  • 2004 Ford F150, Rear End - Part ll its been a long wait and your about to find out why! wow is all i can say, this one nearly got the best of me. not to mention the compiling footage that added up in the process! nearly 12hrs piecing back together to bring this to you! hope i did you well and the wait was worth wild. come along and watch as i do my best to share my reasoning in addition to taking on one of the most dreaded task for most technicians! this is when preparation setup and patients is key. hope you enjoy

    Unusually thorough coverage of the task. Thanks much for making the effort to document this process. I may still choose to pay someone else to rebuild my F150 pumpkin, but I feel like you provided most of the knowledge that I will need to undertake the job.

    Man, it's a little disheartening to watch someone who really cares go through a diff after someone who just kind of made it work to turn a job around and get it out the door. Kudos to you for being upstanding in your craft. I'd bring my 06 F-150 to your shop next week for a rear end rebuild if you were in Baton Rouge.

    Your attention to detail is top notch. I like the idea to use the old bearing to knock in the new race. Also the feeler gauges to
    check that the race is seated. Very nice job with the video and the rear.. I found your channel a couple of weeks ago when I was watching Brake Kleen man over at SMA...

    Great stuff man. This is going to be invaluable. I've never opened a rear end before, but I have a shudder on deceleration that I believe is coming from the diff. wish me luck.

    41:54 so grateful to have found this series. I'm about to embark on this task myself for the first time ever on my 2013 raptor. Every part house around town was $900+ for a rebuild kit W/O ring and pinion! On a whim I swung into the local Ford dealership and dropped less than $350 for all the bearings and shims. Hearing the sound in the first video, I knew this was it as mine sounds the same except it is constant, whether I'm on throttle or off. So, now I ordered my ring and pinion gears as well, after seeing the damage to that one(may as well do it all right?). Found a returned but new set on Amazon for $58 made by the ssame brand you used here. Hopefully it isn't junk.
    Anyhow, glad to have found this vid, will be subscribing for sure!

    Differentials are a PIA to repair. I filmed the 3 part series I did on a Dana 35 and it took hours longer and even more hours editing. The total adsense revenue LIFEtime on all 3 vids is about $11. It's a labor of love for me. I feel your pain Will!

      Ozzstar very true, most all we do on here ads up to very little, pennies on the hour if we are lucky. most people don't realize this, i agree it's a labor of love, a sense of pride and confidence in our abilities, putting our selves out there for the world to see, keeps us honest and to be honest it's taught me to slow down and think deeper as a viewer would expect, on and off cam I find myself following this practice now, the value in this alone is priceless. thank you for stopping by

    Kinda stumbled upon this video. I don’t do the heavy stuff anymore(age&cancer)but, decided to check this out.
    Your tone & delivery is great. You have that methodical - cool, calm, collected, manner.
    Don’t ask me what “collected” is . .. I’ve been collected from . . But ..
    I subscribed because of your demeanor. 👍
    Note: get use to nitrile🧤gloves, because some of those chemicals can be absorbed thru the skin and mess up your DNA. It surfaces in your sixties as hormonal changes occur. 🙁
    Those damn bumps, that I thought were fatty cyst like my dad got, turned out to be MCL.
    And, wear an approved respirator if welding, do to the heavy metal fumes😷

    Thanks for the great video I'm a novice my mec told me the R.E would be going out on my new 96 F150 so i decide to change out the oil myself and see if the whining goes away your video showed me there are so many things that can be wrong so i guess i will just drive till it goes if the oil change doesn't make a differance.

    The peining of the inner bearing race diameter is an old toolmaker fix. If the diameter is too small you make it bigger by center punching the diameter to make it bigger, so you can press on the race and still maintain a press fit. Green Loctite will do the same thing, perhaps both.

    Fascinating information. Love rear axles & amazed at all that goes into building one. Must be a great feeling to build your own axle then drive at highway speeds then put your hand on it & know it's normal temps which indicates it's good to go.

      that is possible, i was leaning towards the same in part 1 not sure why i didnt mention that as a possible cause, but yes this was at another shop just prior to mine for a axle seal. it very well could have ran empty good point! thank you for the feedback

    When I worked with Ford axle building the 9.75 F-150 axles, I seem to remember the acceptable ring gear to pinion backlash was no more than .010 to .012.

    That ok on the case is from the backlash check , pattern check. Original case. Stopped using tone ring on case a few years ago. Now on axle

    knurling is what they call that seen it done in a shop i worked at in the past. watching this vid because my 04 f 150 is making the same noise and i know it has a back lash issue as well, im hoping its not as bad as this one.

    Pulling stumps? That should explain it all. The guy could have bought an old farm tractor for the cost of his differential damage. Nice video. Had a few f-150's 98-2000 and the differential had a whine and lot of play in them.

    Mine had a drum brakes put on . Got a used rear end with discs and luckly came from a wrecked truck. I didn't want to mess with it . Changing crown and pinion plus bearings and seals would run up the price and would be still taking a chance to get it set to specs

    seeing the same Ford problems over the years
    I have come to believe that the Ring is only surface hardened, and the gear is actually fairly soft
    thus, under heavy loads, the pattern distorts

      forgot to mention--
      in conversations with Ford engineers, they led me to believe it was to forestall chipping, or breakage, or cracking of the gear under heavy shock loads
      like my 1970 427 SOHC Mustang...
      34,000 miles.. a Quarter Mile at a time :)

      the gear would crack much easier if it was through hardened. you want some compliance in it for long life

    Hahahaha, chicken pecked the top and bottom of the support case halves. Yep, seen this many times. Rebuilt diffs for almost 9 years in the heavy duty, over the road, and agricultural industry. Sometimes the support case halves are so obsolete that you cant find the parts on old diffs and things that you just have to chicken peck the surfaces and throw some red loctite on it and hope for the best.

    Crows feet marks on the drive side of the ring and pinion. Meritor and Eaton failure analysis classic resemblance to the Forementioned .

    I would toss that carrier . Chances are the traction lock clutches are shot too . Mine has chatter on taking off on turns . I want to use a torsen style carrier on mine

      Steven Tenney yes that carrier is being scrapped, used as you seen is the best I could do for him, little time and money play a factor

    Why the talk of replacing the rear end for a bad carrier. New carrier can be had for the cost of a used/questionable rear assembly. Plus less work.

    I know you have to make money… and the client doesn’t want to spend too much….. but if it were my rear end, I’d want to get a new or rebuilt rear end. Their only about $300-500 depending on the remanufacturing company.
    I have an 07 that I purchased with 60k mikes a couple of months ago. The previous owner was trying to be nice and have all the fluids swapped. Unfortunately they put the wrong fluid in the rear end and within 100 miles it was screaming. I’m just going to order s new front and rear end differential and get 4:10 gears for the 35” tires I’m planning to use.
    Hope your company is growing band and your doing well.

    i have never seen a factory 4.56 gear ever put in a ford or any make of truck newer than 1960 so someone put it in and did it wrong. after you got done with the rear i hope you checked the front end also

    if he was pulling stumps, he more than likely crushed the crush sleeve more and loosened the pinion a little.

    Really great videos sir I love how you explain everything would you suggest tackling this type of job with just a couple of jack stands or should I just take it to a shop and have them work on it? I feel confident that i could do the job however I don't want to risk my safety and don't necessarily have all the tools.

      most likely was! thanks for bringing this up! i was leaning towards the same after finding out it was at another shop a few weeks earlier for a axle bearing and seal as mentioned in part 1. not sure why i failed to mention again in this part. thank you. i agree that is very likely! just because i drained a lot out we cant forget it was most likely topped off a few weeks ago, wish i had that answer

    The whole time I was watching this I was wondering how many hours you put into this job? Now, having said that, I realize filming it for RUclips, and explaining what you were doing probablly slowed things down a lot. But still I would imagine this being at least a 4 hour job at your regular-professional speed?

    I've taken my 06 F150 Lariat 2 WD 5.4 to a shop that rebuilds rear differentials. Due to an increasingly loud whining/roaring from the rearend. Jacked up rear wheels off ground sound seems concentrated just behind rear of drive shaft in differential. Hope when they open it up gears are ok and replacing bearings cures it. Dealer wanted $3850.00
    Also got a misfire at low rpm on climbing hills around 45 mph. Jerking. But quits upon acceleration. Spark plug I suspect misfiring. Looking to have all plugs replaced while they got it. Told Motorcraft plugs only. Hopefully coils ok and they've advised intake cleaning then drive to burn clean plugs to reduce chances of plugs breaking . Trying to hope, pray, and think positive. Lol
    Oh yeah. Take care them knees Brother. Pads or something. I know wore that t shirt. Lol

      Better hope it isn't your cam phasers lol. You can try and test it by putting it in drive, keeping the brake on, and holding it at about 900-100 rom or so and holding it there. If it starts misfiring, you have bigger issues.

    Last time I put a ring gear on a carrier just used a rubber mallet to tap it in place.

    Use an induction hot plate to heat up bearings or anthing else... No big oven needed...

    The ring gear change probably weight reduction schedule per Ford.They need a bit more left shim or did someone over torque pinion gear . That ok is ford OE maybe its in my 2002 9.75 im original owner

    on my 2002 F150, something in my drivetrain makes noise as I approach 50mph. Doesn't make more or less noise if I push the accelerator or not. Already replaced the rear wheel bearings. Wondering where I should look next.

    hey will correct me if iam wrong but I believe dana makes ford rear axles and I've seen them believe it or not put shims behind them carrier bearings for preloads it crazy and I don't understand why but they say dana sets them up that way my research and check it out! great video!

      Greg Robinson yes you are correct. Many other rears use shims behind the bearings, it's actually pretty common. I just never seen it on this setup before. I should have clarified that, sorry for the misinterpretation, thank for bringing this up though. We found the reasoning to be pretty obvious this time around, if they have used them on the 9.75" I just haven't seen it. They may in certain applications

      robinsonsauto thanks will iam a Chevy man myself they seem easier to me on there rear differentials I think chevys are manufactured by American axles Corp now days they seem easier to set up then a dana the danas sometimes have to have a case spreader to get the side bearings to go in with the shims for the proper preload the diff case design is just so damn tight on those danas! I will stick to my chevys but in your case you have to do whatever comes your way because it's your profession I just like to do automotive for a hobby iam working on my old 1990 Chevy k1500 truck just about every summer its great teacher for basic automotive training easy to work on!

    05 f150 I have 373 gr under warranty told ford noise in rear end same as you have they did something to it but came back later it whines under load one day will rebuild and add locker.
