This game quickly became one of my favorite two player games! I think Targi is still my favorite, but this one was so fun! The puzzle of using the single resource (water) must suit the way my brain works, because I'm 2-0 against my husband.
Radlands is awesome indeed! I didn't find myself enjoying the junking as much as you did, but it's definitely great as an option (and I didn't think about the sneakiness aspect that much). My favorite mechanism probably is the asymmetry with the camps, and we even made up a drafting process at the start that we sometimes use (drafting camps instead of just secretly picking your own). It makes each game and even each player's strategy different and takes the game from a great to an amazing game for me.
Yeah I backed this on kickstarter and glad I did love the over the top components of this game from the ks and I agree I immediately also implemented a drafting system for the bases makes it a bit more strategic.
This has become our go to quick 2p game. The dual use cards are great, and maximizing your water usage is a great puzzle. We're loving it. Plus, Manny Trembley art is always fantastic.
Thanks for sharing your perspective of some of the game. It's always neat to hear designers discuss other designs. I agree with the ones you listed but I think my favorite part is the pick up and go of the game. Everything is right in the box. So you can get a dueling game without worrying about deck building or keeping up with a meta.
Played it for the first time today and got a few games in. Really like it and it’s going to be part of my go-to 2p game rotation. Liked a lot if the mechanisms, including the base (camp?) drafting which I think is particularly smart given there’s a shared deck and so the base drafting serves a threefold purpose of: A) differentiating the setups of the two players, B) allowing them to formulate their own plans of attack, and C) adding a ton of variety (thanks to there being so many different base cards) that would otherwise be severely lacking since the people/event card pool is fairly small.
I’m a huge fan of cards that can be used in multiple ways like this. I have actually been working on a project where I stumbled upon doing a similar system for my cards ( each player has cards with value 1-13 that they use to bid on contracts, these cards represent the assets available to your company) as I was thinking about how players acquire resources to complete contracts In the game’s dynamic economy, I was like “what if they run out of money?” And the solution I went with was selling cards “assets” for their value (1-13) giving players interesting choices as the high cards offer juicy paydays if in a contract but are tempting to sell when strapped for cash. Anyway I just thought it was cool that this game already has a mechanism that I’ve just started to play with. And I really do love the flexibility it gives during play.
Have you played Furnace? It doesn't have the exact same double use for the cards, but it has an interesting bidding system where even if you bid less, you still gain something in return. Maybe you already know it, or it doesn't give you anything new, but wanted to let you know considering I'm always looking for new inspiration myself.
We've been eyeing this game for a while now. My gaming partner and I don't like much confrotation in our games, but we do want to experience some games like that. This one seems fast enough that we won't get to upset over losing or punching the other player in the face (in the game of course lol). And it looks really good to boot. PS: your mic settings were off in this video, Jamey. Very gained up and clipping a little.
Can anyone suggest any games similar to Radlands, i have games like unmatched and summoner wars even dice throne but i want more games like this. I have Deck building games also bit i cant find anything like Radlands for 2 players
@@jameystegmaier hmmm it's hard to pin down, head 2 head but it's not just do dmg do more dmg it's tactical. I also like the 3 lines of cards, the water system and the Event track. Just feels like no other game I have played, we like games like silver bullet too
@@jameystegmaier I have them all apart from Caper and Watergate, Caper has been on my list for some time so I will definitely get that next, Watergate I hear so many good things about but the theme worries me, I have no knowledge of the subject matter being British and worry that I may need to know or understand what is going on. I have been tempted to buy it several times but each time that gets in the way

I was impressed by just how many camps there are in the game.

The event is also a big fun mechanism in the game and that moment to boost 2 raids in a row to end the game is so satisfying.

I can help with some recommendations; can you highlight which part of Radlands you're looking for in another game?
