the listener lift their head and stir their emotions.....this was a quote that Merle said on a show he did in 1997....that's what has killed country music....but Merle went on to say that because his songs do stir emotions, his songs can be the "kiss of death".....I love George Strait and I am glad he has over 50 #1 hits....but, honestly, Haggard should have had well over that and in a shorter period of time than "King George"(that's what everyone likes to call him)....but I believe Haggard is and always will be "THE KING"!

I went to see Merle at the Orange Show in San Bernardino in '94. Merle sang this song, among many others, and I will admit I wasn't much interested in hearing anything "new". I wanted to hear all the songs I already knew... I sneaked in a cassette recorder and recorded a bootleg copy of the whole show, and listened to it after I got home. THE BEST SONG OF THE SHOW WAS THIS ONE!!! "In my next life" should have been a huge hit for Merle. Damn country radio
