1960s ACME Stapler [Restoration]

- This tool restoration is on a model 27BC Acme Staple Co. stapler. The Acme Staple Co. is actually still in business today. This particular stapler is somewhat difficult to date as the aluminum castings contain reference to the Camden N.J. location where Acme Staple Co. was based out of from 1909-1959, but the metal label references the Franklin, N.H location where the company was based out of after 1959. I am going to assume this stapler was made around the time of the transition between the two locations.
The first design for this type of stapler was patented in 1934 and can be seen here: patents.google...
The restoration on this tool was fairly straight forward as no painting needed to be done. After disassembly all steel parts were de-rusted and the aluminum parts were sandblasted and then tumbled with fine media for a few hours to smooth out the look. The only stock removal I did was to smooth out any large dents or scratches on the aluminum parts that may have accumulated during years of use.
The stapler came with a few copper staples in it, so I was able to test it out once put back together. It's definitely a heavy duty stapler and I can see it being used to staple thin wood boxes together in the 1960s.
The stapler was donated to me by the Good of the Land RUclips channel: / @thegoodoftheland

Hand Tool Rescue wait, you’re in Texas? I thought you’d be in Europe or Canada or something! Cool
Hand Tool Rescue ya know what my staple is ? ....... BACON LOL
@Marcelo Electrolytic corrosion. I used to restore aircraft and we ALWAYS used a jointing compound when using steel fasteners into aluminiun castings. I think it was made by a company called Hylomar.
hes in Canada or at least his mail goes there.... i think he is saying he is going to be visiting texas
@@TheMeanestGuy He is in Canada. Saskatchewan specifically.
He will be visiting Texas for an event.
Hi! So very cool. I happen to be the customer operations manager at Acme Staple Company. This stapler was actually a roofing stapler. It was used to clip a particular type of shingle together. Loved seeing the acorn in there, and the note about the bronze bushings!
You have your company history right, and I agree this one hails from sometime during the early 60s.
When I started with the company in 1998, we still sold both the staplers and the staples.
Thanks for doing this. Excellent job!
If the stapler has Camden, NJ on the side, it is likely pre 1959. Bobbi, you should see my collection of Acme staplers.
@@mystaplers how cool! And you are dead on with your history. 1959 was the big opening in Franklin, NH.
Why does it say «property of acme stapler co» on the side? Didn’t you sell the things?
Acme used to lease/loan the roofing staplers when people bought the roofing staples, way back in the day.
Very cool, for the great response. Just another viewer.🙂
That is one SOLID piece of kit. Everything, not just tools, looks SO much better without any plastic bits. After that tidy-up, that stapler could probably last another 70 years. Somehow, I can't imagine a restorer in 2089 attempting to restore "an old stapler from the 2010s".
Keep up the good work, I enjoy watching your stuff.
All the Best,
Dougie.
I am loving your videos. The humour you throw in is great. I am going back through all your older videos and having a blast.
Thank you!
I love the things you restore, and I really love your comedy. The sandblaster never gets old.
Too right. I actually laughed out loud when he did a run-up to faceplanted it. :-)
@@aussiebloke609 I did too. My wife thinks there's something wrong with me.
Good to see your toes are safe in the Crocs! We should have a dance off sometime!
Crocs are the only approved safety footwear in my shop and life.
Mate, you would definitely not be safe with crocs here in Australia. They'd eat you, that's for sure. Lol.
I call crocs "Australian Safety shoe" as it seems that in most of the video on RUclips from down under that is all the people are wearing while welding, grinding and/or building stuff. Love your steel toe ones.
Crocs rock. I have had my most recent pair so long the rivet gave way so I fixed them with a bolt with a very smooth slightly-rounded head.
The holes in Crocs is where your dignity leaks out of😆
Seeing that spring snap was like a punch in the gut
Love that Intro so much. Really appreciate the uploads. Keep up the amazing work!
I have a giant Banana phone like that, I do believe it's the banana phone 10. Much better than Apple, as it has potassium.
It really has this vibe of the 80's or something
Don't know what exactly as I wasn't alive when these intros were modern 😂
The intro IS nice! I, however, am more impressed with the approach to the bead blaster... are they called media blasters now?
I really wish he didn’t have the intros. Videos were better without them.
Sure. It's always fun and games until someone gets their spring pulled out! Gotta love your videos. And your sense of humor. Thanks
Снова и снова смотрю заставку и Господи, почему она настолько шикарна? Это гениальное творение
в стиле ретро сериалов. даа, автора юморит отлично.
Your intro is the only one one RUclips I don’t skip
Haha, thanks!
The blasting cabinet gag keeps getting funnier.
Gorgeous patina on that bronze, I love that you left it alone
The fact that an 80 heavy roller chain connecting link is used on a production product is cool.
It works! Can I have it back now😉. Just kidding,
Joseph?
Great program. Good humor. Good knowledge. Interesting machines
Thank you
Metal plates on crocs, it's next level workers safety and comforts! :)))
Thank you for getting the impact out early on those stubborn allen keys; I had a moment when you stripped the one on the shears and had to drill and tap.
It's good to see that someone else uses the same sandblasting technique that I do. Also thanks for the files, they'll come in handy when I leave my Rockwell hardness tester at home.
The files are addictive, haha.
when you broke the spring i visualize my granny telling me "are you happy ? , now you broke it"
cheers from Argentina
Uh... otro argentino... qué onda
This is the only channel that deserves to be followed. The others are all the same, a little rust remover, painted a few toys and little else.
You are the only truly original even in the choice of objects.
Keep it up!
So, ACME was a real company? They also made dynamites?
And don't forget: Back pack mounted rockets. I was going to say "strap on rockets" but that sound way to weird
ACME made every thing, anvils, safes, dynamite and cartoon props..lol
Beep beep
Just ask Wile E. Coyote, he is *their number one customer
@@YouDieLin It's meep meep. The bird don't have no lips to form a b sound.
Watching these channels makes me think that everything is going to have pins in it when I try and take things apart. But I’ve never seen any pins. When I finally see pins it’s gonna make my day. It’s the little things.
4:30 my favorite part! I am sure somewhere a squirrel winced.
He could've made more Nutella
It's Scrat!
I am always impressed by your camera work and angles. Also sometimes when you do your work from an obviously awkward angle yet still make it work. You have very steady hands. Great stuff!
Does anyone else catch themselves gritting their teeth or tensing up like you're "helping"with that impossible screw or pin??
You’re obviously skilled but I love your sense of humor!! Thanks
😍
I love thia
My favorite part about your channel is that you actually restore to what the item looked like. Imperfections and casting marks and all. You don’t smooth stuff out to what YOU think it should look like and you don’t stop to “make a new one” for everything just to show off that you have a lathe.
By watching your videos, I never get bored. Hope to see a lot of such videos in future. Regards from Pakistan.
I loved the 'sprint' to the sandblaster.....one of a kind.
Not sure if anyone has mentioned it but the shoe of the stapler is made to slide between the two pieces of the top of a box and staple them closed to each other.
kiffing That makes sense. Was it for cardboard boxes? If so, I don’t understand the need for a hardened foot.
This is a roofing stapler
I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS! They're not just fun, but they're educational AND humorous! (I especially love your introduction.) And, I'm sure glad that your wife (significant other) didn't kill you after the flame thrower. Thank you for teaching us in such a FUN way!
Haha, thank you!
My wife gets pissed at me because I let out an ecstatic screech when I see that you’ve uploaded a new video. It’s hard to hide my excitement to say the least.
Hahaha, that's awesome. Next time let out a violent scream.
lots of fond memories of those staples as a kid, ripping open boxes and sometimes cutting the palm of my hand on them.
The intro gets me every time! Great work bro
The thing I love about this channel is that he restores tools to what they most likely would've looked like it if they had been properly maintained whereas other channels (no offense) go over the top and make them look brand new and polish every part to a mirror finish. Dgmw, I like those channels too, but there's something to be said about doing it this way.
When turning captions on, the hammering is captioned [music]. They're so right!
I couldn't pull myself away from this video. I felt so attached!
Let me guess: Wile E. Coyote used this to try to staple the Roadrunner's tail to the ground, but the spring jumped out, smacked him in the head, and made him stumble over the cliff...?
LOL HAHA probably!
And here I thought Acme was a fictional corporation.....
Lol
Love the videos, some of the techniques you employ are ingenious, but above all your humour cracks me up, brilliant!.
That face you made at the camera as you removed the spring 😂
Paul Casey I rewatched that 3 times😂
This has it all, Banananana phone, safety crocs, and the most epic head plant yet! Bravo Sir! Bravo!!
Love your work.
2 things: how in the world do you know how to put things back together: photos, notes or the worlds greatest memory?
Second, It is sad to see all the small town manufacturers who used to produce such wonderful products now replaced buy imported stuff of such lesser quality.
American business sold their country for profit.
I am 70 years old and I mourn the past that had us making our own stuff 😔.
Perhaps it's not obvious, but he's literally recording himself taking the tools apart. That's part of the reason he holds various parts up to the camera.
Still in business: www.acmestaple.com
Politicians sold the country for profit.
This RUclips channel has the best intro
I was thinking why is he stretching that spring so hard
I am not a smart man.
@@HandToolRescue we all make mistakes dude
Why did you pull it all the way out.......that's what she said.
@@HandToolRescue ...LOL...At times I wonder! ;)
#watchpeopledieinside 😩
The timelapse always makes it look like you're being unbelieavably careless :P
Weird that the plate said "Property Of" instead of "Made By" Acme Staple Co.
I found that odd as well. Even the castings say that.
@@HandToolRescue I wonder if the stapler was "free" as long as you purchased their staples.
@@HandToolRescue
Somewhere an Acme repossession agent is still searching for that unreturned stapler....🙄
Took me wonder, too!
Maybe you could only rent or lease it...
Maybe that plate was an asset inventory tag? You wouldn't think a low cost tool like that would need one though. Certainly not at the manufacturer.
You remind me of a friend. Thanx 4 making these vlogs. I find them so satisfying, Sir. Peace and respect.
Thanks for the shoutout to IdidaThingy. And Ryan, it's totally unacceptable to exclude the Nutella, dude.
An almost unbelievable number of parts! Amazing!
Not sure about "steel toed Crocks" BUT enjoyed the flying leap to the sand blaster.
The stapler has hidden potentials when it came in raw and it does SHOW!!! Great restoration work!
Very nice job, my friend. Your skill is top shelf!
Thanks for sharing.
Spring has sprung by the look of it.
For what it does, that stapler has to be one of the most complicated, overbuilt contraptions ever.
You haven’t seen the Apple peeler restore, have you? That is quite a contraption!
Thank you for sparing us the sometimes tedious game of 'find the right allen key'
LOL . The spring sprung at 18:43. LOL . What did you expect it was made by the same outfit that supplied Willy Coyote. But Hand Tool Rescue persevered. Nicely done 👍👍👍
Who knew a stapler could be so complicated? Nice resto.
13:54 best sand blaster transition EVER......I laughed so hard I got a headache
The running start for the sand blaster makes all the difference. :P
Keep doing the amazing work that you do because you do really awesome work
Loved the sandblaster dash.
The good of the land is an amazing channel - and this was an amazing project. And oh yea, at 13:55 I died 😂
Superb restoration and funny guy ! Thanks for sharing, from Quebec city 🇨🇦
This dude is hilarious.... and to think he kept quiet in his videos for so long lol
I think you meant “quiet”
Still my favourite shop goof. ALWAYS something for a snort or an outright guffaw. You rock.
Haha thank you!
Holy cow! Was that stapler made during the Cold War to survive a nuclear bomb? Excellent work as always.
The wizardry is that he's able to get everything back together so that it works!
Right after you smashed the nut with a hammer, an ad for ice cream came on. RUclips scary.
Awesome opossum - looks brand new!
Only one question: *What did Joseph do* ?
I stopped the video and started reading the comments to try and find out what Joseph did.
Who would win? An expert tool restoration RUclipsr? Or one springy boi?
13:17
It puts the parts in the basket or it gets the hose again
When I tell you I watched the sandblasted sprint 3 times and laughed to tears, I'm not kidding. Thank you so much. Made my day. 🤣
Hahaha nice!
Oh I so miss seeing Rust Remover.... I have a bit of a crush on Rust Remover.... Could you also bring back Paint Stripper?
I like Strippers.... of paint :)
been going back to your older video's and I love them you're a very talented young man. Great Job
Where is the nutella? #bringnutellaback
There is (was?) shortage of Nutella recently due to strikes in the main factory. Could be the reason.
@@banmadabon wait, what? But the main factory that had strikes is located in France... wait a minute, are French frog eaters denying Italians (and rest of the world) their fair share of nutella?! That calls for revolution!!! WAR even!
@@PostAtariGeneration Maybe there are Nutella factory in France but the owner corporation is Italian (Ferrero), Don't worry for us we have subterranean stocks of Nutella to resist for years! Let the frog eaters spread Roquefort (blue cheese) on the bread with snails (escargot) on top for breakfast...The strike is going to fail!
I think Nutella asked for
a pay rise......
They breakdown was a galvanizing experience
William G. Allen invented the Allen wrench in 1909. You're welcome.
nice!
Your videos never fail to lift my mood and put a smile on my face 😁
It is necessary to make the restoration of the desktop! :)
Ксения К yes sanding and refinishing the desktop please!
Nahh, it's got character.
10.2021 das ist stupendous ! lower the basket with stapler parts into the barrel of rust remover with a hook and nylon rope so that you don't have to use your arm ! YOU ARE GENIUS !
So how do you use those hardness testers? Is it a certain sound you're listening for, or is it whichever one puts a scratch in the material?
The files less hard then the material will slide across it instead of actual remove material.
The good of the land is an awesome channel I like just as much
Ya Joseph, you know what you did...*whispers* what did he do 🤔
I don't even know what I did!
Can’t wait to see the rest of the projects in the tumbler!
The opening literally always makes me laugh.
I love the new addition to the team, Banana phone.
Get the acetylene torch. Can't be tight if it's a liquid. Just saying.
The stapler works like new again!
Couple things...
1. My name is Joseph...
2. My birthday is October 26th...
3. I have no idea what I did...
You know EXACTLY what you did, you piece of human garbage.
@@HandToolRescue I subscribed?
I don't know what your issue is Joseph, but just please stop. You are going to ruin the channel
@@thelos3999 Should he just keep quiet after what Joseph did?!
Oh, whew! It was what you did, not what I did. So many Josephs watching this channel. Okay, back to making people sandwiches!
They sure don't make 'em like that anymore, nicely done.
Thanks for the video.
Using solvents and cleaning solutions on the bench might just cause it to revert to wood... Just sayin'.
Hand Tool Rescue on my birthday! It’s a great day indeed!
Thank you for honoring garbage on the floor in your intro, it never gets any respect
man that sandblasting bit had me in tears
The Best restoration ever , love to finish the whole Video 👏 .
As of recently I now work in a factory making doors and you'll be happy to know that staplers like this are still used for rework on the fly
Interesting!
My favorite resto channel, even without the humor.
I loved the impromptu 4.12 meter dash race to the sand blaster. Needs to be in the next Olympics.
Haha, thanks!
Thanks for making me smile when nothing in my life lately makes me want to. You're the best, dude!
