  • Join Brad and Pastor Rocky Stone in this reflection on the earlier episode where Brad dove into the Greek word agape and its use in English and ancient Greek. Filled with some great humor and pastoral insights into this question, you won’t want to miss this episode.
    Episode Highlights:
We have talked about this wrong…and that’s OK: In reflecting on the disconnect between the English usage of this word and the ancient Greek meaning and usage, Pastor Rocky notes that we can and should acknowledge that our discussion of this word in the Church has been mistaken. Nevertheless, he notes that we don’t need to feel bad for being misinformed on this question as we were largely speaking appropriately given the inaccurate information we had.
The Inadequacy of Language: Pastor Rocky highlights that often times are words are insufficient to fully express what we want to express. The word love is a perfect example where when we tell a husband tells his wife he loves her, it doesn’t feel adequate. Similarly, much of our language about God feels limited and stilted. Therefore, in expressions of love related to God, it is little wonder that our language feels inadequate and we grasp for a term that is not actually there.
Moving Forward: In terms of how we move forward, Pastor Rocky calls for broader awareness in the Christian community about the limits of retrojecting our use of agape in English back onto the ancient Greek usage that we see in the Bible. Having said that, there is no need to stop using the term agape in English as long as we are of the disconnect and don’t try to make it do more than it can.
Why Watch? If you are a fan of CS Lewis or have ever heard a pastor talking about agape love, this episode is for you. While the main episode on this topic covered the main issues, this episode considers where we go from here.

Exactly, but it is a shadow, and that will do for now.
