Thank you for the info and method, Bud. With the reveal of new Gears of War E-Day trailer in Xbox Showcase last weekend, the interest in the classics games has grown. If it's possible, can you please make a vid of how to install using PortProton?
Why do you need to use PortProton?
@@GrownUpGamingGUG Because i save a lot of disk space using it, since i can use only one prefix for all my non-steam games, instead of get one prefix per non-steam game.
If you use lutris you can also put everything in one prefix folder if you want.
1 of my all time favorite games, the 2006 PC port is so much better than the inferior and buggy "Ultimate Edition" they released which is on Game Pass.

Does this somehow work with Lost Planet: Colonies Edition aswell? It used gfwl service also and i would LOVE to relive the joy this game gave my younger self!
Haven't tried, you should try it, just make the game run in the same prefix folder with all the dependencies installed already.
@@GrownUpGamingGUG i don't know if i have the time this weekend, but i will try that out! The files, can i just extract them from the dvd or do i have to install the game on a different computer first and transfer them over to the deck? How do i know, which dependencies i need?
Apparently....don't quote me but there doing a gears of war remastered 1,2 and 3 soon. Been in the works for awhile now tho

I followed all the steps installed everything and when I launch the game I get the warning that my system requirements are too low do you want to continue, I press yes and then black screen with 1 FPS any advice?
the message only prompts when it's the first time running the game. won't have that afterwards. i'm not sure why you have black screen with 1 fps, mine boots fine.

Too bad there's not a pc port for gears 2 or 3. Hopefully emulators improve and make them playable.

Hello. I'm stuck on Step 8. I right clicked on the gearsofwar2006 folder to open terminal and the folder name is missing. Trying to see what I did wrong
Not sure about that, it was pretty straightforward for me. Maybe retry the whole process and make sure all the steps are done.
I just finished the tutorial and when i press the play button, i see blue wallpaper with gears logo but no hardware requirements button and the game crashes...
Oh so close then. I never had that. Could it be the game files? Maybe try it again from scratch first. Else try getting another game file.

Are you taking about this ruclips.net/video/_DX15T3X8tA/видео.htmlsi=LVkTXNA1opIKmBsj I haven't tried it again but I think the process is easier now since the Mesa drivers has been updated many times since the video so it might just support this game without needing to manually install those drivers.

Man i followed it to a T! But only thing is every time I click “play” before and after I follow all steps in steam it brings up a GoW window to install. Doesnt actually play or do anything even after i let it install. Big sad face. Idk why.

Game folder wasn’t good. Found another and each step was the same until the end this time. Error is C++ runtime library. Wargame-g4wlive.exe abnormal programs termination. Press ok to run wine debugger. Nothing happens 😢

That managed to connect after a while. All done. When I launch game I get black screen. Nothing loads not even box to say hardware not compatible
Did you put the gfwl.exe in the dl directory? If the file is not there then it will try to download but the server is down so it keeps trying.
Where do I download the game from please?
i have the disc. not sure where else you can buy it.

I...don't understand. I followed your steps to a T. And it worked...the first time I launched it. Any time after that it just hangs after the splash screen.
Did you change the settings, if you turn on the directx setting at the bottom it will make the game unbootable.

@@GrownUpGamingGUG it’s installedon a HDD I have connected via the dock. Maybe I should install/copy it to the SD?
Nah I was thinking maybe it's on SD and it couldn't write the save data.

Just play around with it. Update the bios, set the vram to auto. I wouldn't recommend using AMD drivers yet, just update the drivers from Lenovo first and play some games.

What's d drive? Is it SD card?
@@GrownUpGamingGUG no D drive is my internal memory drive, I have other games saved there, it’s where I chose the gears directory to be
Edit: just checked, yeah it is internal memory, I might have to redo the process, not sure why it’s on my internal memory 😂
Deleted everything, then followed your video again and even put all the files in the same position as the ones in your video but ended up with the same error (apart from the drive was z this time). Not sure why it won’t work for me
Maybe the games files source is bad?

How do you get the game on steam deck?
I have the pc version, installed it on pc and transferred the game folder to steam deck.

The prerequisite is you need to have the game and it's on your steam deck. If you don't have those then this video won't magically put the game on your steam deck.
Hello; thanks for the write up and video. I have an original copy of the game which I have installed and extracted the Gears of War folder from, but when I run the startup.exe file the first time, I see you get the Gears of War Startup.exe Splash screen (at 4:46), i'm not getting the Gears of War Splash screen; it says something about not having the DVD. I don't really have any more options, so I go to the next steps and run the script, which then fails after a little bit with this error:

Then if I try to set up that file structure myself and add a blank default.htm, it gets to the end, where it tries to install Games for Windows Live, and I got through the rest of the steps, which seem ok, but when I try to run the game the first time, I get an error saying "Please insert the correct DVD-ROM, click OK and restart the application"
What could I be doing wrong? Thanks for any help!
You may need a patch but I can't give you any links.
@@GrownUpGamingGUG I've also tried with the No-CD patched Startup.exe. But oddly enough, it's still asking for a DVD. I know the No-CD patch works as well, as I've tested with a standard windows install.
I'm trying to run the script against it again, but still seem to get the missing default.htm file error.

@@PepsiDog No; tried a few other things. Tried installing it using WINE, but can't get it to work with the No-CD patch. Also tried to clear it out again from scratch, but still get the same error. Tried also running the patches against it after running the install, but that doesn't work. Not sure where the issue is
