- This video shows grocery shopping in a British Supermarket, Marks and Spencer, in London. Marks and Spencer is a major British retailer that sells clothing, home products and food products, mostly of its own label.
Today we'll be walking through the store and see what M&S Food offers.

Using a trolley to shop at Marks & Spencer. That’s when you know you’ve made it.
That is hilarious. I only ever go in to see what they've got that's interesting and I'll maybe spend £15 or so. I've never even considered a trolley lol.
It was only one of those half trollies. Upper middle class.
@@Matt19matt19 If you go to M&S around 3pm you get some great reduced products. Full price is usually out of my budget, so I go for the reduced stuff.

It's amazing food for sure but pricey.
reminds me so much of my student days in glasgow. MS was a luxury for me. Normally we poor students shopped in ASDA and LDL

M&S is one of the reasons I could not live abroad, I've been shopping there for 40 years.
I live in Colorado (USA) and I enjoy going to grocery stores when I travel. I always feel two things tell me so much about a place: their grocery stores and their Sunday paper. Well, the Sunday paper isn’t as relevant as it used to be. Anyway, I had to laugh as I have absolutely no idea what a “posh dog” may be. Here everyone must wear a mask while indoors or you will find yourself escorted out of the store....

I have not been to an M&S for a long time. My wife goes occasionally and picks up a reduced item.
I have wondered what it would be like to go round the food halls in Harrods. I used to work there in 1969.
A really posh Waitrose branch would be interesting for a comparison.
Some of the posh shops show some mind boggling food and wines.
I don't think they have shopping carts at Harrods and I doubt they would let him film in the store. I always liked the idea of going to Harrods but once I get there I usually end up leaving quickly without having bought anything.
M&S has gone down a bit.Its always been expensive but the products used to be very good, now its just "OK". Waitrose has always been an overpriced con. A lot of their stuff is tasteless. CO-OP is quite pricey but quality consistent. I shop around a lot and overall nearly all the chains have put their prices up on the most basic things. Importing inferior stuff that we grow here is silly. I only buy British fruit and veg and I don't mind paying extra for the flavour and supporting home growers is a good thing.

I am Portuguese but whenever I am in the UK, particularly in London I feel it is my second home. Your videos are a way for us to explore the city at a time when unfortunately we cannot travel.
It is strange that there are people without masks inside the store, and some with the mask wrongly placed (with their nose showing) here in PT it is mandatory the use of a mask as well as the disinfection of hands within commercial establishments. And the security guards are always on the lookout for those who don't respect the rules. Thanks Sanpo for the videos, great idea in these strange times that we live in today.

Love m&s they always have interesting stuff. It's more expensive than other places but you get interesting items. It's not somewhere to go if you're on a tight budget though

Hi Sanpo, I must confess I was rather distracted, trying to see how many people I could spot not wearing a mask!
I think this was recorded before the latest rules on masked came into force.
I used to purchase my food/groceries from M&S until a year or so back but quit when I realized I could purchase pretty much the same produce in Sainsbury's for around £20 per week cheaper with no reduction in quality. The main problem with all the well known supermarket chains is that they rarely cater to the singleton.
Excellent video! I like that you showed us a wider variety of products this time. M&S looks really nice and is a big step up from Tesco. I always liked their sandwiches when I visited London. We used to have small M&S shops in Vancouver years ago but sadly they all closed.
All those shoplifters in Vancouver can't blame them for closing down.

My first impression was packaging and sooooooooo much plastic on all the food products.
The store looked more like a pharmacy than a grocery store.
The second impression was the unique design for most products under the M&S brand.
The last impression was the convenience of ready made foods on one hand and the thought that people do not know how to cook from basic ingredients any more.
If you look they also sell food loose as well yes am British and l no how to cook it's for people how haven't got time to cook when get home at 6/7 o'clock at night and lot of food is covered now because they don't want people picking things up then changing there mind put it back down because of the virus
In big cities, many people are time poor - long hours, long commutes, & you need to include time to exercise in your day, personal admin, etc. For many single ppl, it's not worth the hassle, the time or the money to prepare an entire meal... M&S do high quality prepared meals at a good price compared to the wastage in cooking for one person. Plus, many ppl pop in at lunch to get this stuff on the go, take back to their office to eat a hot meal. Cheaper than take away from a cafe /restaurant.... cheaper than take away full stop! That full Indian 'take away' meal for two ppl... £10?! That's a bargain!!

I visited Australia a few years ago, I found the food was very expensive but good quality.
If someone's not wearing a mask, feel free to hit them with your cart (trolley). If it's an employee, do so repeatedly.

SS, Another great job of showing everyday London life!! So it appears we here in the US are more expensive than the UK but less than Japan? Always interesting to see the different food products offered around the globe. The UK has some of the most different "Crisps' flavors than we do here. I would say US takeout is more valuable though! So you guys are doing better on that front! And it still pains me that Cheetos are harder to find in UK

Christmas seems so close now and I'm hoping to visit some of the London Markets during that time ;) I also find it curious that the markets haven't been popular in the US. Do you guys have some similar ones for other holidays, like Thanksgiving?
I think you UK is very cheap for day to day groceries now.
@@Cyrano263 Our Thanksgiving holiday is more the stay at home with family and eat all the turkey and stuffing you can(it's one of our biggest in-home cooking and baking holidays). Then shop it off the next day on "black" Friday LOL! That's the American Thanksgiving holiday in a nutshell!

That's a good sized M&S. Not many people do their everyday shopping in M&S, especially for branded goods which are always cheaper in regular highstreet supermarkets. However, they sell great quality food, particularly their ready meals. It was good that you showed some of the meal deals, of which they have quite a number, and can offer a significant discount. They also regularly issue money saving vouchers for future visits.

I work at an M&S store in a small town, and we are all wearing masks. So i guess it's at the store managers discretion as to whether or not employees have to wear them:/

If staff are behind screens masks are not required. Also I think this was recorded before the latest rules came into effect.

"People are using it like a supermarket these days...." any League of Gentlemen fans out there= :) I miss Marks! They don't ship food abroad, not even a tin of beans, so I always stock up on their tea and things when I am over in the UK. Love their Xmas grub!

I like shopping in M&S but there isn’t a branch very close to where I live most of the time (so I mostly use my local Sainsbury’s), but whenever I’m at my other home (less frequently during Covid-19) I shop there often - quality is pretty good & whilst it is a little more expensive than Tesco/Sainsbury’s it’s worth it for some things.

In SOuth Africa there’s Woolworths which is exactly the same as M&S. I’m sure you have something similar.

I was surprised at how many are not wearing masks. Most prices are comparable to the U.S., I think. Prepared food is so over-priced for what it's worth. The price for one wrap could buy someone a loaf of bread, a package of bologna and a block of cheese for sandwiches for a week.
True. But i think there is def a market (clearly) for this in the UK. There are many cheaper supermarkets (Lidl, Aldi, etc). Possibly Tescos is is only real competition, given M&S is not your usual suburban supermarket (being attached to a department store). Many living in the city - travelling workers, single ppl (for whom the economies of scale just don't calculate when you buy cheaper, but larger quantities - eg some stuff turns before it can be consumed in a single household), tourists, the well heeled, it's all about quick, easy, high quality, food for urbanites. The average 4 person family isn't doing a weekly shop at M&S. I haven't checked out their other videos to perhaps see an Asda & maybe a Sainsburys or something to see how the prices compare.

@@MsCateStar I used to think Tesco's was cheap until this year, same basket in Sainsburys, Asda and Morrisons. Weirdly Morrisons was the cheapest, then Asda, the Sainsburys, then Tesco for what I buy.
Iceland is cheap but doesn't have all the items I buy. Didn't bother checking Waitrose cause you just know they would be the most expensive. And I wasn't able to get on Ocado for a few months during the pandemic as it was reserved for the elderly and most vulnerable and tbh haven't gone back since, but Ocado is generally closer to Waitrose in prices.
Aldi and Lidl are cheap but even though I have one in town it's out of my journey way, they don't do online shopping ... and tbh I hate carrying too many bags. lol
You can get m&s delivery with ocado now but wish they still did Waitrose .

Over here Marks and Spencer is regarded as being expensive for food. But ASDA that was owned by Walmart untill recently. Is regarded as cheap.

I know Spanish Iberian ham is expensive but it's the tastiest ham you'll ever eat.
Loved this grocery store walk-a-bout SO much! Favorite products were the British salmon, sourdough loaf, pulled pork crisps, pistachio and almond cookies, mixed-sized eggs (wish we had that in the U.S.), Cornish cove cheddar, and the Chinese take-away box (definitely don't have in the U.S). You can now make yourself a ham and cheddar sandwich on sourdough, with pulled pork crisps and a cookie on the side! I was jealous of the lady in the market with the bag from Mango. Clothes shopping at Mango and then grocery shopping in London afterwards...my life dream.
The food from Marks & Spencer is above average quality. All their food is yummy. I had a number of great meals :-)

Marks and Spencer is expensive, but it not really a place where you do a full shop, mainly people go there to pick up a few bits

It was of a little more interesting for me because I have worked for M&S Simply Food. Many new arrivals over the years can be seen.
You should like this one. The Tesco one is good too. They have good products
Love my local food store only one problem is the size of the store and the virus and having to que up outside because of the size of the store and the social distance and cold weather conditions and if it's raining not a option for me anymore, I am 63 years old and it doesn't matter what time you try to get into the store to having to wait until people's come out and I relying heavily upon my daughter works permanent night shifts 5 nights in a row and I don't want to have her time taken up waiting for me to do the shopping, so that I have only been twice since February and the last time was a stressful experience so I said to shopping elsewhere early morning when she gets home from work and I am ready to go out with her and she sits in the car. I only get out once a week for groceries and I like to choose what is available and not rely on my daughter to do the shopping.

Love M&S! They've the best deals in town (foodwise) is this the Oxford St branch? Is huge and you can find all types of food from around the world ,well they all have a wide variety of products which make it nice and fun to shop there. Thanks for the video I can't wait to go back to London and the routines of my day to day life when I'm there. ❤ London
