Man, you remind me of my father. A keen eye for something old and well-made. He’d walk right passed something new and flashy for an old beat up knife or tool that just needed a little work. Old wood planes, old knives, things you don’t find anymore other than at a flea market or garage sale. He was an old craftsman and camper, a fisherman and writer from Kentucky. He wrote about “down home” a lot when we lived in Chicago when I was just a little boy.
After a lot of years not growing up with my dad since the divorce, his promise to me came true. We lived on his sailboat in California and were planning to sail around the world. During this time, we’d go to flea markets where he’d spot a rusty old something he just needed to have and bought it for nearly nothing. Fixed it up, got it looking brand new again.
At the San Jose Flea Market (capitalized because it’s just famous and huge), he was really into this particular stand that had a bunch of really old knives. We were looking for a couple boat knives and this stand had some. The owner was an old salty sailor from Sweden. Everything he had was old. Some newer knives from the 60’s, but most much older than that. Dad and this guy started talking sailing and my 18 year old ass was getting bored. (As usual) Eventually, my dad decided he wanted this really old sheath knife without a sheath, that had a four inch blade and a god-awful red painted wood handle. Yawn. Not sure what he paid for it but I’d guess less than a dollar. He bought me an old Case rigger’s knife with the one blade and the fid that folded out the other side. I still have that knife, but back then, he thought his ugly Swedish knife was better than my Case. (I didn’t know world-class steel like he did)
Dad spent a lot of time on that old knife, doing really fancy rope work on the handle and polishing the blade to a mirror shine. Made a fine sheath out of scrap leather. Wow! Incredible knife now! He showed me the Swedish maker’s stamp on the blade and described the steel as some of the very best in the world. “It’ll rust but no man lets their knife rust.”
Dad died about 6 years ago and I miss him terribly. We sailed all around the South Pacific and settled in Hawaii. One of the very few things I have left from him is his old Swedish boat knife.
Sorry for the long story, but you triggered a fond memory of mine. Thank you.
Peace and aloha to you and yours always. 🤙🏼

I have a Sodbuster Jr. Those are nice little knives. They last forever if you don’t abuse them. You should send yours to Case and get the broken blade replaced. They might do it for free. And if they don’t getting it repaired is still cheaper than buying a new one.
I also like that Buck 501. That’s another great knife. You got a hell of a deal on that thing. Especially considering the fact that’s it’s a pre date code knife which means it’s over 37 years old. $2 was an absolute steal for it.

Got myself a vertical sander with grinding wheel, small anvil, ball peen hammer, and a few other small tools to help me. Watching vids like yours, really inspires me to keep going. I think taking apart and learning how to fix/build these old knives, is best to do with the cheaper American made ones like imperial, colonial, hammer brand, cuz there’s plenty of them for cheap. Once I get it down, I will move on to more expensive, American made ones like Camillus, Kabar, shrade. You’ve got a new subscriber here, looking forward to learning from guys like yourself, who have been doing this for a bit.

Man, I wish I had flea markets where I live, even when there's flea markets they barely have pocket knives and the best you'll find is some abused swiss army knife, most of the time it's chinese knock-off swiss army knives where you can bend the blades with two fingers. This may sound weird, but if I ever go to the states I will be on the lookout for every flea market around.

VietNam 66-69. When I turned 10 that was my BDay gift from my Dad an Old Timer Red Stag Horn hunting knife that i wear proudly every chance I get. Case makes a good knives or use too but the past 10 or so years they turned to Pooh qaulity wise. For a pocket knife I carry a Barlow. Qaulity steal an holds a edge for awhile an just a classic design. I even use it for a skinner knife for squirrel an rabbit.

Two years ago I went to a flea market in central VA walked up on an older man selling old tools and knives. He said I might like "that old Rambo knife " he had in a bucket of fixed blades. Most were priced around five or ten bucks. This one had a piece of tape across a familiar looking sheath. $25. I handed him 40 and picked three other pocket knives the "Rambo knife " was a buck buck master 184. COMPLETE Including spikes. Blade was in great shape. Sheath had some minor scratches.

You could have taken the craftsmen wrenches in and gotten new ones for free. Very rarely see them around here for that reason. I used to live a town over from the biggest flea market in Wisconsin but the one in Denver I went to later was open on weekends and Wednesdays. I think it was at least fifty acres maybe even bigger

I like to carry a cheap or knackered* knife for two reasons. Firstly, I might damage it and secondly i'll lend it to someone who WILL damage it ! ( I'm in UK/England. Knackered means 'worn out/not working/tired etc

Hey from over the pond in England, I enjoyed this video and subscribed. I love knives, but UK knife laws are ridiculous. We are only allowed to legally carry a slip joint that the blade is less than 3 inches long!! You can't even carry a fixed blade unless it's for a good reason. Like wild camping or bushcraft.
I do have many flippers, lock knives, flick knives, fixed blades, balisongs etc but nearly all of them have to stay at home.
Anyway, enjoying your channel and will watch dome more. Lee
