the way their eyes went wide at seeing their potential, what they could have and promptly smashing the tv...i almost want to cry, i've never seen something put my thoughts into something so clear
As a trans guy, this is actually pretty accurate. The feeling of being liberated and allowed to do what you want with your body is so refreshing. I am counting the days until I can have this luxury..
an attempt to break down the meaning of this video! - edit: rewatched the video several times and have lots of clarifications to make to my original theory! go down to the bottom to see the updated version - So, it’s a trans allegory. Very overtly. You don’t put a trans flag with a supportive message at the end of something that’s not a supportive trans allegory. Glad we could get this straight. I just wanted to get that out of the way before explaining further. In this universe, being a rabbit corresponds to being male and being a cat corresponds to being female, if you choose to use colors as your baseline. The main character (I’ll be calling him X and using male pronouns for him) has the body of a cat and the heart of a rabbit - a female body and male heart. X is clearly living in distress- the TV screen flickering between the gender symbols represent gender confusion, so he presumably goes to the doctors to find out what’s wrong with him The doctors can clearly see that he has a male heart, but they choose to forge the results and tell him he’s female instead, which throws X into a breakdown over his identity. This is where the video gets difficult to interpret. One can make an argument for the person in the rabbit hoodie (Z) as a good or bad guy. Obviously, they aren’t real, and are simply another facet of X. They’re a rabbit, but their main theme is pink. If you choose to say that they’re female, then the story lines up much more neatly - X literally lights Z on fire and destroys that part of himself. If you interpret them as male, then it becomes more complex. X destroys Z, his male side, and yet still rejects femininity after he comes back to reality. That could be a representation of being non-binary. However, the first option seems most likely to me; he sees Z as a cruel parody of himself, someone who will never be a boy, because no matter how much they pretend to be a rabbit, they’re still swathed in pink. Lighting Z on fire represents destroying that part of himself, destroying that shame, and stepping forwards to live as a rabbit and male. Amazing video. -- EDIT AND UPDATE -- After having rewatched the video multiple times, I have some more thoughts to add! At the end, the screen changes between two symbols - the male symbol, and the female symbol wearing a bow tie and colored like the male symbol. My best guess is that the second symbol is meant to represent a trans rabbit, or trans male - blue soul, wearing male clothes, but shaped like a cat. It’s a really nice touch and I love it! The lighter and rabbit ears are recurring motifs. The ears have a pretty clear meaning - a temporary measure X uses to hide their agab, equivalent to binding, packing, tucking, etc. The lighter, however, has lot more possible meanings. X has it for the majority of the video and it’s tangible even in the false world with Z, which leads me to believe it’s meant to represent something. It could be something like self-destructive or other-destructive habits, something lighters are often used to portray, but dysphoria is not so easily beat by that, and it would be rather insensitive to imply it could be. My belief is that it’s supposed to represent gender euphoria. The lighter noticeably is blue and has a male icon on it, the fire it creates is teal, and it burns down a distinctly feminine side of X. This aligns strongly with euphoria and/or the coping mechanisms used to fight dysphoria. The dream of burning everything down is a hope I think is shared by many trans individuals - not literally, of course, but if one could somehow completely destroy their past and the previous self they were told that they were, I doubt many trans people would ignore that chance. It’s a violent ending but it lines up - finally gathering the courage to say “I don’t want to do this anymore” and set it all on fire. We see X retreat from the television to immediately smash it after seeing that Z shares their face. We’re all scared of mirrors here. Seeing someone covered in pink, surrounded by pink, who is clearly still just a cat pretending to be a rabbit, and seeing their own face on that person reflected back at them made X break it. It’s typical to not be able to recognize one’s reflection as belonging to oneself when very dysphoric, and the sudden shock of X realizing that it was their own visage in the television is what made them snap. More support for the fact that X is a trans man- the rabbit with the ears torn off and cat ears stitched in their place. I hardly need to explain this one. There are tons of other little details I could rant about for hours, but I’ll close it off here. This is a lovely video and was a big surprise from one of my longtime favorite animators! Also, despite this channel not expressing support to trans people before now (which is fine, don’t get me wrong), the viewers are taking it very well!! I’ve seen so little hate in the comments :D Also, thank you for making this. It means more to us than you can imagine.
The part about doctors is also a real issue that a lot of trans people face - medical staff may not respect their identity and instead refer to them as their deadname and gender assigned at birth :/
tbh i didnt understand the 2nd half (where he sees himself dressed up as the rabbit) at all until i found this comment, but your explanation makes so much sense! i appreciate this break down :-)
Love this interpretation! My own interpretation about Act II is that it has to do with X finally finding media that shows people like him. There's so many televisions in his room that are always showing the same thing: Rabbits are blue (male) and Cats are pink (female). X is always watching the screens in front of him desperately throughout the first act, as if looking for something that represents him. You can even see soda cans littering the floor in front of the screens! Not to mention, he's putting bunny ears on cat dolls & cat ears on bunny dolls just to be able to see something that even remotely resembles himself But then, in Act II, a television BEHIND him turns on and that's where he sees Z for the first time. X gets 'transported' to the other world but I think this is just a visual metaphor for viewing whatever he's watching and how he's projecting onto it. It seems scary and strange at first, which I think makes complete sense if X is meant to represent someone repressing their LGBT identity and seeing others who are out and proud for the first time. X sees Z, a person amongst this rabbit group who looks almost exactly like him except WAY happier. X seems almost unsure of everything as he comes closer and lifts up Z's rabbit hood, where he can finally see that Z has cat ears just like him. Then it's like BAM -- there's that realization that everything X was told is wrong. We switch to the real world where X is smashing the other televisions and sets everything on fire. Burning it all away to start anew with the knowledge that it's okay for him to be a rabbit. We see that as he places the rabbit ears back on his head. That's my interpretation of it! LOVED this MV so much omg & love seeing other theories and stuff!!
@@archy2504 That’s a super neat theory too!! We can never know for sure what the original creator intended (unless they tell us, but they have no need to do that) but I’m really glad that lots of people are getting the same message of someone finally accepting themselves for who they are :)

As someone who's been hating the body they've been born in and has been constantly told I am and will always be my assigned gender, thank you. I've been struggling with this for what feels like forever and this feels incredibly validating to watch.
Nearly shed a tear watching this, as many of my friends are going through this daily... It's just beautiful, no need for words when the animation talks by itself. Best of wishes to you, zemyata, so you can be you too, and to all of your fans and people watching this great video!
As someone who’s genderfluid, this hit home. Especially the ending- wanting to be more masculine or feminine but not specifically fixed to a girl or boy. That’s what I got out of the ending- that they realized they don’t need the binary of gender to be masculine or feminine presenting. Thank you for this video, zem ❤️
Don't get me wrong. I understand that it's a metaphor for being trans. But i think the way I'm taking it pulls in the lyrics of the song along w/ the mv. The many phrases of jealousy, like "just wanna be cool" "im not crying i just hate me" and "i wanna be you" hit extremely hard, since i've been going through similar feelings. The agitation of the cat says all of this, which leads to the grudge of burning down the room. Act 2 is very dear to me because it finally shows the cat pushing through all the hatred and keeping their eyes on the goal: expressing their true self. This is my comfort video and song. I love it to death.

I didn't realize this was a metaphor for Trans identity until seeing the flag at the end, which just wrapped everything beautiful together! From that point it definitely hit even harder, and you did such a beautiful job conveying the matters of Dysphoria, the labels society wants to force on us and the matter of breaking norms of expression and gender. I'm Bigender (Man/Woman; note not all Bigender people are those two genders), so seeing this meant a lot! I loved how the character was shown in this badass symbol of Trans empowerment, and showing up the fact that biology doesn't define gender and never will. Thanks for this work, Trans rights! :D

Yess trans rights! I love the way u depicted how he has the heart of a rabbit (boy) but looks like a cat (girl) so people look at what’s physical and judge on that even tho that isn’t what trans people are. Being trans is like being stuck in another persons body and I think you depicted that well by showing how he was born a cat but has a heart of a rabbit Thank u for coming to my ted talk
Thank you, after coming back after watching this for the first time the lyrics and symbols are even more meaningful and thoughtful then before. And id like to think and type about it a little. in the beginning his eyes flash with images of a bunny with a bowtie, and a cat with a bow, but by the end of it the screen flashes with bunnies & bows and cats & bowties, aswell as the bear to represent anyone outside of that, and half cats and half bunnies. Blue, pink, either one. Its extremely meaningful how in the beginning, he hides himself away and says “no, its nothing, i just hate myself.” The ruler on the throne in the next sequence says otherwise, taunting and telling them to “come to me”, to introduce them into the fact that they, themselves, are trans. The bunny presented in pink, but having cat parts underneath, from the symbolism, a feminine trans man. Thanks again, from the trans community I appreciate the such accurate and beautiful representation that doesn’t exclude anyone, and follows the story of one certain trans person. A special thanks to the bunny man in the story, i wish him luck upon his journey.
wanted to comment bc i keep revisiting this video-the animation is so smooth and beautiful and the message behind it caught me off-guard the first time i watched, but it’s really nice to see representation like this! i love the details and colors of the video, and it just gets better every time i watch ❤️

All nonbinary means is, well, outside of the gender binary (strictly male or strictly female). So, lots of variety in how people look, act, identify, and decide to transition, (if they decide to -- for many it's a super personal thing)! I cannot speak for every nonbinary person bc of how different everyone is, so if more research interests you I'd listen to many different sources.
Same! The act II part made me so happy, especially when they lifted the mask of their future self and burned everything
As a trans man who has not completely transitioned yet, and who knows all too well the struggles of being trans and dealing with people who don't understand, I really appreciate this video. It always makes me feel so seen and appreciated when people take the time to bring light to the trans community and the struggles we all go through. Not to mention just how beautifully animated this was, your style is so unique and just overall satisfying to watch! :]

the way their eyes went wide at seeing their potential, what they could have and promptly smashing the tv...i almost want to cry, i've never seen something put my thoughts into something so clear
As a trans guy, this is actually pretty accurate. The feeling of being liberated and allowed to do what you want with your body is so refreshing. I am counting the days until I can have this luxury..
an attempt to break down the meaning of this video!
- edit: rewatched the video several times and have lots of clarifications to make to my original theory! go down to the bottom to see the updated version -
So, it’s a trans allegory.
X is clearly living in distress- the TV screen flickering between the gender symbols represent gender confusion, so he presumably goes to the doctors to find out what’s wrong with him
The doctors can clearly see that he has a male heart, but they choose to forge the results and tell him he’s female instead, which throws X into a breakdown over his identity.
-- EDIT AND UPDATE --
After having rewatched the video multiple times, I have some more thoughts to add!
I’ve seen so little hate in the comments :D
Also, thank you for making this. It means more to us than you can imagine.
The part about doctors is also a real issue that a lot of trans people face - medical staff may not respect their identity and instead refer to them as their deadname and gender assigned at birth :/
This was a super good analysis. I wish we could bookmark comments.
tbh i didnt understand the 2nd half (where he sees himself dressed up as the rabbit) at all until i found this comment, but your explanation makes so much sense! i appreciate this break down :-)
Love this interpretation!
Not to mention, he's putting bunny ears on cat dolls & cat ears on bunny dolls just to be able to see something that even remotely resembles himself
But then, in Act II, a television BEHIND him turns on and that's where he sees Z for the first time.
I don't know how this is gonna go down, But Given Takayan's banger music skills, this song in particular, and Zem's incredible animating skills, I already know this is going to be amazing.
Love how at the end of the video there’s a bear (non-binary/agender), cat-rabbit (bigender) and there’s a bit about feminine presenting rabbit/masculine presenting cat.
And they all valid.
There’s more about “presentation” (a lot of combinations) but you get the point. Love to see that
It's actually feminine being cat and masculine being rabbit.
What about the last one?
A Cat with both blue, red and pink stripes... Wait is it gender fluid?

im crying rn, this is beautiful the message and metaphors are amazing, ive already watched it through a couple times and it really does portray being trans so well, i love this and i hope you continue to make things like this ❤️
As someone who's been hating the body they've been born in and has been constantly told I am and will always be my assigned gender, thank you. I've been struggling with this for what feels like forever and this feels incredibly validating to watch.
I love this! As a trans man myself, it's very relatable!
CAN WE TALK ABOUT THE TRANSITION AT 1:50???
Nearly shed a tear watching this, as many of my friends are going through this daily... It's just beautiful, no need for words when the animation talks by itself.
Best of wishes to you, zemyata, so you can be you too, and to all of your fans and people watching this great video!
As someone who’s genderfluid, this hit home. Especially the ending- wanting to be more masculine or feminine but not specifically fixed to a girl or boy. That’s what I got out of the ending- that they realized they don’t need the binary of gender to be masculine or feminine presenting. Thank you for this video, zem ❤️
Me too... This video made me cry so hard after ignoring my envy on being guyish
THIS IS ALREADY IN MY INSPIRATION PLAYLIST IT HASN’T EVEN STARTED YET BUT ITS BY ZEM AND HAS TAKA’S MUSIC LIKE WHY WOULD IT NOT BE FYR
OK SO IT WAS FIRE AND I IMMEDIATELY GOT THE MESSAGE THANK YOU ZEM FOR REPRESENTING OUR COMMUNITY 🏳️⚧️💚
This is legitimately one of the best representations of being trans I have ever seen (at least from my experience as a trans nb person)
The music and visual are so good,,,,
i’m very happy the comments section can agree that takayan + zemyata = pure bliss

One of my favorite details on his character design? How the bra looks like it doesn't fit. How it looks like it's there for no reason.
"It's ok to envy". Yes. Thank you for giving me permission to be envious of your work 😭
as a trans person, seeing all these people talk about the symbolism and me understanding, it kinda breaks my heart. but, it also makes me feel a hella lot better!
this is it. it’s what it’s like
Yess trans rights! I love the way u depicted how he has the heart of a rabbit (boy) but looks like a cat (girl) so people look at what’s physical and judge on that even tho that isn’t what trans people are. Being trans is like being stuck in another persons body and I think you depicted that well by showing how he was born a cat but has a heart of a rabbit
Thank u for coming to my ted talk
