Hi Jonny just sub'd, came over form SOL. My very first car was a Mini, a red 'Y' reg 850 HLE. I think it was also an auto and was also all oil-sealed underneath. Had the most fun with it bombing around, and up and down, in multi-story car-parks! :)
Nice car man that's a great find, I've always wanted a mini but the rust issues used to scare me off, now it's just the insane prices! I agree on your point about simplicity, it's the main reason I love old cars, modern cars feel too sterile and just don't have the same appeal as the sounds, smells and feel of older ones, unfortunately the fact of the matter is that the average joe 'motorist' wants a mobile sofa, not an oily, noisy, tin can on wheels.
The Mini auto box is quite strange. It uses nested differentials, rather than epicyclic gears and there is an oil-pump on the output shaft, so in theory, you could bump start them and tow them unlimited distances. However, the pump isn't connected (it might have been in early examples) as the gearbox runs off engine oil pressure. The pump remained because it forms part of the speedo drive
Yeah, the poor old auto power-plant used in this Mini, and also in the auto versions of the Allegro and the popular 1100/1300 cars is shat on really more then it deserves. I have driven an auto one of these, and they are easily as much fun as the manuals. They are a good auto for the platform. I guess cos of the complexity of these vs manual boxes, they were not that popular with people cos if they broke down, you needed specialist service to fix them. That equals $$$, but that is true even today with a modern auto, although modern autos are much more reliable then the older ones used to be. Nothing's perfect. ;)
I owned a 1975 Clubman auto for many years and I was impressed by the gearbox. Very clever engineering. Be careful not to hit the sump - there's not a lot of ground clearance!
I used to own a Mini with an oil leak in the bell-housing that got on the starter bendix & jammed it. I became expert in removing & re-fitting the starter motor. Fortunately I lived in a reasonably hilly area so always tried to park facing downhill.
DAMON, boy have you been hard to track down, from williams F1, to 5th gear, to fully charged, to carpervert (ps, when`s the BEST tv car show coming back) and i DONT mean BOTTOM gear ! your career certainly has been varied, has anyone ever commented that you look like tv presenter johNNy smith !!!!
Congrats on the MoT pass. I used to have a 1978 Mini 850 back in 1993. Cheap to run and the most fun you can have on 4 wheels. I'd have another one in a heartbeat if the price is right.
I agree with you on the classic MoT test. Having someone independent check over your vehicle for critical safety issues seems pretty basic common sense.
In the USA at least in Washington state there are no required inspections other than emissions testing in some counties. People build rat rods that wouldn't begin to pass a British MOT test and nobody gives two figs.
Had one bought from the original owner after 3 months. They cost £5,500 new and I always knew they would be a ' classic ' , by far , in my opinion , the most ' classy and elegant ' special edition of the lot. They also came with a leather bound book, ' Mini - 30 years on ' with a slip of paper saying ' Enjoy Your New Car ' ! .Regretfully , now both sold but having owned several 'proper Minis ' , now know it is my favourite car of all time. The modern BMW pastiche may be a good car, but it cannot hold a candle to the original ' BMC ' masterpiece in terms of style and aesthetics - and it is NOT a Mini -it looks as if it has been on steroids !.Will have another before I'm done, preferably an early Mk 1 !.
I've loved every Mini I've ever owned or driven! My mum owned three consecutively back in the day. An 850, a 1000 and a Mini Clubman 1000, with the squared off front. None of them were fast, until you got to a corner.
I had a 1972 Renault 5 in 1991 with a genuine 8,000 miles. Despite the low mileage I had no end of problems with due to most of the rubber parts perishing....
Great Mini Jonny, got one exactly the same (except manual and maroon) year and a half ago!, same issue with gaiter split on MOT, very easy to DIY, excellent cars to learn mechanics on, like you I love taking it for a spin, wanted to keep it original, only changes - Maniflow exhaust (not the loud one) and speakers needed, new battery, new starter, changed the cones all round, apart from that "Dobbin" is solid and runs like a dream! as i'm a bit of a British motor fan, just bought a mint Metro GTA 1991 to add to my collection, totally original, 41k, what a laugh, and really nippy..! would be seen dead 20 years ago in one, but now absolutely love them... appreciate the engineering.
I drive a red manual 30 (Jimmy Bertie the Mini Thirty! ) I've tried to keep it standard apart from a black replacement bonnet, I didn't double check the catch and it came up. Great fun car.
Love your videos man hope you do plenty more car related vids...love the Stamford & surrounding locations I remember so well growing up 🍺 Did that black Renault gordini used to be white...he had a white one
Maybe you should ask yourself? 😄 Seriously, after watching a video about a run in a recently revived Invacar this video was serenity to perfection. It changes smoothly, not much engine noise. Park it alongside anew MINI then you get really scared of just how small the original is.
Reminds me of my mint mk1 Mini Minor I had some 18 years ago. Blokes at work would ask to sit in it & smell the interior. It got so much attention wherever we went. Proper Mini's always bring out the best in people.
SO TRUE cars need to be driven to keep them good . Sure garage queens look nice but the bushing and internals go bad from sitting so long then starting and running once everything settles and all the lubes run down ect then the camshaft n stuff runs dry for a second and the bushing dry out
My first car, in 1991, was a 1977 Mini Clubman 1100. Bought from a trader for £175 as it was running like shite and overheating. It turned out the timing was badly out. A quick twist or two of the dissy had it running lovely again.
My first car was a 1980 mini special which I put an 1275 mg metro lump in with a Kent fast road cam and lcb manifold with manta gte recaro seats in !!! Loved that thing it flew until I bent the floor up round my knee caps one night!!!! Good time and good channel Johnny!!😊😊
On the bill of sale @ 4:49 it shows Car Tax of £462 and then VAT of £875? But to reach £875 VAT means they included the £462 tax in the total calculation... so what gives? How can you be taxed on another tax?! Also what was this "car tax" I can't find any info about it or how it was worked out? :o
I don't mind an auto but if it's auto it has to be more hp than the manual one to make up for the loss of acceleration and drivetrain loss with the auto..an autos gonna win the race everytime too as it's always going to shift at the best spot everytime
You had better explain "choke" for anyone under 35. And get a load of that AP auto box with four gears in 1965. You say that the auto was not a popular option but for many, many years it was the only small car auto option, so for the motability scheme the auto box mini was the only option and sold well.
Looks like original starter is fine .battery voltage is different to load crank capability.12.8v doesn't mean you have a good battery always need load testing as you have discovered. Still all ok now.
As per classic MOT, spot on. We will have our 1974 Capri Mk2 our through a test scenario each year regardless, you cannot take safety seriously enough. No matter how she may look.....you never know!
They need to make a mini like the original because I think some of the new ones are nearly as big as a Range Rover not as tall but the width is the same
In the USA at least in Washington state there are no required inspections other than emissions testing in some counties. People build rat rods that wouldn't begin to pass a British MOT test and nobody gives two figs.
Guys just a quick word of advice when cleaning a mini please please don't use a jetwasher. You may think I am crazy but from my experience the inside of the doors fill up with water and it is difficult to get the water to drain from them even though there are drainage holes. Other than that awesome mini good to see another one on the road. a REAL mini!!!
I stuck a steering column drop bracket on mine, stops it feeling like driving a bus but you can still get your legs in - makes a huge difference. Can get them on eBay for a fiver, the original will need drilling out though because it's a shear-bolt.
I had a brand spanking new mini cooper about 1990, I loved that car but was put right off when I saw one smashed into a cube-like mess on the back of a lorry.
My first car was a 1990 mini cooper RSP, I learned so much about driving and maintenance working on that little beast (brakes and fog light too) I traded it for an Orion 1600E....😩....with a 2 litre ZVH engine, that was a great sleeper as it was rather nippy.
I have a 1986 24k mile Le Chelsea:) great little cars., prefer a manual - but has the same lovely dials. Needs a good long run and a decent 65mph for a long while. I drove mine on the motorway recently at a steady 70mph ( Journey from Yorkshire to Isle of Wight) and kept up with the traffic - other drivers looked shocked.
Respected Mr. Journalist, how long can I keep my 2017 Jeep Compass, India idle (without driving). Will keeping idle for a month causes rust in the cylinder walls? It's because of my situation that I am in now that I am not able to use it...
It's always nice to have a old vehicle with the original dealer sticker/number plate Just found out that my 1982 CD200 Honda has the original dealer number plate 👌
I have a question, what does one of them cost now, approximately is OK, great quality and a poor quality, like a blown motor? I love the Mini and a 1300 one.
Owned 3 in my younger years. Y reg HLE, D reg Parklane and J reg 91 (pre injection) Cooper. Loved them all but the Cooper was my fave with its Minisport exhaust leaky sunroof
My first car 16 years ago was on the surface an immaculate Mini 30..... Unfortunately 17 year old me didn't know what they were looking for. It was absolutely rotten. A year later I had to sell it as it needed essentially a new shell.... I was gutted but it was a lovely introduction which led to a modified 1293 mini city... Absolutely love these cars!
What a beauty. If our road tax system took account of a car’s weight and size we’d see more sensibly sized cars like this. Cars don’t have to be lardy just to incorporate good safety & convenience systems.
My first car at 17 was the Austin Mini 30 in burgundy red, absolutely loved owning and driving it. Bought it for 900 quids and the insurance was 1200 quids.
New brake hoses a good ideas old ones tend to collapse internally and give a one way valve effect, holding the brakes on. Don't know if you went round to see how hot the wheels were when you were on the drive home. Hope it's all sorted now.
My first ever car was a black Mini, albeit a 1962 Mini Minor 850 with an Austin 1300 engine swap and Cosmic alloys. I quite fancy getting another. Mind you, I also had a Renault 5 Gordini turbo and seeing your MOT man's example, I want another one of those too!
Cool find. Sticky Fingers do seat extensions so you can get the seat a little further back, and there a steering wheel drops to get the steering wheel at a better angle.
If you've got a few years to spare - I know a couple blokes who can just slap a 4wd toyota drivetrain in it. *cough* ;)
project binky you say
That is one solid MINI from underneath
Transport Evolved Isn’t it just Nikki. I was shocked.
It's a proper find. And auto too. 3-speed box sounded in pretty good fettle.
Hi Jonny just sub'd, came over form SOL. My very first car was a Mini, a red 'Y' reg 850 HLE. I think it was also an auto and was also all oil-sealed underneath. Had the most fun with it bombing around, and up and down, in multi-story car-parks! :)

I'm 6' 7" and i fit in my old mini cooper just fine, its the look on peoples faces when i get out of it I love
More of this stuff would be great Jonny, brilliant viewing 👍🏼 What happened with the mini?
Well wear Jonny, gorgeous motor-especially compared to the modern bloated chud 'mini'.
The Mini auto box is quite strange. It uses nested differentials, rather than epicyclic gears and there is an oil-pump on the output shaft, so in theory, you could bump start them and tow them unlimited distances. I LOVE the fact that its an auto!

The Car Is Beautiful.
@CARPERVERT I’m really happy we still get to see you after fifth gear ended
I owned a 1975 Clubman auto for many years and I was impressed by the gearbox. Very clever engineering.
Be careful not to hit the sump - there's not a lot of ground clearance!
It fell into the right hands. I agree on mots.
Loving the channel. Great to catch up on some of your older stuff. Great car.
Currently restoring a 1963 Morris mini. Love them
I used to own a Mini with an oil leak in the bell-housing that got on the starter bendix & jammed it. I became expert in removing & re-fitting the starter motor. Fortunately I lived in a reasonably hilly area so always tried to park facing downhill.
What a fun little car. With its special anniversary pedigree, I’d bet it’s a highly sought-after car. Thanks for this great video.

I agree with you on the classic MoT test. Having someone independent check over your vehicle for critical safety issues seems pretty basic common sense.
I kinda disagree, I doubt I could afford my classic if I had to mot it
Also does anyone know whether if I get an MOT on a classic and it fails, does it have to pass before being driven again?
In the USA at least in Washington state there are no required inspections other than emissions testing in some counties. People build rat rods that wouldn't begin to pass a British MOT test and nobody gives two figs.
Most states in Australia have no periodic inspection for anything, emissions, safety, etc.
Did you have a pre mot poo? I find it helps
llamedos R Absolutely
That mic improved it a lot. sounds great!
Mark Verstappen Thanks. Been learning to sync the audio but getting there...
1:21 having owned a few I really do feel that this is a BMC/BL/Rover thing lol
I almost cried when I saw the automatic shifter...
OK, so you go to an MOT and you don't go thru the car first ? I'm starting to see a pattern here.

Thanks man 👊
Love the video mini 😍 is lovely
I had a 1972 Renault 5 in 1991 with a genuine 8,000 miles. Despite the low mileage I had no end of problems with due to most of the rubber parts perishing....
I used to have a burgundy mini 30 (manual!) And it failed the MOT regularly too... Yours looks in better nick than mine was :)

😁
Why have you worded the description about yourself in a 3rd person view..
ThatGuyNamedScott. Good question. Not sure why!
Maybe you should ask yourself? 😄
Seriously, after watching a video about a run in a recently revived Invacar this video was serenity to perfection. It changes smoothly, not much engine noise. Park it alongside anew MINI then you get really scared of just how small the original is.

You say the guy loves retro fast renaults, get him on your channel! 🤟🏻
How much would it cost to convert to electric?
I do like the mini, but (in my opinion) you-re better off with a Austin 1100/1300, bigger, better access and cheaper too.
Your oil pressure light is on
It took me ages to figure out why I recognized your voice...then I realized you where on Fifth Gear
SO TRUE cars need to be driven to keep them good . Sure garage queens look nice but the bushing and internals go bad from sitting so long then starting and running once everything settles and all the lubes run down ect then the camshaft n stuff runs dry for a second and the bushing dry out

Re-Watch Johnny's Videos #006 If his fans rewatching his videos and post new comments, Johnny can take another week's vacation later in the year.

Would you say this car would be great as a first car for a car enthusiast? And cheap to insure?
I got mine a week or two ago
It’s my first car
Ridiculously ridiculously cheap
As per classic MOT, spot on.
We will have our 1974 Capri Mk2 our through a test scenario each year regardless, you cannot take safety seriously enough.
No matter how she may look.....you never know!
Ps in Lincs if you fancy seeing it 😂
She is beautiful and preety
Horrible to work on , noisy, cold , wet floors, uncomfortable ride absolutely no build strength in case of an accident ..... no thanks.
We don't have MOT tests at all over here. You should see some of the junk driving on the roads! Scary...
mate just because you're mot exempt doesnt mean you cant have a check up.... What the fuck are you on about? No mot or tax is great.
Mot exemption... what?! Let’s all drive 40 year old cars and not worry about how safe they become over time, Stupid idea!
They need to make a mini like the original because I think some of the new ones are nearly as big as a Range Rover not as tall but the width is the same

The District Garage Helsby! , Helsby is my home village,

I think anyone that uses a prsssure washer ( and the aggresive detergents ) on a car should be shot.😁
5:48 lol, the track is 'just' wide enough to fit over the trench, how cute xD
I stuck a steering column drop bracket on mine, stops it feeling like driving a bus but you can still get your legs in - makes a huge difference.
Can get them on eBay for a fiver, the original will need drilling out though because it's a shear-bolt.
I'm not convinced that MOT is a good idea..
I had a brand spanking new mini cooper about 1990, I loved that car but was put right off when I saw one smashed into a cube-like mess on the back of a lorry.
Never realised they made a black version of the Mini 30 - I've only ever seen the burgundy variants. Lovely looking thing! :)
spainter1985 Yes, only 1000 black cars sold.
spainter1985 perlescant cherry red
Nice to have a car where you can see out of all the windows when you drive.
Nowadays, cars have zero visibility and rather dangerous.
I once would have dismissed the auto box but not now. Got a bit of gout in my left foot!
My first car was a 1990 mini cooper RSP, I learned so much about driving and maintenance working on that little beast (brakes and fog light too)

Naaaaaaah
Respected Mr. Journalist, how long can I keep my 2017 Jeep Compass, India idle (without driving). Will keeping idle for a month causes rust in the cylinder walls? It's because of my situation that I am in now that I am not able to use it...
Hi Johnny just found your channel and loving it.
It's always nice to have a old vehicle with the original dealer sticker/number plate
Just found out that my 1982 CD200 Honda has the original dealer number plate 👌
I have a question, what does one of them cost now, approximately is OK, great quality and a poor quality, like a blown motor? I love the Mini and a 1300 one.
Is an automatic Mini that bad?
@8:01
Bahhh. Burrr. Bahhh. Burrr..
Owned 3 in my younger years. Y reg HLE, D reg Parklane and J reg 91 (pre injection) Cooper. Loved them all but the Cooper was my fave with its Minisport exhaust leaky sunroof
Excellent stuff again Mr Vert .. Another very nice friend of yours .. Although I've always enjoyed Mr Harris hooning around in cars ..
My god you know your getting old when a car you brought new has become a classic 1989 !
Great cars I learnt to drive in a Mini 25. Thumbs up.
Brilliantly filmed and superb picture quality...plus great car etc....A+++++++
What a beauty. If our road tax system took account of a car’s weight and size we’d see more sensibly sized cars like this. Cars don’t have to be lardy just to incorporate good safety & convenience systems.
bmw owners take notes this is real mini.
My first car at 17 was the Austin Mini 30 in burgundy red, absolutely loved owning and driving it. Bought it for 900 quids and the insurance was 1200 quids.
Ugh, one day I'll get my '89 Mini out of hibernation and reanimated... one day...
Mikeado66 Do it. Make a vid
In two parts, including the MOT
I've owned my Mini 30 (Cherry Red) since I was 13 - I'm 32 now and I doubt I will ever part with it! This one looks lovely!
District garage is still going secondhand car dealers now
Maybe about time my 73' New Zealand spec mini 1000 is taken out of its 15 year hibernation.. becoming a rare sight in the southern hemisphere
one of the big gripes motoring journalists always said about mini automatics were they they were too quick, as in they'd go to 4th at about 25mph
How simple cars can be...and bumpy. But fun :) How's your head? I saw you bump it once or twice on the roof LOL
It's like a limo compared to your PolskiFIAT 126! It's a little British beauty!
New brake hoses a good ideas old ones tend to collapse internally and give a one way valve effect, holding the brakes on. Don't know if you went round to see how hot the wheels were when you were on the drive home. Hope it's all sorted now.
M.O.T. passed happy days, its a really nice car, pearlescent cherry red was the burgundy one,i loved mine and kept it clean, took it to shows.
Body-kitted 316-shed Go Gordini. So so sooooo rare
Beautiful car. Do you still own it?
I liked this until I realized it's automatic. What fun is that?
Cool find.
Sticky Fingers do seat extensions so you can get the seat a little further back, and there a steering wheel drops to get the steering wheel at a better angle.
