  • This clip is a very moving closing statement made by the defense in the movie "Snow Falling on Cedars."

Totally agree with your comment, Max was robbed that year in the nominations. One of the greatest closing statements ever portrayed on film. Von Sydow has been portraying perceptive old men since the 70's. He is ageless as is his acting skills. The ensemble cast in this film earned their pay. Highly underated movie.

One of the most beautful movies I have ever seen. Ethan Hawke was excellent in his role. ~Cynthia~

RIP Mr. Max Von Sydow. Wonderful actor, probably best known to Americans for "The Exorcist". But he did so much more. Some of his films I recommend: "The Emigrants" "The Seventh Seal" "Flight of the Eagle" "Pelle the Conqueror"

4 minutes and the camera never left his face. No need for an editor. Spencer Tracy would be proud. Catch Von Sydow's work in " Hannah and Her Sisters " and " 3 Days of the Condor " apart from his Swedish masterpieces with Bergman.

It's too bad this was an uneven film and its reception was mixed. Too many people felt betrayed viz their own private mental version of the book and as such the movie could only disappoint. Nowadays it would be denounced as some variant of cultural appropriation and that's too bad because these 4 minutes are every bit the equal of the climax of Twelve Angry Men, To kill a Mockingbird, The Verdict, etc, though more on the strength of the actor who delivered the (excellent) lines than the writer who wrote them. Maybe their stature will grow with time.
    RIP Max von Sydow.
