Indeed. A very likeable man. He made a mistake signing for Ferrari. At Williams, despite their previous reputation for viewing drivers as employees, he would have been nurtured and looked after. Ferrari, being a big, political bureaucracy did not work like that, and in Alain Prost, he had the ultimate politician and diplomat as a team-mate, who sorted him out comprehensively. He wasn’t able to politick effectively and make the team work for him. But come to think of it, very few drivers (bar Ascari, Surtees, Lauda and Schumacher) have been able to get the very best out of Ferrari.
We need a team like Jordan on the grid again that provides the conveyer belt of drivers for the top teams. All the teams seem to have junior drivers these days, but we need more cars on the grid so they can actually race and upset the top drivers and bag the odd win and podium.
Omg this is getting to be the best f1 channel on RUclips! Every single interview is ace. If only you could laugh with Gilles and Ayrton about things… brings a tear to my eye.
@@MooncricketsInc yeah, they did!! There are some RUclips shorts clips on the FFS channel (but not yet an in-full video podcast), and the full episode can be listened to on Spotify. My favourite one!!
It’s a shame they never asked Jean about the story of him and Gerhard rolling their valet car in the Maranello car park right in front of a horrified Jean Todt.. 😂
In F1 you have to be in the right car at the right time, which helps explain Alesi's one win. Its been 11 years since Alonso won a race, over 2 years since Hamilton won, and Schumacher didn't win any races in his Mercedes comeback. You can't be too critical of Alesi. Maybe he should have nursed the cars better, however even when Schumacher started with Ferrari, they were unreliable.
Alonso and Hamilton are the victims of rules which are favoring Adrian Newey (and the team he is designing for). The rules were set to end the Mercedes dominance and they saw the only way is favor Newey but it turned into bigger disaster instead.

Always admired Jean as a driver, and when he speaks you just think he is gonna start to cry, a great talent who just seemed to miss opportunuties in F1. If you know F1 you will know what I mean, one of my favourite drivers of all time and a true gentleman. About 20 years ago I was reading my monthly F1 magazine and I found out Jean is 1 day older than me, we will both be 60 this year in June. So I hope June is a great month for you and your family and have a very, Joyeux 60ème anniversaire.☘ :}
@@thiswillprobhrtI just went back to my local kart track and they have new karts, as soon as I hopped in already the seating position felt different the position of the wheel was different than i was used to and my arms got super tired holding it normally so I held it like Alesi does higher up and it helped
One of his best years was 1996 in the Benetton. He was regularly on the podium as a best of the rest behind a dominant Williams, designed by Newey. Add to the fact Briatore and Brawn were fighting, and a lot of the crew were already packing their bags for Ferrari jobs. Much like his display in Phoenix, 1996 was a real show of the talent.
That' s true. However , they ( the team and Alesi) had too fanfaronned , jumped uo and down before the season start and puts audience expextation very high. In that regard, the results were a huge deception. I remember the interview that Alesi gave to french paper L'auto-journal in the pre-season. He was clearly saying he was targeting the world title 1996 and he had no time left and he was anymore not at an age to be satisfied with small pieces. ( small results) ( translated from french). If they had played it a bit down , 1996 would be perceived as a far less of a deception or underachievement.
If you only knew how Jean Alesi scared me on Suzuka, 1995. I was so afraid for Schumacher that he would be so rapidly caught and brutally outraced by Jean.😂

I was there to see his only son and I've just realized his debut it race in France 1989. I went to Monza a number of times and was a number of frustrating car breakage including the year a rear hub failed and eventually. Back in the days of the V12s Alesi and of Berger were usually first out of the pits. One of my favorite podcasts...every time I hear their journeys I am reminded how much of life Jordan has lived...so many experiences that these guys had.
This is a great thing to see. In our life we meet and make certain relationships with people that will stay forever. A great piece of humanity watching Jean And Eddie
If you want to see how popular Jean was with everyone in the F1 paddock. go and look for video clips of him passing the checked flag for his 1995 Canadian win..... the whole pitlane was out on the pit wall cheering him over the finish line. EVERY team! That is love!
it's so good to see jean alesi. one of my all time drivers. i love jean alesi! such an icon and so much style. lovely guy. and to hear him say that about fernando, awesome. bring mark webber on!!!!!
I never get this when Jean Signed for Ferrari the 641 was pretty much the best car on the grid. How was he to know the Williams would be better for the next 6 years
Jean is synonymous with my F1 childhood nostalgia. So great to see him, and I love to hear the story of him going to Ferrari, as I only knew the speculation in the press at the time.
@nicjackson5741 it is a travesty of injustice he only got that one win though ,(great one to win on your birthday I agree) he should have been a 3- 4 time race winner at least I feel. Cheers

I stood next to him and we both stared in silence at this scene, and then suddenly Kimi turned to me and said, ‘I hate Formula 1’, and then just walked away.” Quite a contrast between these two Ferrari drivers. 😄😄
Allez-y Jean! He is such a legend. His manner of holding the steering wheel remains unique, and his car control was second to none. I remember seeing him get a massive tank slapper in the 412T2 once and by some miracle he kept the car on the track. Anyone else would have been in the wall.
Jean was an old head when I started watching i think he drove a prost car in his last year but great to hear n see the gratitude he has for Eddie n his family
love it, jean is my hero. i had 2 hero in my life, jean, and webber. then i grew up and now i'm simply passionate of motorsport. i'm not a fanatic anymore.
I'd put Patrick Tambay's Imola 1983 and Jean Alesi's Montreal 1995 wins as two of the most emotional victories in all of the time F1 has been held, the circumstances both of course related to Gilles Villeneuve. I loved Jean's very individual 11-1 hands on the steering wheel style. Very likeable guy, very good driver, perhaps not quite top drawer, but an extremely reliable number two, a good man to have on the team. Great interview.
He came to the Paris launch of the renalt r29 and my debut as a test and demo driver for them. Met him a couple of times after that. Lovely genuine guy.
I saw Jean win his only F1 win in Montreal in 1995 and have a picture of Michael on the back of his Ferrari editing the hairpin. Mind you in 1995 I did go to 11 of the 17 GPs! Alesi led many laps at the European GP in Germany that year.
I always loved Jean's spirit. He had a difficult time at Ferrari. I think one of his best drives was the 1992 Spanish Grand Prix in the wet - where he finished 3rd. There was also his win at Canada in 1995. The battle with Senna at Phoenix in 1991. The battle with Mansell at Suzuka in 1994.

17:56 The funny thing is that they were 2 Jordan on the podium alongside Alesi for his very first win. And 3 years later in Spa 1998 when Jordan won his first grand prix and even 1-2 with Hill and Ralf, Alesi was there on the 3rd place, which would be his last F1 podium.
By far the best podcast at the moment. DC & EJ are natural co-hosts. Jean Alesi is just brilliant.
It is impossible to dislike Jean, he’s all heart! 😭❤️
Too much heart for his own good. I didn't get to his battles with Eric Comas, but he really made a splash with Tyrell at Pheonix

And my favourite, always flying the flag for him and Berger.
Alesi (briefly) re-passing Senna at Phoenix was utterly fantastic.
taking the lead at the start of the Portuguese 93 GP from the 5th position on the grid
The most likable figure, probably ever to race in F1 alongside Rubens. I doubt you'll someone who'll truthfully speak an ill word about Jean
