You can see rocks and jumps coming and react accordingly in time if you try to stay around the center. I'm genuinely confused how Jacob seems to think the game is primarily luck-based even with his amount of experience in this game. The game is purposely balanced around making the camera zoom out with 4 players and zoom in with fewer. This makes it so that players who are behind can react with more time while players who are ahead are more likely to hit obstacles but not guaranteed to die. You can see this balance when Jacob hits the rock as the only player, but solidly has time to mash out and keep playing instead of dying.
Yaki with dungeon duos don’t even worry about it. I have done story mode so many times that I am used to the forever moving platform but if you’re not expecting/used to it is like the worst!
