Zero disrespect to any of the other amazing conversations this podcast has broadcast, but this is truly a high-water mark in scope, gravity, and warmth in a conversation about rock and roll. More than much gratitude.
Jack has attacked various people here in Detroit and abroad, his favorite mo is to get everyday people he hates banned from establishments where he knows the owner.. This guy is a PIG
Jack's speaking voice is brilliant. Love it's growly low-tone texture. Got many insights from this interview - from writing freely, no punches pulled to the Trans-Atlantic interflow of Blues and Rock&Roll and the resurgence of vinyl records. Amazing 😍
Jack has NEVER disappointed me... he's a man who knows what he wants to do & does it his way. He's an inspiration to many these days. He's that rare artist that you never know what you're gonna get. I'm a lifetime fan & have introduced his music to generations of my people & will continue to do so. Great interview... love KAZ from NSW AUSTRALIA xx
Wow, just blown away at how cool this interview was... Rick's interview style is simply top shelf and deep, yet casual and unassuming. Absolutely loved all the stories and music discussion. Very inspirational. Kudos.
I am completely in love with Rick's podcast i met him years ago at the rainbow bar and grill... love the factbof how much ive learned about myself and my approach to creativity to music nad life...thanks so much for these interviews and book.
I was just listening to this podcast on Spotify. I’m at the part where Neil Young walks in…. And Jack is playing you this new song on his acoustic. I couldn’t help but feel how his voice (Jack) would compliment Neil Young’s voice pretty good I think. I almost feel like that could have been one of Neil Young’s songs or sing it together as a “duet.” Just wanted to put it out there in the Universe. 🙏🏻
Thank you @RickRubin for giving back to humanity. Showing the beauty. Great interview with Jack White. Not a White Stripes fan, but fan of that cat for sure.
I love it when I hear others who love music talk for hours about music. It makes me realize that maybe I wasn't dropped off by a UFO after all I'm just a musician! #MUSIC
there can be no greater coincidence in this universe than Neil Young stepping into a Jack White interview with a beer and reminiscing about the funk troubadour Rick James. pure gold.
I'll never forget when I first saw the NME article about "Jack White's new favorite band, Arctic Monkeys' .... Hearing Jack even just mention them so casually in this conversation makes me feel a certain way.... a good way. A full circle kind of way. Love Jack & Alex & company!
Amazing dual interview! Jack and Rick are legends deflecting their music interests is genius! Never disrespecting any genre! I could of listened for hours😁
Another fantastic episode. Thank you. Part of your conversation brings to mind a Dizzy Gillespie quote from the documentary "Miles Ahead." He was talking about influences and "copying" other artists and developing a unique voice when he said, "Imitate, assimilate, innovate." Sage words.
I’ll never forget seeing jack play drums with the dead weather back in either 08 or 09. I just know I was only 13 years old and had my mind completely blown. Since then I’ve been lucky enough to see jack perform in all of his projects EXCEPT white stripes lol
Other wildly artistically robust power trios include Rush and Primus- plus the mentioned Police, Cream, Hendrix Experience . Great conversation this is!
i remember purchasing a vhs recording of the white stripes( i believe u can find it on youtube) but they were very young , and jack was still in upholstery and Meg was this shy girl very cute. there was also other bands like the demolition doll rods and a weird uncle/manager lol it was in Detroit. watched it everyday for weeks. back in like 2001.
I was a straight up hip hop rapping samplers turntables guy. JACK White White Strioes song "Icky Thump" song made me buy electric guitwr so then I started electric guitar singing in and rap then along with the band Jet
18:02 I never thought about 7NArmy not having a chorus, so that now links it to ‘Little Wing’ to me; and that’s pretty amazing, even if it’s just pretty amazing to me. I’ll be sure to tell Jack. I somehow run into him in oddball places, whether he’s touring or not.
Two things - they should have put a mic on Neil as soon as he showed up - I mean, audio counts right? And - too bad we couldn't hear Neil's playback of his new material. Good show. Thanks.
When it comes to trios don't forget Grammatrain from Seattle! "Imperium" flew under the radar but was hella lit and "Lonely House" still has some of my fav spongy, overdriven bass tones.
R Kelly isn’t disseminating misinformation and conspiracy theories via streaming. Whataboutisms is almost always a very poor argument. Should Neil be holier than thou? Hands too clean for anything? Or are human beings limited and choose their battles. Standing up to malicious fools like Rogan, is not a bad battle to choose.
Gotta disagree with Jack on Jackson Pollock. I thought the same thing - that it was all idea and attitude - before I saw one in person. The textures of the painting blew me away. They reminded me of a Gothic cathedral.
Jack uhh...your dead weather drumming is the most fascinating instrument consistently in the band with Alison's voice. You an amazing drummer jack. Yeah, you got famous playing guitar. But it is not hard to hear your love of drumming.
Power trio bands besides Cream, the Jimi Hendrix Experience and the Police (off the top of my head): Rush, Nirvana, Green Day, ZZ Top, the James Gang, (some of) Blue Cheer, Hüsker Dü, Budgie
The topic of mass appeal being a point of shame for some artists I think comes from inherently knowing that if the sound of your soul resonates with millions of others then you most likely don't have as uncommon a soul as you'd wish/thought you did.
Just be a contrarian, I did find it funny when you guys couldn't think of many "3 Person Bands" out there... I was screaming -what? How about RUSH! Grand Funk!! ZZ Top!! Stevie Ray Vaughn! Etc. LoL, good times. : )

Hmmm - Kinda agree w/u; Def gonna give this a listen - Even though Jack n Neil are sickening people
Sickening? How do you mean?
and jack white’s coke habit
Frusciante episodes are stellar as well
Had the same sentiment
This is great but also check the 5 part conversion with John Frusciante
Jack and Rick are the reason I believe in the power of music.
Jack has attacked various people here in Detroit and abroad, his favorite mo is to get everyday people he hates banned from establishments where he knows the owner.. This guy is a PIG
Ayè sir!
Not Neil?

As a long time dabbling musician, just starting to explore recording, I thank you for sharing your knowledge so freely.
I love a real songwriter discussion. Keep em coming
Wow, just blown away at how cool this interview was... Rick's interview style is simply top shelf and deep, yet casual and unassuming.
Absolutely loved all the stories and music discussion. Very inspirational. Kudos.
Two absolute legends together…Rick has become a huge inspiration…Jack just forever and a day 🖤
...& then there was 3!
So incredible listening to Neil and Jack talk about process and pure inspiration
Hey! That sounds like a great song! Neeeeeal and Jack and me!
See king crimson!
I am completely in love with Rick's podcast i met him years ago at the rainbow bar and grill... love the factbof how much ive learned about myself and my approach to creativity to music nad life...thanks so much for these interviews and book.

I love you Rick Rubin! You inspire me to keep my dreams alive in ways you'll probably never even imagine!
Love you too bud, glad I could inspire you.
. . . And then Neil Young stops by out of nowhere. Ha. Awesome.
💗 Jack White 💗
I'm an artist not of the musical variety, and this is still GOLD
A sandwich artist?
@@lomarsweed6604😂
there can be no greater coincidence in this universe than Neil Young stepping into a Jack White interview with a beer and reminiscing about the funk troubadour Rick James. pure gold.
Brilliant move for Jack to ask Rick about his guitar/playing on the early Beastie Boys stuff
ha - my friend was just telling me “What’s the Trick?” sounds like a Beasties song.
I really feel like Rick was kind of in awe of this moment. I know I was overjoyed to hear this.
Rick has such great insight and such interesting questions. Love it!
I'll never forget when I first saw the NME article about "Jack White's new favorite band, Arctic Monkeys' .... Hearing Jack even just mention them so casually in this conversation makes me feel a certain way.... a good way. A full circle kind of way. Love Jack & Alex & company!
I've listened to this a couple times now, I think it might be the best jack white interview... that there is
as hands on as one person can be, excellent musical history and appreciation.
I love how much i'm learning from this, full of gems...I'll have to listen again! Thanks you'll.
Amazing dual interview! Jack and Rick are legends deflecting their music interests is genius! Never disrespecting any genre! I could of listened for hours😁

Wait until you hear him playing guitar ;)
How crazy amazing was this conversation, thanks for posting
Rick James and Neil Young parties would have been wild.
Within those seven notes, the clovenhoved master speaks and sleeps. Dare I say hallelujah! ✌️❤️🤟😘
EXCELLENT!! I really enjoyed this conversation.
Life is a path lit only by the light of Jack White’s guitar.
The whole part with Neil was amazing
Other wildly artistically robust power trios include Rush and Primus- plus the mentioned Police, Cream, Hendrix Experience . Great conversation this is!
Was looking for a rock trio comment! Like they somehow forgot about Nirvana or Green Day! Blink 182, Motorhead, the Beastie Boys...
I think Muse has a unique big sound for a trio
JACK......I LOVE YOUR DRUMMING. I HAVE SEEN YOU LIVE 3 TIMES AND I WANTED JACK ON DRUMS EACH TIME. PLEASE PLAY MORE DRUMS LIVE JACK.
Excellent, thanks!
47:22 Jimi Hendrix and Cream were the last successful 3 piece bands? Hey Rick, ever heard of Nirvana?
i remember purchasing a vhs recording of the white stripes( i believe u can find it on youtube) but they were very young , and jack was still in upholstery and Meg was this shy girl very cute. there was also other bands like the demolition doll rods and a weird uncle/manager lol it was in Detroit. watched it everyday for weeks. back in like 2001.
These three men could live forever and I'd be alright with that.
Neil Young walks into interview. Plays songs. Good vibes everywhere. What an honor. What a great interview!
Great episode!
The Power of Song is embodied in a man named Jack White.
Loved this...Mr. White👌
Jack probably listened to 88.7 - 89X like me in ‘92-93 ❤❤❤❤small world …
Master Class in Artist Development.
Amazing insight and feedback bouncing back from two groundbreaking pioneers. Excellent.
I was a straight up hip hop rapping samplers turntables guy. JACK White White Strioes song "Icky Thump" song made me buy electric guitwr so then I started electric guitar singing in and rap then along with the band Jet
Good stuff. Local H is a two piece that pre-dated White Stripes. Since they were looking for others.
Really enjoyed this discussion thank you.
It doesn’t get much better than this
I remember seeing Flat Duo Jets in some club in NYC. Made a big impression on me.
I will have to check em out, never heard of them before this discussion..
I kind of wish this were video, even if a ugly studio set-up, I love looking at these two folks because they are so expressive.
I would love to hear all the stories that rick rubin could tell about his experience with the music business
Incredible Historical Document. 👏🏻
Saw Jack in Orlando last week. I transcended beyond what earthly thing I’ve ever been my whole life for those 2 short hours. Incredible show
Thank you!
Loved it.
Flat Duo Jets with Dexter Romweber ! Great shout out. Brilliant band.
This is awesome
Two things - they should have put a mic on Neil as soon as he showed up - I mean, audio counts right? And - too bad we couldn't hear Neil's playback of his new material. Good show. Thanks.
at 19:07 maybe Rick meant to say a LP Double Cut since he said it was a '56
Jack. 3rd Man Records needs to sell record players.
Great stuff!!
Can't wait to hear this new NY weirdness !!!
When it comes to trios don't forget Grammatrain from Seattle!
"Imperium" flew under the radar but was hella lit and "Lonely House" still has some of my fav spongy, overdriven bass tones.
Jack has such a damn sexy voice, it's dope.
this is like musicians therapy
FYI Neil Young had no problem with R Kelly being on the same streaming service; Rogan, however, had to be stopped. K.
Pretty much turned me off from anything NY will do … ( sad to say , but he called his shot & turned off many fans in the process) NY should retire
What an amazing conversation. Just beautiful. 👌
Gotta disagree with Jack on Jackson Pollock. I thought the same thing - that it was all idea and attitude - before I saw one in person. The textures of the painting blew me away. They reminded me of a Gothic cathedral.
Husker Du was/is one of the best 3 piece.
Yes 🙌
Che grande collaborazione mitici Rick e Neil
I felt that way about Bruno Mars when he arrived... but, man, he nailed the formula
Yeah bro I’ve been listening to the song shotgun willie a lot lately, good shit
Didn’t kerry king actually play on license to Ill also
Would be awesome to see Ray davies on here or Dave even
Ootje Oxenaar for anyone wondering about the money guy at around 40 minutes.
Jack uhh...your dead weather drumming is the most fascinating instrument consistently in the band with Alison's voice. You an amazing drummer jack.
Yeah, you got famous playing guitar. But it is not hard to hear your love of drumming.
🖤🖤🖤NEIL IS STILL YOUNG 🖤🖤🖤
I’ve spent many years now only HOPING that Rick would produce Ricki Ricciardo, and now that dream has come to be!…
awesome
Power trio bands besides Cream, the Jimi Hendrix Experience and the Police (off the top of my head): Rush, Nirvana, Green Day, ZZ Top, the James Gang, (some of) Blue Cheer, Hüsker Dü, Budgie
Tom Jones advised keeping the humidity at 60%. I bought a hygrometer and it really helps keep my voice clear.
shoot I thought Jack was going to be the interviewer rather than the interviewee
Hey YA!
His first show was fugazi!!!
Wait a minute How did Jack White morph into Arthur Fonzarelli?
I got Jack's first solo CD at Starbucks of all places and probably cost less thsn my wife's coffee there😅
Omg the trying to remember a melody struggle is real. Always record! Lol
The topic of mass appeal being a point of shame for some artists I think comes from inherently knowing that if the sound of your soul resonates with millions of others then you most likely don't have as uncommon a soul as you'd wish/thought you did.
Neil Young on a different level.
In a different way I'd say
I think Neil means Tim Rose was in "the Big Three" not "the Thorns."
Just be a contrarian, I did find it funny when you guys couldn't think of many "3 Person Bands" out there...
I was screaming -what? How about RUSH! Grand Funk!! ZZ Top!! Stevie Ray Vaughn! Etc. LoL, good times. : )
I know Jack downplays his singing yet I always thought he sounded similar to Robert plant
The Gories ❤❤❤❤❤
Ricks too cool for this dude
