The obelisks on the rooftop aren't just decoration. They're there because the whole rooftop is a temple devoted to Gozer and designed by the insane, misanthropic, apocalyptic doctor/architect/cult leader Ivo Shandor. Ray explains to Venkman (and us) that the whole building was built to concentrate supernatural energy. If you play the plot straight then it's a cosmic horror story, of the sort that HP Lovecraft wrote. And yes; the film was a massive hit when it was released!

There was a sort of comedy pipeline back then, in the 70s and 80s. A lot of these guys, Harold Ramis and Bill Murray and others, came up through smaller comedy troupes, writing and performing, making comedy records, writing for the National Lampoon, and making Saturday Night Live (back when it was original and funny) and SCTV.
Making Venkman kind of a sleazeball to begin with shows they were more fearless with comedy back then. Now Hollywood has a sort of scriptwriting bible that says that the hero must "save the cat" at the beginning of the movie so you know that he's the good guy and you should root for him, which goes against everything we know about how comedy works. The author of this Hollywood guidebook afaik wrote only a couple of screenplays himself and both bombed.
Hollywood wants to believe in these guidelines just the same, because they're playing it safe. That's why everything now is a remake or a reboot. You consume product and get excited for next product.

33:55: There is indeed. Would you like to know? There is a lot TO know.
Short version: I was the last student of John DeCuir, the guy who designed the set, when I was a film student at AFI (class of 2010). It's deep occult Hollywood, but, basically a true story. Dan Aykroyd knows his paranormal lore very well.
Gozer's gate is an "illuminated pyramid". Think of the Third Eye. There's a lot of Masonry in there as well. Both Aykroyd and myself are Masons and know that side of things too. Dana is the Scarlett Woman of Hollywood ritual, and much more.

Great reaction! I remember this is one of the major films my older brother rented on VHS it took a good year + for films to come to home video (Which is surreal now) For 1984 it’s a interesting mash-up of Horror & comedy (Very dark) with characters actually smoking, the tone balances from silly comedy to very interesting horror (Ghostbusters II was watered down just like TMNT II) Once merchandise, toys, cartoons & cereal came into play it effected the sequel a lot (But, Ghostbusters II is very underrated) the unsung heroes of this film are Harold Ramis, Ernie Hudson, Rick Moranis, & Annie Potts (Next time anyone watches this film pay attention to each one of those (4) they are without a doubt pulling a Larry Fine 👍👍👍 The only real negative surrounding the film is the plagiarism of “I want a New Drug” it’s crazy a big Hollywood studio didn’t clear the song or catch that the melody was very familiar

It’s available on Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, and a slightly more cartoony version on the Wii
It’s one of the few licensed games that doesn’t suck, you actually suit up as a ‘rookie’ and bust ghosts with the crew

The OG Ghostbusters games were in late 1984. You were a little pixilated guy with a proton pack at the bottom of the screen and you had to capture Slimer. If you missed and didn't get him in the trap he'd fly off, come back and knock you over and leave as your character said, "He slimed me.". "Ghostbusters" was definitely a hit immediately. Movies didn't open on as many screens back then, so if you lived in a small town like me, it was a month or two before a movie got to a theater near you. so you had the hype for a while before you could see it. Thankfully, by 1984, it was only a month or two. The first "Star Wars" movie took 6 months to finally play in my town.
The song was also an instant hit, and helped build up anticipation. It might take a couple of months to get to see a movie, but songs were released worldwide pretty much instantly, and in the early days of music videos, the studio got free advertising every time the video played on TV!
I had a friend who was obsessed with "Ghostbusters". I think he saw it five times in the theater, and during one of his viewings, he smuggled a small cassette recorder into the theater, and recorded the audio of the movie - along with the audience's reaction, of course. It was often six months to a year before movies were released on video cassettes, and even then, they weren't priced to own, so the audio recording held my friend over until he was able to tape it off of cable TV a couple of years later.

I've lost touch with the friend who recorded the movie's audio on cassettes, but I doubt he would still have them. It would be kinda cool to hear them close to 40 years later. But I'm sure people reacted to the movie the same way they would today. The movie is rather timeless. Maybe the visual effects have aged a bit, and maybe Venkman's (Murray's) horndog act is viewed a little bit like a stalker today (we didn't even have a word for it back then). But the rest of it holds up.

-If you go to NYC, you can see the real Ghostbusters; firehouse used for the exterior shots. It's still a working firehouse. The interior was filmed at a different firehouse in LA.
-Dan Aykroyd, who has long had an interest in the occult, first came up with the idea. His first screenplay was a lot more complicated. It took place in the future and involved a small ghost extermination business competing with larger, more successful businesses. The paired him up with Harold Ramis, who made the screenplay much simpler.
-Winston was originally supposed to be played by Eddie Murphy, who was a HUGE star at the time. When Ernie Hudson (just an unknown working actor) was cast instead, his role ended up getting progressively smaller in rewrites, until he didn't get introduced until halfway through the movie.
If you like Rick Moranis, I suggest "Spaceballs", where he plays a parody of Darth Vader, and the sketch comedy series "SCTV" where he and Davie Thomas play these goofy stereo typically Canadian beer-drinking brothers named Bob and Doug McKenzie.

"...5 bucks... to get shocked over 75 times..."
    Well, let's be reasonable. That'd be almost $15 today! ... ... ...
"...isn't he famous at this point...?"
Maybe? I mean... it depends on how much coverage is out there and how much that guy follows the news. Not everyone is on top of every story.
"...how many cases of ghost sightings have there been..."
You mean instances where these three caused hallucinations via drugs and put on a light show?
"...the fact that he's still thinking they're pulling one over on everyone..."
There's a point there, _but..._ to be fair... when something like this comes up, all the crazies come out. It's New York, well known for their crazies. However the fact that there's suddenly _so many_ of them in a tight, tight cluster (as in hundreds within _hours_ and all across the city) is _either_ a sort of mass hallucination (possible) or something to worry about. The fact that there are several _reputable_ sources (not just random people) helps.
"...comedy movies... don't get made that much anymore..."
The problem is that _every_ movie has become a comedy. There are more jokes per minute in almost _any_ modern movie than there were/are in _intentional_ comedies. As a result, you don't get pure comedies _nearly_ as much because Hollywood has just put all the jokes from them in other movies. I think this started around 2005 with some writer or director saying something to the effect of 'things can be serious, but crack a joke once in a while'. So _now_ movies that are _trying_ to be comedies have to make the jokes _vastly_ better in order to be seen as funny. As a result, they aren't getting made as often, or 'comedy' is mixed in as a descriptor, at best. This degrades the action/horror movies and destroys the comedies.
"...was [the Ghostbusters song] an immediate smash hit?..."
Ghostbusters, the movie, was released on June 8, 1984. The song was released on June 16, 1984 and came in at number 68 in the top 100 in the USA. It hit number 1 on August 11 of that year, and _stayed there_ for three weeks. It got up to number 2 in the UK in September. So... take that how you want.
    Have a nice day!

Shed be better off watching "The Real Ghostbusters" cartoon than Afterlife. At least the cartoon came up with some new ghosts and villains and didnt fallback on memberberries. It failed in the exact opposite way of the reboot... the reboot was dismissive of what came before... Afterlife straight up WORSHIPS it like a fawning faboy and thinks Ghostbusters needed sepia toned sentimentality.

Louis was played by Rick Moranis. He is hilarious and lovely.
Three movies of his you must watch:
Spaceballs: A Star Wars parody by Mel Brooks. He plays the Darth Vader equivalent, Dark Helmet. It's an absolutely bonkers movie.
    Honey, I Shrunk the Kids:
He plays a lovable inventor that accidentally shrinks his kids and their friends to the size of a grain of rice, who then go on an adventure through the back yard, trying to find their way home. Fantastic family film.
Little Shop of Horrors: The best musical ever made. He plays a similar character to Louis - a meek, downtrodden, sweet loser. But his life is turned upside down when he becomes the owner of a sentient, maniacal, carnivorous plant.

In ancient peoples' defense, I've seen people who act genuinely possessed during hormone swings. I'm only half-joking, some people have poor impulse control and chemical changes doesn't help anything. It's fascinating that you brought up pregnancy. People still argue about the science, but most research seems to show slightly higher delivery rates with lower barometric rates, or with storms (pressure again no doubt.)

This is one of the all-time movie classics. I absolutely love the idea of using science to thwart the supernatural. And the idea of exorcists as blue-collar exterminators, basically. This movie is great and original on so many levels.
I really love how the ghost threat escalates from classic, silly, scare-you ghosts up the the level of Lovecraftian, extra-dimensional, universe-destroying horrors.
Also, the reveal of the Stay-Puft Marshmallow man is one of my favorite moments in all of movies. Ray, as the most innocent and child-like member of the team, tries to conjure up the image of something he loves from his childhood that could never hurt anyone. And to see it manifested as a gigantic, building-smashing abomination of pure horror is just brilliant! This movie just rules.

None these young people watching movies have the patience nor attention span to simply allow a movie to play out, thus watching with captions in their native tongue. They continually try to guess/want to know where a story is headed, which is annoying in itself. So the try to guess where the story is headed, also annoying, and they are always wrong. Just shut up with the prognastication and be comfortable enough in your own skin to allow the experience as intended.

If you haven't looked it up I do recommend looking into story of this film. Not only the writing and eventual production, but also I was Sony or rather Columbia pictures at the time before the Sony merger faced a lawsuit over the name. How it became a smash film and then into a successful Saturday morning cartoon( which reignited the court issues that the film had experienced) to the less-than-stellar received sequel despite the fact that the production value and the film itself is actually rather good. The Long March through development hell pledge to a less-than-stellar reboot of the franchise. The failure of which caused Sony to go back to the drawing board and decides to gift directing duties for an actual legacy sequel to the son of Director Ivan Reitman. There is a reason that the legacy of this film has survived for 39 years
