1920s Paint Sprayer [Restoration]
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 21 сен 2024
- This restoration was on a 1920s paint sprayer made by the Crown Spray Gun MFG. Co.. Once again, there is not much information on this tool online and my access to American library sources, but from what I could find, this company began in 1913 and produced products until at least the 1950s out of their Los Angeles, California location.
I picked up this paint sprayer/compressor a few years ago because its design caught my eye. It was made with two diaphragm pumps that push air into a long tube and finally out to the spray gun. You can see a version of this paint sprayer in a 1929 photoshoot here: digitallibrary....
I replaced all gaskets and diaphragm with oil-resistant fabric-reinforced rubber to match as close to original as possible. I left the aluminum bare as I really don't like to paint over aluminum. I had to completely remake the top tube and fasteners as they were too pitted to be salvaged. I also made sure to oil this tool like crazy during assembly.
I ended up powering it with a drill as my original motor setup was making the tool spin way too fast. It seem to work, but not as well, at the lower rpm.
Maybe I can actually use this to do some airbrushing on future restorations!
I would like to thank Evapo-Rust for sponsoring this video.

The re-manufacturing of the plaque was impressive!
As soon as he got done sanding, I wanted to do that for a sign myself, came out great
Yeh, the plaque came out awesome! totally impressive.
I second that notion.
My goodness, what an absolute treasure this channel is. It's got everything you could want, including lasers!
The only intro that nobody skips on YT.
ikr
It's entertaining, he varies it up every now and then, it's not super long, and it's well done. Lots of giant companies could learn from it!
Oh yeah that is so true😃
I skip it every time, who wants noise in their resto vids? I don't, that's why I watch this channel.
Can confirm
I’ve never heard a real laser in person but something seemed a bit off about the sound of that laser.
I was concerned too, but it told me not to worry.
Ъ
Then you fully admit that’s how a laser could sound, since you’ve never heard one.
Specially after a few beers!
@@HandToolRescue i guess we don't talk about the pigeon ?
I say that you are a wizard AND really comedic. I love your sense of humor. We don't know when you pop up to make us laugh. On the other hand, I enjoy watching tools I never knew existed, projects that are so big and complicated, and you do it with ease. The birds head had me laughing. Many thanks for your talents, and for making these great videos.
That pigeon head at 14:49 caught me off guard
Must have been speaking to Uri Tuchman recently.
I was thinking WTF????? myself there.
Safety Blursed
That’s not a pigeon head, it’s just the way he parts his hair.
me to when camera zoomed back i saw Bird head i start ROFL
How you keep in mind what goes where, in what order, and at how much tension, simply amazes me. I thoroughly enjoy your videos
I mean it's probably pretty easy for him to keep track of the order & such, seeing as he films the disassembly
In these extremely difficult times, watching your videos provide me with a sense of ease. Thank you. Peace.
I freaking love the intro! Brings me back to the '70s! I always listen to it three or four times.
Excellent video, HTR. After painting for 30 yrs. including much spraying, I was fascinated by the 20's technology of sprayers along with their compressors. Nice job, I'd love to try that unit out.
Great restoration . I love tools from that era , l inherited a bunch of old tools from my dad , much more durable than modern big box store tools . I really enjoy some of the very subtle humor you throw in every now and then . Thanks 😊😊
Oh great
All this antique tools was made perfectly, so many years and still is working like new, only need cleaning and refresh in the right hands
You are awesome 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Whenever you can, always get tools. And if coin permits, always modify old tools to modern spec. Better cords, plugs, brushes, to the extreme, brushless motors vs the original windings (tho that's for the advanced class). Modern garbage doesn't even come close, breaks apart in your hands, it's expensive as frak and for no good reason either, since production costs don't even bite a third of the selling price.
@@aserta I always tell the younger people to NOT buy new unless absolutely necessary. It doesn't matter if its a tool or not.
I bought a clock radio because it had a CD player in it and I wanted to wake to music. It lasted 2 months and was $75.00 So I dug out my old Panasonic clock radio that was over 25 years old and it is still on my bedside table working as great as the day I bought it.
The same goes for most tools and household products unless of course they were made in a foreign country. When we stopped making items I believe that's where we went wrong.
Yeah after all these years and a complete rebuild it still doesn't work worth a💩
@@jusb1066 I think he just doesn't have a period correct airbrush
More no pressure regulator. It's spitting for inconsistent pressure and mabie the paints to thick. He probs dident play with it much to get it playing prefect, just enough to show it's pushing air as intended.
It’s been too long! I’ve been watching other restoration channels to get my fix. I watched a guy restore a FAKE SWORD!!! I need more of the real thing

The rusty blue Makita drill is an awesome one.
I bet Evaporust couldn’t even touch that “rust”.

The laser noise your machine makes, may I say, is ✨SPECTACULAR✨
You did a great job on this that brass plaque looked great! Guess the valves were not quite right as of the low pressure coming out. You have great skills .
Very nice, I can't believe how quickly you work.....You're a wizard Harry....
That ID badge re pop was super satisfying! Great job.
I swear, if you opened a museum for all the odd machinery you've restored, I'd drive there from Kentucky to go see it. Keep up the good work.
I live in the Eastern US and I think I would hear the explosion when that workbench catches fire
I'm still mad that excessively flammable workbench has yet to get an acting credit in the open.
Bro the ISS will hear that if it ever happens
@@LeglessWonder It's space. They might see it, maybe feel it, but I really doubt they are going to hear it :)
@@High_Caliberthere technically is a really tiny amount of atmosphere at the ISS' altitude, that's why they have engines onboard to reboost periodically. the air molecules are spaced so far apart they stop behaving like a "gas" and more like tiny individual particles pinging around, so most of acoustics stop applying. but sound is just pressure waves, and if the amplitude is high enough, it'll make the pressure needed to do anything, although at that point, whether that even counts as a "sound" you can "hear" vs a "periodic massive hypersonic gas jet" you can "get obliterated by" is debatable. a large enough explosion could theoretically produce such a rapid increase in pressure that it would bulge the atmosphere out locally and potentially carry the noise to an object otherwise in a relative vacuum. not to mention flying debris could hit the station and make quite a racket.
you could argue that a slab of wood soaked in solvents couldn't possibly produce an asteroid-impact-level explosion, but THEY ARE ENGAGING IN HYPERBOLE AND THAT IS THE ENTIRE POINT
@@spambot7110 You are literally the most impressive spambot I've ever encountered. Whilst we are engaging in hyperbole...would an astronaut then hold his breath and stick his head outside to hear the shockwave as it approaches, or would they just stick their ears to the fuselage from the inside?
Man I will never get tired of watching you work
Thank you for sharing this with us. I just love your work, you are easily one of my favorite restoration youtubers by a long shot.
I used to work with my hands quite a bit and was very happy as a lower echelon gunsmith in a retail outlet.. However your workmanship is really impressive and top notch. Continue with the projects, I really enjoy watching you, now that I am retired.
Great face protection while wirebrushing! 😂 Your label turned out great, good job!
Uri Tuchman would love it...
Thanks!
Those super-flat one-way valves are a very clever piece of engineering.
I cant believe this guy makes enough money on RUclips to afford one of those fancy talkin' lasers.
Well, when you convert RUclips Dollars into Canadian, he's set for life!
I'm guessing it's either an undeclared product placement (Because we are entitled to know how much he gets paid to make videos we watch for free... Obviously) or he's a shill for Big Laser.
Anthony Handcock
He is leasing it on the Never, Never Plan.
He’ll never own it and never stop paying.

That 'Spra - more' decal you made looks bloody awesome.
The picture you _spra'd_ with the paint sprayer however, was a work of art and should be hanging in The Louvre.
Another work of art, belongs in a museum.
Dude, I love your artistic skills. That painting at the end... Louvre quality work!
I absolutely love your intro. Your videos are relaxing but your intro always makes me smile.
Me: dissasembled old electric motor, then watch hand tools rescue
HTR: “Keep wet in case of asbestos”
Me: 😳😱
Its likely fine, asbestos is only in old old gaskets, past the 50s they started to use it less because they found better materials
Right, but before that asbestos was like, the miracle material. They dug it up, tested it and were like "Wow, we could use this for so many things!" And they decided, "let's use it for EVERYTHING! There's no way this could ever backfire on us!" Years later, their families are entitled to compensation.
These machines are very rare, I can see you appreciate that finding this one was a real coo...coo!

When I have the stomach for it, I slow videos of trump down to half speed, just so I can laugh a little.
Excellent job! When you're out looking for new projects, keep your eyes open for a hand vise. Not only will it make a nice project but they are very useful when handling small iteams at the wire wheel.
For God's sake, man. Use some cutting fluid when you're milling through steel.
Steel doesn't need cutting fluid or cutting oil. The only time you'll notice a difference is when pushing it very hard, a slotting op, or when you need an improvement in surface finish. And the benefits in those areas are negligible. Cutting fluid is a must on aluminum, nickel alloys and superalloys (Monel, Inconel, super duplex, Hastelloy, etc).
He adds oil , but probably cut that part out. But you can cleary see some kind of oil on metal.
Great restoration
