If you guys are confused about how Prince Canute became the successor to the English throne, I think it is better to just read the history of the Anglo-Saxons and The Kingdom of Denmark in the 11th century. Because what is told in the anime is based on a real history. Well simply put, the Danish at that time wanted to rule Britain island, and the Anglo-Saxon (England) king fled to what we know today as France. Because the English throne was vacant after the king fled, King Sweyn of Denmark wanted to put one of his sons to be king of England and put England as part of the Kingdom of Denmark. So yeah, King Sweyn and his two sons Canute and his older brother were Danish. They weren't English😌
they SHOULD NOT read any of that before watching the show because Vinland saga is very heavily based off of true events and a LOT of the plot will be spoiled.
King Sweyn made himself the King of England but he died soon after under mysterious circumstances, and since Cnut was in England at the time he was able to take control of his father's army and declare himself King of England as a subordinate to his brother Harald who became the King of Denmark

But as someone who loves Vinland Saga so much it’s enough for me to know they appreciate this masterpiece and give it a try (at least once in lifetime)
man... showing that shot of Thors right before Askeladd starts talking about the legend of Artorius returning from Avalon to the west... that part absolutely kills me. [SPOILERS AHEAD FOR LATE SEASON 1] basically, it feels like the legend of Artorius, this comforting story that Askeladd's mother told to him in his childhood, might be the last pure thing that Askeladd believes in. but his nihilism runs so deep because he basically assumes that he's too ruined for the legend to have anything to do with him. and Avalon in the legend seems to function so similarly to Vinland... this idea of a peaceful place, untouched by the horrors of the world. a concept that even people who live surrounded by violence can hold in their mind as a comforting ideal. but to Askeladd, he and his men render the world into hell wherever they go... they bring it with them. they are not fit to enter paradise... if they were allowed in, it wouldn't be paradise anymore. but thinking back to the fourth episode, right before Thors died... Askeladd asked him to lead them. and while he played it off as a joke at the time, for a long moment there, he was serious. it was as though he could almost believe that he'd found Artorius, the fabled hero from the legend, standing right in front of him. but his cynicism causes him to betray that last pure belief, and it only hurts worse to see Thors, noble in his death, leaving the world behind with only the wicked left in it. what's really interesting to me, is that Askeladd eventually dies very similarly to Thors. in the same way that Thors was determined to make sure that everyone on his ships lived, as well as everyone in Askeladd's crew... Askeladd is determined to save the people of Wales. and for the sake of that cause... for the protection of the people they really care about... both of these men choose to die. in the end, these are the heroic qualities that define Artorius as a legendary concept. this is how you invoke the image of Artorius. Askeladd had already disqualified himself from such an association a long time ago, and continued to commit crime after crime throughout his life, owing a heavier and heavier debt to karma, and even killing Thors, who could've been the exact legend he'd been hoping for... but in the end, if Askeladd really wants something, then the only option is to genuinely strive for it. this was always true.
I guarantee that Thors commited far more crimes than Askeladd. Thors pillaged villages and took part in mass murders, rapes, theft etc for respect and wealth. Only stopped once he got married and fled
regardless, none of that is mutually exclusive to Askeladd identifying Thors as this archetype at the specific time when he met him. and it isn't mutually exclusive to Thors being a genuinely better person than Askeladd, in terms of their values in the moment, by the time the two end up facing each other. Thors had to develop from the Troll of Jom into a better person... we see him at the end of that process because that's what's relevant to the story. if anything, Thors is living proof that none are beyond the potential for redemption. no, he didn't start this way. my point is that Askeladd wasn't beyond redemption either... he'd just long since given up on trying. and besides that, on a technical level, we don't actually have a complete factual understanding of everything Thors did while in the Jomsviking, one way or another. that group of warriors is simultaneously more ruthless and more principled than Askeladd's pirate crew, but even within their ranks, there's variation when it comes to individual members' level of integrity. Floki orders an assassination on Thors despite their leader legitimately wanting Thors to come back and fight... clearly each person that makes up the Jomsviking interacts with the role in their own way. this isn't to try and spin Thors as more _or_ less noble than he really was... I just think that the story left a lot of the details of his life vague, because they're irrelevant right now. your more gruesome assumptions about his past aren't any more corroborated than a more optimistic person's. we can really only take the narrative at it's word. anything more is conjecture.
Wow thanks for the insight. I knew that Askeladd wanted Thors to lead them because he believed he found that King he's been waiting for but never even thought about why he never saw himself as being worthy of it. Really need to give Season 1 another rewatch.
@@Aceofspades928 honestly, I'm rewatching it now with a friend, and I've been picking up on a lot more details... like, knowing what I know now, there are so many scenes that hit different. like, directly after Thorfinn stows away with them, when they're in the village and Thorfinn is contemplating killing Askeladd in his sleep, it's interesting that Askeladd doesn't make a single move to stop him. this kid is six years old, and Askeladd has no assurances that he won't bring the sword down. he doesn't seem cocky either, like, he's not sneering about how he knew the kid wouldn't do it. or just leaving Thorfinn alive initially in general... we watch Askeladd's crew destroy this village so thoroughly, killing everyone, and only after that do we get the scene of Thorfinn with the sword. Askeladd could absolutely kill him. he has no qualms about mass slaughter, doesn't blink at killing or orphaning children, will burn people's homes to the ground and take all of their stuff, but he doesn't kill Thorfinn. I think in some ways, he kind of knows he deserves to be haunted. he won't let himself just die... but he's going to live with a constant shadow over him. it's so much more noticeable once you've seen everything.
To enjoy the most out of Winland Saga, you need a basic knowledge of the history of Britain and its neighbors. And did you notice? So Askeladd is related to Welsh and is also related to the famous Arthurian legend. Ah, this is where the story gets more and more interesting! Enjoy!! *King Sweyn and Prince Canute are Danish royalty. England at that time was not yet entirely ruled by a single royal family. The Danish royal family wants to invade England and become King of England. England has already almost lost the war. So King Sweyn becomes the ruler of England.

boring means dull... so i suppose something interesting can't be boring at the same time. i do get what brigg meant though. ☺️ hmm. vinland saga isn't always going to be action-packed. i love the fighting scenes but what makes this story epic lies in the story-telling, combined with the dialogues, historical references, and the tension that comes from the "slowness" and "quieter" scenes. at least that's what it is for me. ☺️
OMG. the story is based off of true history to the point that many characters, battles, and events really happened. Thorkell wants the prince because whoever has him has leverage over Denmark, and Thorkell wants to fight Denmark but they retreated and he wants the biggest fight possible so he'll use Canute to become their main priority. England has a king current and his name is Edmund. King Sweyn is the king of Denmark and his sons are Canute and Harold. forget about the other Harold that's the king of Norway he is irrelevant to the story.

Alright to summarize it. King Sweyn, Canute’s father, is the King of Denmark-Norway and he wants to conquer England. If and when Sweyn dies, his lands would be inherited by his sons. Doesn't take as long as you'd think on foot. The march from london to where they cross would have only been about 5-6 days. You history is correct, but also incorrect. If we take this story at face value with the known characters involved in England. Then Canute (Cnut) was born in 990. That would mean it is currently... I guess 1005-1010ish (I'm assuming Canute is somewhere between 15-20). England DID have a unified king by this point, the first was Aethlestan who was King from 924-927. Depending on when exactly this is all taking place in terms of specific months/years. The King of England is currently either Aethelred The Unready, who had been King since 978. King Sweyn is invading to take that title and become King of England himself. He is already King of Denmark.

but thinking back to the fourth episode, right before Thors died...
Love your comment
I just love Jackson's mumbling 😂😂😂
I've been here since episode 2 of AoT, subscribed since episode 3. So glad I happened to casually come across the best anime reaction channel
There's no wandering you find it boring when you even don't have any idea who's who and where's where. 👍
Jackson I can`t get over your voice !! It`s calming. You need to be a voiceactor or something. I`m also very happy about your vinland uploads, these are currently my fav. from yours :)
After finishing s1 today i can say i truly dont remember when was the last time i was so impressed and interested by a charachter like i am with Askeladd

I said what i said...
Jackson is the least confused of them lol.
Jackson is somewhat versed in history.
He has watched the show before, so even if he doesn’t remember everything off the top of his head, he’ll start to remember more and more as he watches.
Hugs from Brazil! We appreciate your content as you appreciate Guaraná ❤
Thank you!!!
I always got goosebumps when Grantius Introduced
I was not expecting a Brazil mention in the beginning, love from Brazil! ❤
Thorfinn's story has been halted by his father's death, and the only way it can begin again is with Askeladd. In my opinion this is why Thorfinn stops being the main focus of the show for now. Even though these episodes are slower, they are not lacking in substance and atmosphere and the greatest character moments in the show are still yet to come! I'm glad you guys took a chance and are enjoying it.
People talk a lot about the character development in this show and it is amazing, but to me what stands out is the themes which would not be possible without the characters. not many shows actually have interesting themes and present them in ways that allow you to come to your own conclusion. the themes surround ethics and while the author is definitely trying to show you his opinions, there are still many realistically written characters all with there own morals. that's why people talk of the shows "grey" morality, because the show is very realistic and ethics in real life aren't so objective. this show has given me much perspective and has changed me as a person and I wish to be stronger and kinder.
Hail king Floch!
Canute and floch share the same VA
Much love from Brazil 💚
You guys are amazing
The intro's to these videos have gotten better and better. I would listen to Brig read the labels off of can's all day.
When watching, I immediately recognized that Canute shares the same voice actor as Floch.
Episode 12-13: of appreciating I have no enemies.
I'm interested to see their reactions for Season 2. If they are expecting shonen-esque arc, they would be disappointed. But if they are open to seeing internal character development, they're in for a treat.
i love how confused they were for a minute there 😂😂😂
Canute's VA is King Floch from AoT, love that VA
eu fiquei realmente surpreso pela abertura do vídeo ter um guaraná e o cara falar português
não estava esperando isso lol
this is so cool seeing ppl still in szn 1 after watching szn 2
boring means dull... so i suppose something interesting can't be boring at the same time. i do get what brigg meant though. ☺️ hmm. vinland saga isn't always going to be action-packed. i love the fighting scenes but what makes this story epic lies in the story-telling, combined with the dialogues, historical references, and the tension that comes from the "slowness" and "quieter" scenes. at least that's what it is for me. ☺️
Thanks for the Brazil shoutout! Love you guys's content.
🫶🏻 🇧🇷
OMG. the story is based off of true history to the point that many characters, battles, and events really happened.
Eu não esperava ver alguem tomando guarana nesse canal kkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk

OOHHHH BRO CHEERS TO BRAZIIL!!! I was not expecting u drinking guaraná on this channel hahahahah. This is amazing dude I am really happy now.
One of the best beverages out there
I think you'll all really, really enjoy Arslan Senki/The Heroic Legend of Arslan if you all like Vinland Saga so much. Even better visuals at times than Vinland Saga, based on persian history/folklore, grand scale LOTR-esque battles, compelling characters, and by the same mangaka/artist as Fullmetal Alchemist. Hopefully you can give it a try and we can see your reactions on the channel!
Great time to remember Askeladd swore on his ancestor Artorious when promising Thors no one would be hurt.
Drown is one of the best anime songs ever
the confusion lol...jack's voice is so pleasing

Guys. Great work... I thought I would not enjoy your content after AOT. But I'm glad you guys are watching Vinland Saga (.which is at THAT level with AOT) and Chainsaw Man.
And remember...chainsaw man has different endings each episode, so some channels made reactions to the episodes and a.separate one to each ending. Good luck or whatever
Thank you!

If they think this is considered "boring", I wonder how they'll feel about s2.
Alright to summarize it. King Sweyn, Canute’s father, is the King of Denmark-Norway and he wants to conquer England.
If and when Sweyn dies, his lands would be inherited by his sons. The eldest would inherit Denmark-Norway, and Canute being the second and youngest son, would inherit England if they successfully conquered it.
yes
Hey great video as always, and great clean portuguese in the beginning of the vídeo, Im part of your brazilian audience. Salve salve, eu também falo português XD

England currently is being ruled by King Aethelred. He attacked the Viking establishments that are made under his father King Edgar. After aethelred it will be king Alfred who brought England together to defeat the Vikings and establish England as its own country. They want canute to be the King of the Danes. His father is the current Danish king. Hope this helps :)
Cheers from brazil 😁
So Brigg is Argentinian... I thought you guys were like Irish (American).

Canutes dad is now the king England since the other one fled and so that makes him the prince of England and his dad the king so all of the smaller kingdoms will be taken and turned into territory due to them going to war with them

BRAZIL MENTION LESGOOOOOOOOOOOO
Y’all been watching anime for months and still holding on to the anime hater tag😂😂😂
Not related to the episode, but most of the characters are based on real historical people, including Thorfinn. Don't look him up though, spoilers.
This includes all of the obvious ones like Canute and Leif Eriksson, but also the over-the-top characters like Thorkell the tall
Did you enjoy your Guaraná Brig?
