Yes, the gondolas (sometimes flatcars or bulkhead flats) are used as "spacer" cars, for safety purposes, given the extreme temperature of the molten metal in the "bottle" cars.

That's an SD20, which is an SD18 rebuilt by the Illinois Central; later purchased by the Indiana Harbor Belt.
