    Never really bought into the whole N64's Gran Turismo, but this game was easily one of the better racing games on the system.

      @vcdecide  Год назад +10

      I agree that it is one of the best racing games on the system, not to mention that ''WDC'' stands out for being a racing game quite different from the other racing games on the Nintendo 64, which were more focused on the "Arcade" style (games with less commitment to realism).

    Just a correction:
    N64's Expansion Pak offers an additional 4MB of RAM for a total of 8MB, not an additional 8MB.

    • @vcdecide
      @vcdecide  Год назад +20

      Thank you for the correction (the 8MB Expansion Pak is the version for the Nintendo DS, not the N64).
      Yes, there is an 8MB Expansion Pak for the Nintendo DS, so I must have gotten confused. I will be more attentive to that in the next videos.
      After all, one of the goals of the channel is for us to learn from each other.
      I am no more or less than any of you here, so it is possible for me to get confused and make mistakes as well.
      Thank you once again for your correction.

      It's not surprising. N64 is comparable to the first 3D cards on PC. It's not because a lot of dev did not know how to use it correctly, that the system was bad. It was mainly the fault of Nintedo who did not share enough knowledge with them.

      E é como comentei com algumas outras pessoas aqui, para aquelas que já estavam cansadas dos jogos de corrida do tipo ''arcade'' no N64, o ''WDC'' acaba sendo uma ótima alternativa por ser diferente do norma encontrada aqui no console de 64-bit da nintendo.

    Yea!, World Driver Championship! I love it 🥰. The comparissons with Gran Turismo come from the more "realistic driving" as most N64 racing games had more of an arcade handling/driving, but the way you progress in the game is different and there are no license test.
    As i know this game uses custom microcode running in the N64 RSP instead of the standard "fast3d" microcode suplied by Nintendo, that is why this game was not working some years ago in most Nintendo 64 emulators as emulators didn´t emulate the Nintendo 64 RSP and Graphics Chips at all, they had to hack the game and add the custom microcode to the emulator.
    One interesting thing i have noticed with this game is that the intro credits and attrack mode, the game menus, and race replays are always displayed in high res mode regardless of the selected resolution in the options menu or the in-race menu. The "normal" res mode seems to be 320x240 at 15bit color depth (the dithering patterns are very noticeable), the "high res" mode i think is 512x240 at 15bit color depth but displayed in a 480i video signal. The game adds more escenary to the sides and cuts some scenary from the top an button giving a letterboxed widescreen appereance as the game is still technically rendering a 240p buffer displayed in a 480i frame it has big letterboxing. If your tv alows to customize the screen proportions you can get almost a "full screen" display for the high res mode tough.😎
    The framerate is a little worst in high res mode of course, hitting the 24 fps range while the normal res mode manage to hit 30fps more often, the frame rate drops are more noticeable when the car starts drifting.
    How did they manage to achieve "high res" without expansion pack?, well my guess is:
    1- The high res mode is not that high to begin with (512x240 is a very common resolution in Ps1 games)
    2- Custom microcode than was more efficient than the one Nintendo provided.
    3- I remember to have read an interview with the developers pointing that the game is running without z-buffer so that helped to keep the framerate "stable" or just tolerable.
    I love this type of comparissons on the N64 with and without expansion pak, i think is very interesting to see the struggles and ingenuity the developers had with the hardware and see how they used the extra memory to improve things and the sacrifices they had to do to make them happen.😉

      Pretty sure the overall display mode in hi-res mode is 320x480i and then a sub-rectangle of roughly the equivalent number of pixels to lo-res, but in a widescreen aspect, is what's actually being rendered, i.e. the middle 320x240i of the 320x480i screen.

    • @jsr734
      @jsr734 7 месяцев назад

      @@Felice_Enellen i don´t think so. If i understood, you are implying that the game is rendering at 320x240 in high res mode, and just displaying the 320x240 picture into a 320x480 frame. I don´t think that is correct, because the game graphics get smoother looking in high res mode, with subtle less aliasing than in normal 320x240p mode.

    • @Felice_Enellen
      @Felice_Enellen 7 месяцев назад

      @@jsr734 No, what I mean is that it's a 320x480 display mode, and the game is only rendering the middle 320x240 region. So it's double the vertical resolution, but only using half of it, so still the same number of pixels, but still double the usual resolution within that letterboxed area.

    Me gustó mucho tu comparación, no todos tienen la misma capacidad de discernimiento de la realidad, y muchos vienen a este medio a buscar respuestas, en mi caso es entretenimiento, las diferencias a simple vista es que inmediatamente que solicitas al sistema que haga cambio de resolución hace un apagado de vídeo y vuelve con las cosas un poco más pequeñas, evidentemente cambia la resolución a mayor, y se ve que pasa de formato 4:3 a 16:9 o parecido, también al arrancar la carrera se ve una pequeña bajada de FPS, pero al pasar a los primeros puestos casi ni se siente entre una y otro modo de juego, en tal caso se hubiesen apoyado en el expansionpak y hubiese quedado aún mejor, me parece un gran juego, lo probé en el pasado pero no tuve mucho tiempo con el. I think the expression "What's the catch?" would work also. I mean in high resolution mode you have everything squashed and stretched with those black bars you would see in widescreen film home releases. I would prefer the standard resolution out of convivence of not having squint at my TV screen for the novelty of high resolution. Also the car looks like Mustang GT or Skyline GT-R. No music? Even after the rocking intro sequence.

    al poner las franjas negras le ahorras calculos de pixeles a la consola pudiendo asi subir la resolucion sin perder fps pero aun asi se nota que va mas lento en hi res
    yo prefiero jugarlo en low y tener mas fps que poner high res de hecho.. todos los juegos de N64 tanto con expansion pak como no cuando le pones hi res reduces mucho fps sin embargo aca en este juego el bajada de fps esta muy bien logrado
    pero si lo pones por ejemplo en duke nukem zero hours es injugable... star wars racer lo mismo perfect dark lo mismo
    de hecho perfect dark es uno de los poeres en fps en esa consola al punto que el juego es dificil de jugar por la mala respuesta al control
    mi recomendacion siempre tanto que tengas expansion pak como no es no poner alta resolucion
    hay juegos donde la cosa va mas alla de solo poner alta resolucion en san francisco rush hours 2049 podes jugar 2 jugadores con expansion pak y se te desbloquea una nueva pista que no se puede jugar sin expansion pak y tambien tiene efectos especiales extras dentro del juego que no es aumentar la resolucion
    en gauntllet legend permite jugar 4 jugadores al mismo tiempo con expansion pak en starcraft con expansion pak permite jugar 2 jugadores que sin el no se puede
    el mas conocido perfect dark que permite jugar el modo campaña que sin expansion pak solo podes jugar multiplayer con bots
    pero el mayor logro en calidad grafica y calidad sin expansion pak se lo gana conker bad fur day que tiene graficos equivalente al perfect dark y incluso en ciertos casos lo supera SIN NECESIDAD de expansion pak
