About Mo Ran's origins: there are subtle hints but they are so subtle that you don't really pay any particular attention to them until after the reveal and you're reading it the second time. 1. MR being described extremely beautiful. Only characters being described such are of Butterfly beauty clan 2. He formed a spiritual core within a year which was a rare accomplishment. His spiritual aura is something that's described rare and stronger than anyone's else by multiple characters. Even Chu Wanning tells it at one point I think. 3. The purple in his eyes. No other "human" characters eyes are ever described to have any such supernatural color. We all thought at that time that this is just part of hyping up the protagonist. These are the only ones I can remember at the moment. I think it was Meatbun's plan from the start because Mo Ran is not an entirely direct descendant of the demon clan not like Hua Binan or Shi Mei or Song Qiutong anyway. He has some blood. He didn't have tears of gold anyway like other such characters. Meatbun does this a lot like there are such subtle hints scattered throughout the novel about Chu Wanning's origins too which I think Meatbun is also teasing us. Like on so many Mo Ran calls Chu Wanning made of wood who catches fire at the slightest spark etc they don't really register at first as something with deeper meaning because I think this is what her plan was from the start.
i think CWN being a piece of heavenly wood clicked for me because he defeated 0.5 chess formation with Guqin without spiritual energy and Mo ran constantly say he smell like flowers. For Mo ran lineage was rather plot armour-ish, he can revive because he's of demon descendence(im willing to let that go because i want them to be together). But noted on his beauty, why was he the only one mentioned with no apparent Butterfly beauty set's qualities other than his purple eyes. Other than his wind(Rufeng Sect) sect blood and holy weapon/s, im not sure how he becomes so powerful.
I realize I totally forgot to send this reply long time ago! To answer your question about that one thing you felt came out of the blue: there are a few hints actually! I haven't read the English translation, only the original Chinese, but I know there are several things that must have been lost in translation because there are several nuances in this type of novel (unless there are a bunch of reader notes), you really need to be familiar with old Chinese traditions and history. Remember in the very beginning (around ch 30-40) when they go to get their weapons and MoRan melts the ice? The dragon asks if he's a celestial or a ghost/demon because he doesn't feel like a human. I believe that's the first hint. And then there are a few later as well. At first I didn't think about it because the dragon starts commenting about seeing two souls, so I was more focused on that, but after finishing I think they might have been 2 separate things.
Aah I see, I think then it just needed a bit more foreshadowing! E.g say when MR went to the afterlife, the ghost at the gate was like "why are you here this place isnt for you?" But then MR gets in the same way 🤔 just so then we can all be like AHHH THAT'S WHY 😩 good though that no matter how subtle there were some in there

I think it's more of a Western thing about the whole heaven and hell thing. Everyone ends up in the Underworld, doesn't matter if you're good, evil, human, demon, ghost, celestial, etc etc. Everyone ends up at the Yellow Spring, cross the Naihe bridge and drink the soup of Oblivion. Also the lord of the Underworld and those who "work" there aren't evil either. I'm not saying there aren't punishment and torture, there is (18 levels of Hell).

The indication of mo ran being a butterfly beauty is his mother and her sister who had outstanding beauty(every character who was described like that turn out to be a butterfly beauty ecept mu yenly). This at least what i think it was. Also the fact that he still had his memories of the past life (pretty sure this is the explanation.... like, his past souls flew to the past him because of his stubborness and carry his memories. He was able to go back to his body with his 6 souls at the end because of his stubborness) and i guess that the era of him getting into the underworld would have something right?
2ha is such a great novel, it dabbled with so many genre and never feels forced, the good translation really packs a punch, we genuinely cry loads over ranwan , nangong si ಥ‿ಥ Xue meng's parents ....urggggghhh we really choose violence on our mental health with this read didn't we?
And here I thought I was the only traumatized one who lost days of sleep due to the pain of a fictional character like I was actually scared to read further when mo ran was ( you know what) and Wanning was lost right before the climax , I dropped the novel and it took me months and a lots of persuasion from fellow reader to read further ... aaaah meatbun ..😢😢

year later reply but I'm late to the party and just finished reading last week.. my plot hole question - Bugui. The one that showed up at the auction and came from some antient burial. It was MoRan's Bugui. It responded to him when he reached out to it later at the inn, and it had a reaction being forced to harm its master - but ...how was it Bugui? It was aged ( or did they alter it somehow so it appeared to be?? ) so that only part of its name was even visible. A holy weapon seems to become a part of its master once it accepts one, but they can stay tangible since, MoRan summoned Jugui and fell asleep with it resting on himself. Does that mean they barrowed Bugui from TianXian jun?? he was a chess piece. I guess they could just command him to hand it over. Basically my brain has been stuck on wondering if there were two Bugui or if they managed to seperate the Emperor from his sword so they could use it for the auction ( trying to lure out MoRan? probably) and the summoning portals. MoRan 2.5 can summon Bugui at the end ( fairly sure he has it in one of the extras when Tianxian jun is in control ) and I thought it would have gone with the Emperor's body in the other world.. so I have no idea. 1. Shizun. All the hugs. So many times the reactions, the thoughts it was very much a ah... I know that feeling. Ive heard that voice in my head. Kitty needs cuddles it will be ok. 2. Great scenes: - alot of bed activites, alot of angsty, xue meng's mum is actually awesome, drunk xue meng and mei hanxue bros are pretty wholesome, xue meng's dad is not what he seems...list could've go on :)
Read carefully the arcs related to Rufeng sect and Nagong Si and it's revealed she's indeed a female but brought up as a male by Nagong Liu and doing all sorts of work men do and
