  • "ӨTUKEN" is a documentary film by Wild Strongholds that explores the conservation efforts in Mongolia to protect the majestic Hangai argali and bring attention to the broader benefits of sustainable hunting practices. The film draws a connection between the conservation of game species, the preservation of their habitats, and the awareness raised about how ethical hunting supports these efforts, all told through the voices of the local people.
Mongolia is home to several species of argali, including the Altai argali, Gobi argali, and Hangai argali, which inhabit the central regions of the country. The argali population in Mongolia has faced significant challenges due to habitat degradation and overgrazing. However, through dedicated conservation projects and regulated hunting practices, their numbers are being carefully managed and preserved.
The documentary features Governor Galbaatar Davaanyam of Tsakhir sum, whose family name "Göröös" translates to hunter. With over 16 years of governance experience, Governor Davaanyam shares his invaluable insights into the sustainable use of natural resources. He emphasizes the critical importance of ecological education and community involvement in combating environmental degradation and promoting wildlife conservation.
Biologist Onon from Altai Nomads NGO brings a scientific perspective to the narrative, analyzing the current state of wildlife populations and the severe impacts of overgrazing and climate change. Her expertise emphasizes the urgent need for sustainable practices to preserve Mongolia's unique biodiversity.
Muugii, a seasoned guide and hunting outfitter, shares his extensive experience in sustainable hunting practices. Through his stories, the film highlights the delicate balance required to maintain wildlife populations while supporting the local economy. His passion for ethical hunting and conservation provides a vital link between tradition and modern ecological practices.
Chuka, a key figure in the documentary and a representative of the Hunting Consortium, offers a deeply personal narrative. His lifelong connection to the land and its animals enriches the film's portrayal of Mongolian culture and underscores the significance of conservation from a local perspective. Chuka's stories provide a heartfelt look at the challenges and triumphs faced by those dedicated to preserving Mongolia's natural heritage.
As the documentary unfolds, local government officials, hunting guides, and community members share their experiences and knowledge regarding the rehabilitation of the argali population. The film emphasizes how trophy hunting generates significant revenue, a portion of which is reinvested into conservation efforts, community development, and the preservation of natural habitats.
Through Ed Hudson's journey to hunt a Hangai argali, the film showcases the stringent regulations and meticulous processes that govern international hunting in Mongolia. Ed’s experience highlights the crucial contribution of foreign hunters to conservation efforts, funding initiatives that protect wildlife and support local communities.
"ӨTUKEN" weaves together traditional knowledge, scientific research, and legal frameworks to present a comprehensive vision for a sustainable future. The documentary offers a profound reflection on the importance of conservation, advocating for a harmonious coexistence between humans and nature while celebrating the rich cultural heritage of the Mongolian people.
