  • The Old Man is a captivating short film that introduces you to the remarkable Kgosimoruti Keekanamang, also known as Double Kays. He shares a piece of wisdom: “Learn how to pole a mokoro while the waters are still shallow, so if you fall into the river, you won’t drown.” Growing up on the island of Jao in the Okavango Delta, Double Kays learned the intricate art of making nkashi and mekoro from his father. Despite facing many hardships, he has always held onto his culture and has dreams of passing it on to his children.
The river, with all its beauty, is also dangerous. Double Kays is saddened that his children, fearing the risk of drowning, are hesitant to follow in his footsteps. Yet, he remains unwavering in his commitment. Even in his old age, he continues to work diligently, driven by the belief that his craft is vital. “I grew up a poler and I will continue to pole until my last breath,” he passionately states, determined to keep his tradition alive.
Dive into this heartfelt short film to experience the essence of the Okavango Delta and witness the inspiring journey of a man dedicated to preserving his cultural heritage.
