Well said. Glad you commented. I think your comment is a perfect example of discipline without damage, like one of the women mentioned.
I think its interesting that a lot of folks' justification is "that's just how they communicate" or "how dare they talk back" or "I woulda got it worse." Of course the mother's frustration is warranted but I think the larger, somewhat sadder issue is that we collectively haven't seen more examples of how to teach consequences or discipline without violating our children's (who will use these examples to navigate their lives and existence) boundaries. Or practice reacting vs responding or the importance of our own voices or how to correct our behavior without beating ourselves up. Yes, this situation for them may not be that serious. But I know for sure that someone with similar experiences could have a future where they now hear a voice telling themselves they're dumb whenever they make a mistake. Words matter...especially from parents, that's all.
Pile three was on point. Especially, when you said stuff about Barbie and Daft Punk, and then the energy of him not putting any effort into communicating with me, even though he has so many avenues to do so. I’ve asked him to communicate with me more, but he doesn’t do it because he lacks the confidence to. I tried for a whole two months (we were talking for four months before this) to get them to be more open with me and it didn’t work as well as I thought it would. In the end, there’s just too much baggage. And I was willing to hold some because I thought he was a good person.
