How Wang Chuqin Improved My Forehand!

- I recently watched the 2023 Doha Finals and I was AMAZED by Wang Chuqin's performance. He only dropped one set! During his final match with FZD, I noticed something about Wang's game that I could benefit from adding into my own game. The results have been amazing! My forehand feels stronger, easier to reset, and more available to me.

EPIC, such an awesome video, I really appreciate you including my match! I think my forehand needs some weight transfer too, good advice. But we'll work on that later lol. But no i was seriously giving it all i had that entire match, even when i was up 10-5 in the final, like i missed this monster of a forehand by like a centimeter at 17:57. And then you blocked 18:06. And then beat me in the counterloop rally at 18:32. And this punch at 20:37???? 😭😭😭 Insanity! Well played
Dude I know I don't think I've ever saved that many match points in one match 😂 Probably never will again for as long as I live 😂 Great match buddy I had fun as always and looking forward to the next one 🫡🏓
hi Russell, try not to back away from the table everytime you are facing someone's fh/bh loop. try to block near the table. Table tennis is always hard when you playing further from the table. I hope it helps. excited to see u growing from here
I’ve seen our high school champion do an exaggerated, slow (but out of this world spinny) brush loop and he does a 360 jump at the same time so you are correct with Wang Chuqin’s chest going to his non dominant side for a powerful loop!😅
@@patmer2087 that sounds awesome 😂 Thanks for the comment really helps out the channel 🙏🏻😎🏓
Amazing content, so educative ❤😊
Great catch! I've been having a shoulder pain for a while after switching to Hurricane 3 Neo on my forehand. It requires more powerful swing, which put more pressure on my shoulder. I knew that the pain was definetly because of my wrong technique, but didn't really understand what was wrong. Thanks for sharing this idea, now i know what i should focus on in my game!
Thanks for the comment I'm really glad to hear that 🙏🏻 Let me know how it goes for you and thanks for stopping by the channel!
Great video from a great player and coach. Keep it up!
Thank you for the kind words and thanks so much for stopping by the channel! It helps so much I appreciate it 🙏🏻🏓😎
Saving 5 match points in the 3rd set was really commendable
Facts that was crazy!
Let’s gooo!!!! 🎉🎉🎉
Hey dude, I actually had the exact same problem for a while, I played penhold for a very long time, learned the RPB pretty well actually, but always had a stronger forehand. When I switched to shakehand, I realize how much I relyed on my wrist and arm for the forehand stroke, instead of my legs and waist doing all the work. Now, I have been trying to play more backhand oreinted, more like Fan Zhendong, so I am not really training for a super strong forehand inside the rally, but on open ups and underspin loops, getting a really good open up with the forehand is probably my most consistant stroke, and it all stems from relearning the forehand stroke. Even when blocking or countering, I try to kind of bounce my weight back and foreth between my legs, and ROTATE MY HIPS AND SHOULDERS, which makes the stroke very natural and rotate around your body. Ma Long and Wang Chuqin have some magical sauce that they put into their forehands, first of all opening up the arms almost straight, but also keeping the weight foreward and over their feet, not leaning back, and almost always spinning the ball fast and foreward, with a very thick contact. Ma Long specifically has just some kind of unreplicatable form, I genuinely dont know what is so difficult about it but it is a magical feat that no one can hit a forehand quite like him.
Oh yeah, also I was looking at your form at the end there, and it looks like you really dont use your forearm or wrist very much at all. Definitely keep the wrist very relaxed on the forehand stroke, and try to let the arm straighten out a bit more. Maybe try training underspin loops where you just use youre forearm and wrisst to generate the spin and lift to pick up the underspin. It will probably translate into your rallys as well.
Any concerns about the extra torso rotation affecting recovery time? One thing that might be an issue is if people let their head rotate towards their non-dominant side, they may lose track of the ball. WCQ looks like he is fully rotating his torso while keeping his head and eyes fixed looking at the contact. Luckily, you won almost all points where you were able to perform the full rotation FH. But a stronger player that puts back everything may have exposed a slower recovery issue.
Pay attention to your right leg; after each topspin, it straightens out, shifting the weight entirely from the right leg. However, you should maintain 20% of the weight on the right leg at the end of the topspin.
Additionally, the step with your left foot during a topspin should only occur in the final shot. In all other strokes, stay grounded with both feet or make a small jump forward with both feet.
The forward step with your right foot causes your hips to turn right, while your arms and upper body rotate left, resulting in self-blocking and incomplete torso rotation.
To refine your technique, avoid using 100% power shots. Practice with 50-70% power to develop proper body movement. Gradually, with small jumps, you can achieve 100% power in your topspins.

@@Nathan_BriTT Another thing. Its not all about shoulder rotation. Its also about your hips and waist rotating, and using your forearm and wrist to generate spin. these should help with consistancy. Also, are you really qualified to be coaching someone if you don't know these things?...
damn your backhand is strong, and few advices on forehand: try to straighten out you arm a little bit and start to bend it at the contact and try not to move your wrist during the stroke. stiff wrist gives u a big consistency boost.
Can you please give some tips regarding backhand drive and topspin. I always struggle with tension and pain in my shoulder and being consistent in sending the ball to the same spot
Yes I would love to! I was already thinking about doing a backhand video next so maybe it's a sign 🤔
@@Nathan_BriTT thank you bro✌
@@danielejims5979 no problem, thank you for stopping by the channel! 🏓
The shoulder rotation is a good tip.
Hope it helps you with your game! Thanks for stopping by the channel 😎🏓
Funny enough I had a light headache a while back that get better after I took my headband off. Been feeling same thing with hats that are too tight and wore too long.
Don't be like FZD, no ninja turtle headbands 😂 Thanks for stopping by the channel!
nice video, but honestly a lot of it is not really relevant info about wang chuqins forehand. the part about Fan Zhendong was intersting but was a bit too long imho, other then that cool video!
Another tip I got from my coach is to draw power from the ground (as all the chinese coaches say as well)and forget you have a racquet for a minute: the straight arm movement is the last part of the kinetic chain only made possible by 1) as a right handed player, transferring the weight from the right to the left foot, causing a rotation of the hip and torso then 2) hip rotation in the opposite direction along with torso rotation and 3) only then using am almoist straight arm rotation, hitting the ball further away from your body. on the ball contact the last movements are the "closing" motion of the elbow and wrist, following through to the top of your forehead. the perfect analogy is a classic uppercut or sidehook from the boxing world
That's okay the video was intended to be about my forehand, watching him just helped me realize some things about my own technique. Thanks for stopping by the channel and for interacting, I love the comment!
Nice video and good observation….
Do u use backhand grip ?
Thanks for the kind words and for stopping by the channel!
Yes, I use the FZD ALC blade with the flared grip.
@@Nathan_BriTT I love the FZD ALC! hurricane forehand and 09C backhand just like the legend, even if I might not be able to get 100% out of the rubbers. Thinking about switching to Dignics 05 or maybe a hybrid tacky rubber from another company like xiom, but i really dont know. I love 09C at the moment, so good for flicks and counters.
You stand up when you stroke through the forehand... Imagine playing under a low ceiling inches above your head. This will also keep you leaning forward and you will know instantly if doing it correctly as it takes more effort and the left leg will feel more tired than usual. You will also be immediately in the ready position to react and can take the ball more early to put pressure on the opponent. Compare yourself to a wang chuqin multiball session where he is opening up on constant pushes and you will see the difference...when your looking for it. Thank me later and give me a mention in the next one! 👍
This comes in clutch. This week, I want to completely change my forehand. Tried two days ago, very difficult. Not everyone wants to feed me slow balls.
Oh god, your technique is not something I can look up to.
I totally relate to that struggle. Thankfully we have this robot at my club now so I don't rely on others to feed me balls anymore 😂
If you are still fiddling around with your forehand, my tip is to simplify it as much as possible. Relearn it from the ground up, don't just start with the big massic full rotation swings. Start with a nice, slow forehand drive with a partner, not spinning too much or hitting too flat, not swinging the arm wildly. Just focus on transfering the weight and rotating the hips while making a nice short stroke and keeping the angle exactly the same. Feel the rythm and find the timing, then start to spin the ball and tiny bit more and rotate just a little more. Once you have done that for maybe ten minutes and are very comfortable, start to really loop and have your opponent block, but DONT OVER DO IT. keep the stroke nice and short, drive foreward with the racket, try not to swing the arm too big, if you are trying really hard you are doing it wrong, Rotate the hips and shoulders, make sure you contact the ball in the same general position from your body, and MOVE THOSE FEET to get into position correctly. always be bouncing the feet and getting the rythm of the ball, with tiny baby hops side to side to compensate from player error. dont just adjust with your arm and body, actually move your feet side to side, even when just blocking. Eventually, after a few days, if your are really rotating those hips and getting the timing correctly and moving those feet, you should develop a very comfortable, effortless, spinny, and powerful forehand that is also very consistant since you use the same stroke with every shot. Good luck and happy training!
fast opening. the raket must behind the other foot, when you hit the ball you move your body forward and the foot step also forward, that mean you move a halve circle . try it

Haha weird. I had similar superstition with FZD a while ago. Every tournament where his hair was short, he was amazing. Every tournament where his hair was long, he was average.
😂 I'm so glad to hear I'm not the only one that thinks this way. I swear the ninja turtle headband is the reason for this 4-0
@@Nathan_BriTT A lot of Chinese TT fans said the same thing about Fan on social medias here in China, which is interesting. I personally think the same way. A man should show his forehead which influences his spirit power greatly, especially for a sportsman.
@@piercejiang6602 exactly I know for sure that at least 80% of my true power lies in my forehead 😎😂
What the heck is that a penhold defender?
What does he think he's doing?
Don't worry he took the pips off finally 😂 He's back to double inverted now
Great video. However just a suggestion, from what I may have noticed, seems like you are holding the racket too high up, as in the webbing between the thumb and the index finger is touching the wing of the racket. Loosening the grip will also help increase the power. Also it seems like you are a little stiff from the waist up. Now my observations are simply based on what I could see in your video.
I'll get right on it 🫡 Thanks for stopping by the channel!
Are you sure of what you're saying? I see lots of professional players with very different grips including hands closer to the blades
A think you missing one segment … you dont swing full swing every time, just on killer shot or mid to far distance.. close to table you dont so full swing.
Your wrist is not lose .. blade standing like pliceman with sign stop
So... You've been watching Ma Long & Xu Xin for the last 10 years & only now realized this stuff ⁉️🤔
Fan Zhendong was losing because of the hair band indeed, haha! He got rid of it and he has been killing it at Doha. Time for revenge against wcq
I knew it! Superstition confirmed 😎🫡
@@Nathan_BriTT I spoke too soon. Fzd lost to Lin shidong 😢 but that was still hella funny….teenage mutant ninja turtles headband

Your forehand needs more lag...
The relaxed arm follows the torso & creates stretch muscle energy & speed.
Learning to hide your serves from your opponents like your idol? Great for you
Nope in this video I talk about how I learned to transfer my body weight through my forehand shots and prevent further injury to my elbow. Thanks so much for stopping by the channel and the comment helps so much! 😁🏓🙏🏻
