    I call you a perfect teacher even though I don't know your statue in education! secondly I have fallen in love with the way you explain this particular subject, it is very edifying and informative. I am from Africa, Somalia because there was severe civil war in my country, thus I have not had the opportunity to go to a formal school or I have never been to a class to study! I typically get my educational resources from you-tube and my teachers are just like you and many other unknown ones. I am now preparing my GED and Microsoft office and your teaching skills are very helpful to better understand a lot about GED. you are amazing ( Maestro)

    I would love to see this done for younger students. They struggle to understand this and your explanation is perfect - the topic of public health and clinical medicine are too advanced for them though.

      Great! I hope it helps. It takes a lot of practice. You can do both, look for the main idea but you can't lose track of the details because they are the ones pointing to the main idea.

    Interesting take:
    Now, I think Argumentation is only a subset of this main idea + supporting details structure. We have informative writings, narrative writings, pursuasive writings that also exhibit this main idea + supporting details structure. Generally, English has a set of writings that exhibit this main idea + supporting details structure, Argumentation beng one of them.

      Exactly! There are different types of ideas (definitions, expositions, illustrations, arguments, etc.)... paragraphs (and whole essays) are structured around the idea (not the other way around).

    Your videos are really good, on the main idea, supporting sentence.. they really helped to understand the reading. Have you written a book? It will be really useful for non-native English students who take exams like IELTS, PTE whose primary language may not be English and struggle to do well in Reading and Writing.

      It depends on the paragraph as you can build a paragraph focusing on causes or characteristics. However, you can focus on the causes and add characteristics to explain them. (I'm not sure I addressed your question... I hope so).

    I'm kind of mystified by this, but I don't really know how to write a basic paragraph nor know how to dissect one? Do our schools not teach us how to write a paragraph or identify paragraphs?
    I'm examining the examples, and my brain doesn't identify the details or the main idea when I try to. I can't seem to have a detection system that analyses the components of the paragraph and detect the pieces of the paragraph.
    On another note: it appears that a paragraph is an argument or is in argumentative form: conclusion and premises. I'm not sure if other languages operate like this, but I can at least see a connection between the argumentation structure and paragraph structure. Are students learning how to argue when they learn how to identify components of a paragraph through analysis of paragraph, and write their own paragraph?
    Even now, I realize I don't even know if I wrote any paragraphs to begin with. Nevertheless, I'll say this, this series is really eye opening.

      Your paragraphs in this response are well organized, so you do have a good sense of how this works.
      I vaguely remember being taught about this in school but, at the time, it didn’t make much sense. Thinking is such an innate process that it’s difficult to think about how we do it. It takes a lot of practice until we start seeing a pattern. That’s why, when I teach reading, I keep telling my students to read as much as they can every day.
      There is no surefire “trick” or “shortcut” to understanding a paragraph. You can look for transition words showing you where the ideas are and how they’re organized, but writers don’t always use transitions where you’d expect them. The only way to understand paragraphs is to look for patterns of information and try to build a mental picture of the paragraph. In a way, you are doing what the writer did but in reverse.
      You’re thinking these things through... that’s a great step towards improving your reading comprehension... which you develop over your lifetime.

      In this type of questions, the reader needs to understand what the topic and main idea of a paragraph are. The main idea is the main point that the author is making; therefore, if you were to "add a new supporting detail," it would have to support that main idea.
      For example, if an author is writing that "Reading is an important skill for several reasons," any detail must be a *reason* that supports the idea that reading is an important skill.
      The conclusion is slightly different because it must also support the whole passage. In this case, you must understand the central point of the whole passage and add statements in the conclusion that are supported in the body of the passage.

      That's correct. A well formed paragraph has a topic and a main idea. The topic is what the paragraph is about; the main idea is what the writer says about that.

      st of thanks for your reply.Secondly Sir when we read a research about some topic,it has a specific topic like "why our planet is getting hot day by day" when writter want to inform Us about reasons,he/she mostly convert the passage with several paragraph, then should we go for the topic and the main idea for each paragraph or we rather focus on the main idea than topic as we already know about the topic.thanks

      Everything needs to work together. When you write about a topic, you have a "central message" that you want to communicate; that is called your *thesis*. Using your own example, let's say your thesis is "Our planet is getting warmer for several reasons." To support your thesis, you can write several paragraphs, where perhaps each paragraph will address one of the reasons. So, each paragraph (1) has a main idea (in this example, a reason the planet is warming) and (2) that main idea supports your thesis. Paragraph 1 has a main idea that supports the thesis... paragraph 2 has a different main idea that supports the thesis... paragraph 3... etc...
      So, when you the reader is done reading the whole passage, the reader should understand that our planet is getting warmer for several: reason 1 (explained in paragraph 1), reason 2 (explained in paragraph 2), reason 3 (explained in paragraph 3), and so forth.
      I am simplifying the process here. For example, sometimes one of the reasons may be very complex, so you write more than one paragraph to explain it... but you get the idea... I hope :)

      Sorry I only now saw your comment. I'm not sure how I can help you other than tell you to refer to the video; besides, I'm not sure what your assignment is to be able to help you.
      Essentially, supporting details are the details that explain a main point. Think of it as, for example, the concept of "dog" could be a main point... the details would be "mammal," "barks," "a pet," and so on... the supporting details provide further information on a major idea or concept.

      The way the sample paragraph was written, it lists the *causes* of diabetes. It was included in the video just to show how paragraphs have patterns of information... don't take anything in it as "medical advice." For accurate information, see www.niddk.nih.gov/health-information/diabetes/overview/symptoms-causes . They list the symptoms (for example, increased thirst and hunger, blurred vision, weight loss) and the causes of both type 1 and type 2 diabetes.

    in teaching reading comprehension critical response question, students are usually asked in the exams question like " Imagine yourself as a co author of the article. Add any Two supporting details in conclusion.

      Writers don't "make it hard" to find the main idea. Some writers are actually very straightforward, though others may take a little more effort for readers to "get the point." The good news is that the more you read, the better you get at reading all sorts of writing.

    Dear Snap,
    Ugh. You list cause, cause, cause, cause as pointing to the topic of the diabetes paragraph. Respectfully, I say you have not understood the sentences. For example: "...the body cannot produce or use insulin effectively" is not a cause of T2, it's an effect of developing T2. The following two sentences are also not causes but risk factors in developing T2. This leaves the effect of this paragraph all over the place. If you had to make a concluding sentence to encapsulate the paragraph it would be better as: While the risk factors and effects of Type 2 diabetes are understood, the causes are not (within the purview of this example).
    It is important that the proper decoding of, not just the words, but the underlying concepts happen.

      I hear what you're saying. The information about diabetes in that paragraph comes from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases -- www.niddk.nih.gov/health-information/diabetes/overview/symptoms-causes?dkrd=hispt0015
      The point in the video is not to teach about diabetes but to teach how to understand the main idea of a paragraph. The reader must use the information in the paragraph to understand it as it was written... You went a step further and used critical thinking and information you already knew to dispute the main idea of and the information in the paragraph. *That's awesome!* :D
