Guinea pigs fighting over a clean cage

- Things were going so well. We were halfway through cleaning the guinea pig cage when the pigs started doing some cute exploration. Time to grab the camera! But then things took an aggressive turn when Zucchin decided it was grumpy time for no apparent reason. She did some nipping at the other pigs, which caused Butternut to start her nervous teeth chattering habit, which further escalated the situation. There were some angry guinea pig noises but eventually some rumblestrutting from Spaghett convinced Zucchin to stop and sniff the clean cage and things calmed down. I think our pigs have poor social skills!
WHAT’S PIGS?
We publish daily highlights of the adorable antics of our guinea pig herd. Subscribe to see what they do tomorrow!
In June 2019 we adopted five pigs from Los Angeles Guinea Pig Rescue. They are cute herbivorous pets with funny social interactions. We film all their behaviors, from cute guinea pig noises to eating sounds, playing with their food to sleeping with their eyes open, and occasional fighting. So far they have been most popular for their loud wheeking and rumblestrutting and their ridiculous guinea pig fights!
MEET THE PIG FAMILY
Spaghett is the boar of the herd. The rest of the pigs are females, but he’s a neutered male so they won’t be breeding. Sorry, no pregnant or baby guinea pigs! Spaghett has orange-brown fur with a white crest on his head and cute red eyes. He goes on morning romps with entertaining popcorning and zoomies. He does hilarious rumblestrutting for the ladies while purring. When pigs argue he trots over to comfort them. He likes burrowing through hay and standing on his back feet like a goofy dinosaur. He enjoys petting, especially scratching behind the ears.
Acorn is the youngest. She has white, black, and gold fur with a cute mousy face. She’s inquisitive, always wants food, and talks to herself while exploring hay piles. Little Acorn’s special talent is jumping on houses to go on rooftop adventures.
Butternut appears either confused or deep in thought. She has white and gold fur. Her hobbies include sleeping and yawning while flopped over with her feet sprawled out. She continues wheeking, squeaking, and squealing at us after we have already given her food.
Pumpkin has black fur except for white back toes. She looks like a cow, a non-guinea pig, and a rabbit. She has noisy standoffs with Acorn when Acorn gets feisty.
Zucchin is the oldest and grumpiest. She has white and gray fur with cute red eyes. At first Zucchin fought with Spaghett. There were teeth chattering, nose raising, and hair puffing battles. Now they get along, but Zucchin is still a grouch. She enjoys lunging at anyone who comes near. She loves to chase other pigs out of their homes, then follow them to another home and chase them out of that one too. But she looks like a cute rat!
THEIR HOME
The pigs live in a semi-custom 4 by 6 foot cage we made by merging 3 Midwest Guinea Habitat cages. We cut the seams of the cage bottoms and joined them into one large cage liner with duct tape and super glue. Now we have a MidWest cage of triple the size! The cage is on cheap folding tables so we can easily interact with the pigs. They first lived in the same 3 cages connected by ramps with DIY ramp covers we made by sewing blankets.
Their bedding is soft paper bedding from Small Pet Select. We spot clean wet spots daily and do a full cage clean when the bedding starts to smell funky. They used to live on fleece blankets with towels and newspaper underneath. Back then we washed guinea pig fleece by hand in the sink. But since moving to a new apartment guinea pig laundry is less convenient so we switched to bedding. We also considered pine bedding but thought soft paper sounded more comfortable for their little feet!
The pigs prefer free stuff to actual guinea pig toys. They love to hide under packing paper. A DIY guinea pig house made from a cardboard box is a favorite hidey. They are not interested in most chew toys but will chew the bark off small willow sticks.
THEIR DIET
Their favorite hay is 3rd cutting timothy hay from Small Pet Select. They also nibble hay cubes. But they get most excited about fresh grass. They also gobble up guinea pig pellets.
They eat nearly any vegetable. The only thing rejected so far was zucchini. Their favorites are dandelion leaves, fennel, cilantro, parsley, banana leaves, kale, collard greens, kohlrabi, carrot tops and roots, beets, bell peppers, corn with the husk, cucumbers, and pumpkin. They go wild for homemade wheatgrass sprouts.
Their water bottle is a 26 ounce Living World Eco+ glass bottle. They drink half of it in a day.
THEIR CINEMATOGRAPHY
The pigs are filmed with the latest GoPro Hero 8 Black in 4K.
We get a few comments on our fight videos accusing us of glorifying fighting or trying to exploit it for views. I wanted to clarify that we feel bad when they fight and a bit sad that fights are our most popular content. I would gladly trade in all the fighting views if it meant the pigs got along all the time. But that is not how our pigs work. So in the interest of accurately documenting their little lives we're going to show how they really behave and not sugarcoat things.
We did months of research before getting our pigs and it still did not prepare us for this aspect of owning them. I hope by showing this other people thinking about getting guinea pigs will be better informed. If nothing else, the crazy things our pigs do are a great advertisement for big cages.
I think it’s silly that people don’t know how guinea pigs work. Fighting is normal. Obviously it should be reduced but when you have so many guinea pigs living in the same space they will fight at least once a week- be it over housing or food or dominance. It’s the same as human beings... why would it be different when it comes to the pigs. I think you look after them well and I feel sorry for you that people who probably don’t even own pigs go around saying you’re trying to capitalise off of them. Guinea pigs aren’t all sunshine and rainbows... every guinea pig has fought at least five times in their lifetime
@@thecoreofanapple8969 Thanks for the support! ❤️❤️❤️ I am always very curious how other pigs behave and whether ours are exceptionally feisty. I'm sure a lot of our negative comments come from people who don't even have guinea pigs so I try not to take them too seriously. But I did want to make sure our loyal fans know how we feel!
I appreciate it because I was also totally not prepared either. It's helped me to know I'm not alone or a bad guinea pig owner. Mine don't really fight, but sometimes get on each others nerves. Watching your videos shows me things I need to be aware of and watch out for if it ever happens. Ignore the haters drama queen shit starters as you seem to be taking good care of your pigs as best you can. I know you're not being cruel and your intentions are good and meant to help other guinea pigs owners. I was so not prepared for mine, but I'm doing the best I can. I just have the two of them, two boars and one is protective of his brother. I'm sure some assholes would probably judge me harshly. I don't care because I know I love my babies and am learning watching many videos on pigs. Tours are nice short, cute , funny educative on fighting signs and sounds to look out for. I appreciate what you do.
@@ITIsFunnyDamnIT Glad to hear we have helped! We can all learn to take better care of the pigs together! We've gotten a lot of info from the LA Guinea Pig Rescue channel. I recommend checking it out if you haven't already.
@@ItsPigs I watch that channel regularly that one and Scotties, Animals. He also works at the L. A . guinea Pig rescue. Thanks
Wow that was a fantastic, clear-cut example of guinea pig hierarchy in action! Agitated Zucchin causing a ruckus and Spaghett overseeing things from the corner and eventually intervening and calming Zucchin down. Very cool to see
Yeah, we're really glad we have Spaghett to keep everyone calm!
I LOVE how polite, well-mannered and clever Spaghett is. Their social infrastructure and cultural norms are amazing, they're such socially intelligent little people, big love ♥
People?
@@sugarhieroglyph _Yes._
Zucchin: "Okay, who ate all of our houses? Was it you, Buttercup?" Haha 😂
You have some of the craziest pigs, which makes things interesting. I liked how Spaghett got in there and stopped all the ruckus and showed them who's the boss!
Yeah we are lucky to have him to keep Zucchin in check!
He’s a good boy!
I just love all your piggies. I'm a guinea pig lover also. Oh I hear some chattering.
Thanks!
Few moments later!!!
Poooh everywhere
haha
The are so cute. My 4 Guinea pigs arw responding to them. My boy is screaming and my little girl is popcorning in her cage.
Sounds cute! :D
HAHA so cute. That feisty one makes for good guinea pig TV :)
They're so cute
Mr. Spaghetti for President!!
Awww i love butternut
A box for your hay to eat out Of just don’t let them eat the box but so cute
I guess that they are confused by the disappearance of their habitat, including all the hiding places and all the food! They are worried. Stressed out.
She's a right one, there all waiting for there huts 😊
Pigs started cute exploration
The red one is the king.
Guineas: Oooh!
Pumpkin: Itch itch!
Butternut: (minding her own business)
Zucchin: Get over here!
Butternut: No!
Zucchin: Come here!
Spaghett: Zucchin enough!
Zucchin: You want a piece of me?
Spaghett: I will take my leave now thank you very much!
Other guineas: Ooo drama...
I Love your pigs and how they play , sometimes fight or rumble strut on film. My pigs Love to play and chase each other around the cage, but they WON'T do it no more if I try to film them. I can even sneak a peek at them playing without them stopping. I swear they do some funny awesome things, but it figures mine would be the kind that won't let me film them in the act. All I got is those few videos you saw and said spying on the pigs. LOL. An yeah I had to to even get what I did on film. Now I can't even spy on them without a camera. They catch me no matter how careful or sneaky I try to be. I swear they are one step ahead of me. An they Love to flip their houses over, I just wish I could get this on film but don't know how.
We've gotten lucky, ours have never really minded the camera. If anything they tend to run toward it to check if it's food!
When I clean my guenia pigs cage he always starts jumping 🖤
Cute!
Same, one of my Guinea pigs do that. But While my one Guinea pig is popcorning my other Guinea pig stares at him😂
@@imawh0re4h0rr0r 😂😂cute
I have three boys and one of my boys pops around when I'm cleaning the cage because he knows after fresh hay is coming. He loves when I put hay in everyday.
They always look like they are having a meeting. Then egos prevail over common sense.
I only have two large cage mine have scuffle every now and again keep the good the work
Good to know, thanks!
Pupkin 😢😘😘😘😘pooor butternut spaghetti sherif Cage
Butternut
It’s so cute
1:18 that male in the corner is like: ah, here we go again, my women start to argue again.. let's settle down and watch the drama :D
It is funny to watch him escalate his interventions. If he's sitting in a house he'll start by lifting up the house with his head like he's saying "Hey, no fighting!" Then when that doesn't work he'll get up and rumblestrut for them.
Awwww the light brown and predominately white one (butternut is it?) always seems to be on the receiving end of these things, he seems so timid 😭
Yeah, Butternut is definitely at the bottom of the pecking order. Its a tough job but some pig has to do it. She doesn't seem to let it get her down tough!
It's Pigs! Are they all female?
@@123marcusmooney Spaghett is a neutered male and the rest are females.
Of course it is zucchini
She is easily upset!
Also I realized you can't actually have a conversation in community post comments, so carrying over the drawing discussion here! I thought of another quick option of posting a video of the drawing. But I think we'll be setting up an email soon too.
It's Pigs! Ok! I’ll rather wait for the email!
@@lovewheeks1208 It's ready! If you go to the "about" tab of our channel page there should be a button to get the email now. (Sorry for the extra hoop to jump through, there's an extra check there so bots can't see it.)
It's Pigs! Sent it! Will send more once I make more of course
L9l. It’s so funny and I have two names mushroom and Charlie
It’s pigs, quite literally.
Meanwhile where do you get these amazing liners?
Haha, yeah, we thought of the channel name because that's what we say when they are doing something silly that cannot otherwise be explained.
The cage is 3 MidWest guinea pig cages joined together. We made this video on how we merged them: ruclips.net/video/yJ4Ii3uQKEc/видео.html
cos they got no places to hide!!
We started taking the houses out to clean because they created bottlenecks and actually made it worse!
My two male guinea pigs chatter 😭😭😭😭😭
Oh no!
@@ItsPigs my guniea pigos are the same way with spaghetti and zucchini ur pigperoni
I can relate to this because about a month and a half ago I was cleaning my two male Guinea pigs cage out and they started chattering. then they stopped, and then all of a sudden they charged at eachother! Of course I tried to stop them from attacking eachother and I got bit (i rather get bit then my Guinea pigs getting hurt). Then a couple minutes later they charged at eachother again and then one of them was bleeding in his mouth and he was whining, of course I was crying and scared. They both are fine right now. But they were being dramatic about a week ago when I took their cave out. then while I was at school they decided to attack eachother. One of them(oreo)had their ear bit in the middle and the other(snickers)had their ear slit down. i was crying and I felt so bad because they both were hurt(they didnt show that they were hurt, I knew they they were hurt when I felt something on my and of course it was blood, then I looked at both of their ears and then I saw the blood and their ears that were bit). They dont fight anymore. I think it happened just because they didn't have the cave in their cage. Also they are brothers and the are about 4 or 5 months now.
We have female pigs (plus a neutered male) and they seem prone to squabbles that look violent but they never actually injure each other. I am generally against telling people what to do on the internet, but personally I think we would separate the offending pig if blood was drawn like that.
I've never had multiple male pigs myself but from what I've heard their fights tend to be more serious and young male pigs can become incompatible as they grow up. So I think there is a strong possibility they will fight again and need to be separated. I know of other people who split them up into separate side-by-side cages so they can still keep each other company without being able to fight.
Why are they freaking out?
Naaaa, for a small herd I think they get along pretty good. We have two and they steal each other’s food and poke noses at each other over the food dish. But they don’t really fight so we let them work it out on their own
Thanks!
Zucchin vs Spaghett
Luckily Spaghett can calm her down!

Interesting! I wonder what they are thinking sometimes.
It's Pigs! Oh I know my one Guinea pig thinks about vid c and 2end one thinks about being mello

Don't you put hay in there , might settle them
