Just an anecdote - been on blood pressure med for about a decade. Started taking TMG and a multivitamin with methylated forms of several of them about 2 months ago. I have had to cut my BP med in half because I checked my BP after feeling very sluggish and it was 110/69 when it’s typically 135/85 while on meds. Have cut it in half for 4 days and it’s still perfect so it’s possible I get off the med completely in the near future. It’s the real deal for the right people. Great topic, Tom!

@@synthclub yeah could be, although I don’t think you can actually know that - they are sort of synergistic in that you’re adding the ability to methylate so it’s possible the TMG would’ve had an effect on its own but who knows. There are studies clearly showing TMG lowering homocysteine which can have a lowering effect on the BP so it’s possible either one alone can have this effect and both together are better. I haven’t seen any studies on methylated B vitamins, but have done the research on TMG and it clearly has the potential, alone, to lower BP. Either way, I’m happy with it.

Betaine Anhydrous not HCL. Thomas says at the end 2.5-10 grams a day. Advice I’ve seen from years ago was at least 1.25-1.5g pre AND post workout if gains is the only reason you’re gonna take it
So TMG isn't best taken first thing in the morning? With a meal or on an empty stomach? Can it be taken in a post-workout protein shake? Would it affect sleep?
Okay, but TMG has methyl groups restored by choline or lecithin (which has 3 such), a cheap supplement, or alpha-GPC if you want methyl groups without the attached fatty acids. Plus, the choline doubled as a vital cell membrane component which is important for brain health.
Might want to add in that betaine is a choline metabolite, thus tmg should help preserve choline. Alpha gpc and citi-choline are likely made more available as they won't be converted to betaine. Also creatine works with methylation as well, thus stacking all three likley magnify the methylation pool. Finakly, Taurine increases betaine's effetiveness by restoring bhmt activity that downregulates as you increase betaine supplementation.
Look up taurine restore bhmt activity. A lot of things down regulate via feedback. If more homocysteine goes down the transulfuration pathway, then we could see increased taurine being formed. It makes sense to balance, thus once taurine hits a high enough threshold, bhmt would turn up activity to restore methione recycleing via betaine(tmg) and folate. Im not positive this is why, but the feedback from taurine would make sense. The down side is that this could mean less glutathione because homocysteine wont be taken down the transulfuration pathway.
@@alexzbiciak I think a simpler way of saying it is that Taurine supplementation inhibits homocysteine conversion to cysteine... thus creating an excess in homocysteine which will /necessarily/ lead to higher activation of BHMT and MTR... It is the excess of homocysteine which creates the increase in activity and personally I don't really want to increase my homocysteine levels just to activate higher conversion from homocysteine, that doesn't make sense to me. If people want to increase taurine and glutathione and conversion of homocysteine to methionine then I would recommend focussing on consuming cofactors for enzymes along those pathways and not to supplement end products like taurine, but that is just my opinion.
Like he said the TMG has three methyl groups attached to the amino. The methionine cycle's main feature is the recycling of homocysteine back into SAMe. Since SAMe is the primary methyl donor in numerous biochemical processes in the body, it is critically important that the methionine cycle functions properly. If the methionine cycle is dysfunctional, methylation becomes inhibited and homocysteine levels may increase.
I haven't noticed any remarkable change, but then again, I follow just about every workout with shrimp already. My homocysteine is also high, even though I take "homocysteine resist."
@@craciunalex3753all you guys have to do is google it. I looked up “does Betaine Anhydrous (TMH)!come from beets?”. It didn’t say anything about it coming from beets. Then I searched, “does Betaine HCL come from beets”. It definitely does. Funny thing is, it’s also not even very close to the same thing as TMG. With that said, I think Thomas made a mistake mentioning beets here because that comes from Betaine HCL. Which has much different benefits and results. TMG is the one you want for the benefits described in the video.
Hcl is for digestion. I've taken it before and it gave me way to much stomach acid. Hcl is for older people or people with low stomach acid. Helps with digestion.
For those interested in the natural food source option.... A typical supplement dose is 750mg to 3g. Here are the top food sources and amounts you get. Wheat bran (1,339mg per 100g serving) Wheat germ (1,241mg per 100g serving) Spinach (600mg per 100g serving) Quinoa (390mg per 100g serving)
Not sure if you will see this since its been awhile, but It tried this for a few weeks and decided to stop after two blood test. I had been taking this for 2 weeks prior to a blood test and my AST and ALT levels were off the charts, talking 4-5x higher than the max range. To be fair I had taken it 2-3 hrs before the blood test, but still surprising results. My doctor was shocked and wanted a re-test. 2nd time around I didn't take TMG prior to blood test and was well within the normal range. I quit it completely after.
Makes sense. As we get older stem cells increasingly become adipocytes instead of normal proteins. Part of this is dysfunction in estrogen receptors via the sympathetic nervous system. Part of it could also be methylation issues.
Fantastic video, Thomas has always. Can you take TMG every day or just on a training day. Can it be taken with l-arginine or on its own. How long should you take TMG for.
Homocysteine is strongly associated with autism, i'd be curious to see a study done on pregnant mothers given TMG and pregnant mothers given a placebo and have the mental health outcomes of the children monitored
Thomas, im looking at supps, whats the diff between betaine hcl and tmg betaine? Are they more or less interchangeable? The hcl one is easy to source, having hard time finding the other one. Thx.
TMG. Do not confuse w Betaine HCL... I wish people talking about this supplement would never use the word "betaine" even if it is chemically accurate, it will confuse people.
TMG donating methyl groups is crucial for the epigenetic changes the body's cells must undergo in order to build muscle or shift from an overweight fat accumulating metabolism to a fat burning lean metabolism. Cells use a sort of lock-out, tag-out process (for those familiar with heavy equipment maintenance) that literally locks out genes to remain inactive and the methyl groups physically serves this purpose. Anytime we change gene expressions at a large scale we need to supply enough methyl groups or it will bottleneck. Our baseline also drops with age but any heavy revamping at most ages would likely beniffit from supplementation.
I am also Homozygous, C677T. I haven't been aware how this may help. Can you point me in the direction of that information? I already take a Methyl-Folate.
@@landdesigner4195I came across it first from Gary Brekka - Google him. I did the gene test and was missing MTHFR from both parents- it took 2 full months of taking the TMG and their methylated multivitamin blend but I just halved my blood pressure medicine I’ve been on for 10 years because I had a day where I felt super sluggish - checked my BP and it was 110/68 - normally, while on meds, it’s 135/85. Halved it 4 days ago and BP is 115/70 so I suspect I’ll be able to get off of it in the next few weeks. My diet and activity has been pretty dialed in for years and haven’t done anything differently there so it’s def the TMG+methyl-vits. I’m not associated with Brekka at all but don’t mind recommending since the results speak for themselves.
@@landdesigner4195 people with the MTHFR mutations tend to have higher homocysteine levels. It will help lower them, of course, as Thomas says. I've been taking it for several years, my homocysteine levels are always on the lower side. Homocysteine is necessary for the production of glutathione, so it is possible for it to go too low. I would say get it tested. You don't want your level to go below 6.
@@landdesigner4195L-methylfolate is the preferred methyl donor for homocysteine metabolism, so if you’re already taking L-methylfolate (especially 15mg daily), TMG probably won’t do much extra for homocysteine metabolism specifically.
Why not take 750 - 1000 mg of niacin instead that way you don't have to give up a methyl group? Niacin dramatically increases NAD+ two fold on 1,000 mg daily doses.
It’s also supposed to lower blood pressure , which means dilated blood vessels increased blood flow to and away from muscles to increase gains and recovery
Did you see in the comments where this guy said he started taking TMG and he was able to go off his blood pressure medicine. It's also supposed to help with gut issues. Very interesting I'm going to order some.
If your worried about BP, try Nattokinase. lowered mine so I suggested it to a lady friend with high blood pressure. Meds were not working, Nattokinase did.
Thomas I‘am on the same boat like you to improve my gut health this year. Hope you find some good new research and proof about that which will help us to get a healthier gut.
When I was in basic training, I had a big pile of Spinach with every meal and the weight melted off. And before anyone says it was because of all the training, most of my weight loss was when I had a stress fracture in my left leg and was in recovery. So when I wasn't crutching to the chow hall, cleaning, sleeping, and doing pull ups, I was sitting around playing board games and watching movies on the weekend. And the breakfast was not what I'd consider healthy. Every morning it was stuff like French toast, waffles, hashbrowns, peanut butter and jelly. It was like starting everyday with a cheat meal.
This caused horrible stomach upset after a couple of weeks. It's also used to increase stomach acid which it seemed to do as antacids controlled the pain.
thx for the links on research. now im 64.4 kg, 185cm, lean and mascular, little fat on the belly. bought betain for 2 months, wiil share the results)(will try, if not forgoten)
It’s funny because most of them I already have or it’s in another supplement I take, so I go home after watching his videos and take them right away lol
If one is taking Taurine, not sure you will need TMG as far as longevity/homocysteine is concerned? As Taurine is shown to reduce methionine, which may be part of the reason Taurine is so effective.
Have you taken both? I made the mistake of starting taurine, tmg and a methylated multivitamin all at the same time. It made me paranoid, anxious, irritable, irrational, and moody. I felt like I was going nuts. Not sure what was the culprit. I have normal mthfr but mutations on MTR & MTRR. I was hoping the tmg would boost my available methianone for my follicles as I'm early to gray.
Taurine requires cysteine for synthesis and it can source that amino from homocysteine but if the levels of methionine are reduced then the levels of SAMe are reduced and that creates an inhibitory effect on the enzyme CBS which is making the conversion from homocysteine to cysteine (for taurine). TMG provides methyl groups to homocysteine to convert it back into methionine which is a methyl donor to SAMe which is the body's primary methyl donor. So... I don't think the relationship is like you think it is.
@@shoes121255 Excess methyl groups can ultimately create an abundance of adrenaline. So it may be best to choose how you want to tackle the issue of homocysteine. You can supplement with methylated B vitamins for better conversion of homocysteine to methionine. You can supplement with choline or betaine for this conversion too. Or you can focus on converting homocysteine to cysteine in the transulfuration pathway which leads to the creation of taurine or glutathione, you can do that by focussing on cofactors for enzymes. Supplementing with taurine reduces your need for cysteine which will inhibit homocysteine conversion to cysteine in the transulfuration pathway. Like I said above, supplementing with methyl groups creates an abundance of SAMe which can create an abundance of adrenaline. It is recommended that people with bipolar do not supplement with SAMe because of this reason. Best to take it easy and try one at a time.
TMG lowers blood pressure. Many people will need to have their prescribing physician adjust their medication(s). Some have to come off heart medications. If your body is happy with a lower blood pressure this is good. Your arteries are stronger ( they are muscles in your arteries) & healthier. This can be seen in your skeletal muscle growth.
TMG fixed my BP. Was 153/90 with meds and now 130/80 with just TMG. Guessing i have the MTHFR gene mutation that cant process histamine and causing inflamtion in the arteries. TMG fixed all that.
I have high blood pressure and just found out I have mthfr mutations that limit processing of homocysteine ... Can I ask what dose are you taking to get your results?
@mikloscampbell927 it was 1g in the morning and 0.5g at night and measured at 4 and 10 weeks. I've just started a high potency b9, & b12 each day and a b6 every 2 days .....lowered TMG to 750mg TMG. The brand is pro health as its 3rd party tested. Steer clear if rebranded chinese lab stuff.
I've been taking 3-4 grams of TMG a day for a month. I definitely have more energy throughout the day, no more after lunch crash, and still able to sleep very well. I have noticed I am leaner, my muscles look more full, and even after a week on vacation, I came back still looking full, not flat like before when I haven't eaten enough or been sick and no gym(I'm natty, looking flat is a struggle😅). My arms always look very full since taking TMG, and my compression shirts are looser around my waist, and tighter around my chest and arms.
@@ladye2818 I dropped it down to 2 grams a day before bed. It made me feel sluggish and very relaxed, much like the effect of taurine. I stopped taking it pre workout and I noticed I am not yawning at the gym lol
Zonulin does not restore gut barrier integrity it unfortunately does the opposite and increases gut barrier permeability. Main causes of increased zonulin are detrimental gut bacteria and gliadin (a protein from wheat). Honestly great video otherwise, I am a health professional and one of the very few doctors routinely checking homocysteine levels so very familiar with that side of the discussion, using this to support methylation, etc., but the muscle gains and fat loss with TMG is new to me and very interesting. If TMG increases zonulin, however, that may in fact be a downside.
Thomas mentioned both TLR4 and zonulin, then spoke to the point of gut permeability. You seem to have focused only on zonullin without considering TLR4. When you reduce TLR4 expression (and therefore inflammation), the gut environment becomes less prone to damage. At the same time, modulating zonulin ensures that the tight junctions are functioning properly. Together, less inflammation and better regulation of tight junctions could synergistically improve gut barrier integrity.
You also should talk about side effects. For example, this TMG increases methionine, which causes fluid buildup in the brain, as well as higher LDL levels...
I have taken this for years, for mostly longevity, speaking of, you could also speak about phosphatidic acid, it does seem to help with muscle building and is also very healthy too. Best
rimethylglycine supplementation may cause diarrhea, bloating, cramps, dyspepsia, nausea or vomiting.[23] Although rare, it can also causes excessive increases in serum methionine concentrations in the brain, which may lead to cerebral edema, a life-threatening condition.[23] Trimethylglycine supplementation lowers homocysteine but also raises LDL-cholesterol in obese individuals and renal patients.[24]

At 59 years old, I’m seeing muscle increase in my first week of starting TMG.
What are you using?

Started supplementing for 2 weeks now. With creatine and hmb looking to get some big gains next couple of months.
A couple months have passed. What's the progress?

Okay, but TMG has methyl groups restored by choline or lecithin (which has 3 such), a cheap supplement, or alpha-GPC if you want methyl groups without the attached fatty acids. Plus, the choline doubled as a vital cell membrane component which is important for brain health.
Tmg is legit. Def keeping it in my supp stack. Seems to help my energy levels
Where do you get it from?
do you take it in the morning or can you have it at night time or does it keep you awake?
Might want to add in that betaine is a choline metabolite, thus tmg should help preserve choline. Alpha gpc and citi-choline are likely made more available as they won't be converted to betaine.
Also creatine works with methylation as well, thus stacking all three likley magnify the methylation pool.
Finakly, Taurine increases betaine's effetiveness by restoring bhmt activity that downregulates as you increase betaine supplementation.
Help me out here are you saying that TGM supplementation down regulates bhmt and that Taurine is a way to "buffer" this effect?
The ammount of lay person information on BHMT mutations and therapies feels very limted to me.
Great information, thank you
Polish shredded beats with horseradish is delicious. Highly recommend with mashed potatoes, meatballs with gravy and in general as a side
Thanks Thomas - good information. I take 2 grms of TMG along with 2 grms of NMM
What is the expected benefits of taking TMG vs. pure Glycine ??
Like he said the TMG has three methyl groups attached to the amino. The methionine cycle's main feature is the recycling of homocysteine back into SAMe. Since SAMe is the primary methyl donor in numerous biochemical processes in the body, it is critically important that the methionine cycle functions properly. If the methionine cycle is dysfunctional, methylation
becomes inhibited and homocysteine levels may increase.
I haven't noticed any remarkable change, but then again, I follow just about every workout with shrimp already. My homocysteine is also high, even though I take "homocysteine resist."
What is the difference between TMG (Betaine Anhydrous) & Betaine HCL? Which is the preferred supplement?
Lookig for the answer also
@@craciunalex3753all you guys have to do is google it.
It also works wonders for lowering blood pressure.
Anyone who has high BP should take it.

Thanks Thomas....you are awesome and just listening to you I feel great!

Interesting idea, Dr. Mengele.
I think that there has been some research that taking Methylated B Vits helps if you've got an Autism Spectrum
Thomas, im looking at supps, whats the diff between betaine hcl and tmg betaine? Are they more or less interchangeable? The hcl one is easy to source, having hard time finding the other one. Thx.
tmg betaine is the one you want , the HCL is for digestion.
Great, I’m a homozygous mthfr and now my TMG supplement price is going to skyrocket. Thanks!
Yup.
Do you recommend a certain supplement?
Why not take 750 - 1000 mg of niacin instead that way you don't have to give up a methyl group? Niacin dramatically increases NAD+ two fold on 1,000 mg daily doses.

Absolutely not. Compeletely different.

Is there a better time to take TMG? Before a workout? Daily any time? Great info.
Everyone reacts differently. TMG can cause insomnia so best to start low and take in the morning, possibly lunch. Yes, usually good pre workout.
Thomas working over time for us.
Does TMG need to be taken with a B-Complex vitamin? And do you only take it before a workout, or everyday?
This caused horrible stomach upset after a couple of weeks. It's also used to increase stomach acid which it seemed to do as antacids controlled the pain.
Rather than taking antiacids did you try decreasing the T.M.G due to the stomach?!

My body is not a fan of supplements besides adaptogens, i mainly keep it natural.
Too true. I have my favorite tried and true stuff, but yeah I agree, this is getting ridiculous.

What is the daily suggested dose of this supplement? I must have missed it in the video.

Dude your shirt is amazing!
TMG fixed my BP. Was 153/90 with meds and now 130/80 with just TMG. Guessing i have the MTHFR gene mutation that cant process histamine and causing inflamtion in the arteries. TMG fixed all that.

Can you stack TMG with HMB and get better results?
I've been taking 3-4 grams of TMG a day for a month. I definitely have more energy throughout the day, no more after lunch crash, and still able to sleep very well.
I have noticed I am leaner, my muscles look more full, and even after a week on vacation, I came back still looking full, not flat like before when I haven't eaten enough or been sick and no gym(I'm natty, looking flat is a struggle😅). My arms always look very full since taking TMG, and my compression shirts are looser around my waist, and tighter around my chest and arms.
3-4 grams on an empty stomach first thing in the morning, or 3-4 grams with breakfast?

High LDL is nothing to worry about.
Where did you hear about fluid build up in the brain from TMG supplementation? I tried to look this up but found nothing.
