I like the focus on going to the side/ towards the back. If for whatever reason the technique doesn't work, you're in a safe position so they can't hit you, and you can follow up with something else.

depends what kind of grab. this is a variation of the monkey grip as the wrap around thrumb is not only restrictive but easier to break through the gap. I use both. gable and monkey. allows my wrists to move more freely
