Paul served in the Marine Corps from 2003-2008 and received a Bad Conduct Discharge on his way out. Why, you ask? Well, according to my research, the specific charges against him included "attempted larceny, three specifications of dereliction of duty, making a false official statement, wrongfully using another’s social security number, and ten specifications of making and uttering checks without having sufficient funds in his account for payment."
This type of discharge is one step below a dishonorable and former service members lose most or all of their post military benefits, including all VA benefits.

Right before his arrest, Whelan was found with $80,000 cash and the reason he went to Russia in the first place was to attend a wedding of a former friend. After having a long meeting with a Russian citizen on a solo day by himself, he was given a USB drive containing a list of all employees at a classified security agency. According to sources, the wedding party he was with was shocked to find out that he would spent a day alone, seeing that everyone was so close. And let it be known, Whelan was a director of Security and Investigations at a manufacturer here in the US. However, he couldn’t have been a spy for the US specifically because of his shitty military record which wouldn’t allow him to hold a clearance.
Personally, I’d rather take back a pot smuggling basketball player over a former Marine that didn’t even hold up his end of the deal, serving with honor.
Oh, and another thing, the Biden Administration did in fact try to get Griner and Whelan in exchange for Viktor Bout but they only were able to get Griner. I’m assuming it’s because if Whelan was on some bullshit, he’d be worth more than trading for one arms dealer.
