He wrote this after a woman wrote to him, saying her husband was to scared to come home after losing a leg fearing that she wouldn't love him anymore, she asked Johnny to write a song for her husband, and this is the result

I've loved this band for 25 years. The lyrics are powerful enough to change your state from sad to grateful better than any drug. What a gift... Great music like this is timeless. They're as good or better live. Just saw them last week with my kids.
I don't know how John does it. I mean the lyrics he writes. They pack a punch. From songs like Slide, Broadway, Rebel Beat and of course ballads like this and Iris. The lyrics in this one I can't put into words. The video is one of the best they've shot. The lighting and the colors and the silhouettes in this are incredible.
GGD is the most underrated group of all time. Most of their songs deserve more airtime. I like everything they've done since Super Star Carwash.

Yes, Definitely one of their best songs of all. Inspirational and deep, Goo Goo Dolls are a cut above the rest of the music over the past 30 years. If you are deep in heart and soul their lyrics will penetrate and resonate.
Goo Goo Dolls has had me hooked for 10+ years. It's been an absolute pleasure going through my life and having this brilliant music. I will always associate certain moments in my life with this music, and it's a beautiful thing. Gives me shivers every time.

For example. I associate my parent's divorce with this song.
For people that don't understand the lyrics, John wrote this song as a "love letter" of sorts from a woman to her husband after she had given him a note at a meet and greet. He had injuries and didn't feel like the same person. In that context, I think the song makes sense and can also fit into many different areas of a person's life, not just a soldier's.
Goo's songwriting is absolutely stunning...I'm 35 and have been a huge fan of these guys since I was a young kid...Doesn't get any better than this folks.

Yeah hallelujah by leonard Cohen, times they are changing by Bob Dylan, and sounds of silence by Simon and garfunkel, are not nearly the best songs written....it's clearly this half ass attempt at a sorry ass iris.

The Goo Goo Dolls are so good at these kinds of songs. I love their habit of using deeper lyrics than the typical group.

I have "time won't ever steal my soul" tattooed around my wrist. nothing to do with the song meaning... my dad had dementia and although the disease stole his thoughts , it never stole his soul. Brilliant saying that touched my soul :)

Several of their songs bring tears to my eyes. I don't know of another band with so many songs with great lyrics.
This song and the Goo Goo Dolls have a profound impact on my life. Not only are they my all time favorite band, but they helped me get through a tough time in my life. Meaning I was going through some rough times during the years 2010 and 2011 with depression, anger, lose of hope. But this song, along with many more of their songs were able to help be get through those times stronger than before. Now i'm happier than I could ever be, with my beautiful girlfriend, who I met during my rough times.

One of the most beautiful songs, both in its lyrics and composition, that I've ever heard !!! It is powerful ! You'ld have to be made of marble not to be touched by this tune !!!Being 65, for me, I would rank this one right up with some of the finest of Simon and Garfunkel....on a par with the likes of the "Dangling Conversation", which also deals with relationship issues, much different of course than this, but compelling as can be.

This song really helped me through a tough time in my life. Multiple surgeries, pain killer addiction, almost losing the most important woman in my life, and realizing that some people see you as Not Broken afterwards. Its an amazing feeling! Starting to realize that I am not broken after all that has happened. Crawling out of that dark deep hole of self- pity and useless feeling was the best thing that ever happened to me. For those of you who don't know, John got his inspiration to write this song because of a letter from a fan whose husband had been injured overseas, and he didn't want to come home for fear of her not loving him as much as she used to, but she didn't care, she still loved him the same.
These guys are some of the best song writers period.

The last time I saw the Goo Goo Dolls in concert back in August, I really thought I couldn't love them or their music any more than I already do, until they played NotBroken, and I was just in awe, the music, the vocals, the lyrics, the combination was just amazingly epic. It literally blew my mind, I couldn't think about anything except for how freaking much I loved this song. It was an amazing moment for me. The Goo Goo Dolls have amazed me once again. :) Love you guys! :)

the first time i heard this song, it was introduced as a track written on the back of a letter that had been sent to them by a woman whos husband had lost a limb in the war and was frightened he wouldn't love her anymore. So in that sense the video makes more sense and the words have much more meaning :)
