      Well, you hear about babies that require hand-rearing because they receive more coverage as human interest stories, and captive animals don't learn everything they would in captivity, this often includes how to properly care for their offspring.

    I don't think they gave the mom a chance to raise it. They wanted to use the baby as a showcase for publicity reasons. If the mom raised it she wouldn't let them take her baby whenever they wanted. This is sickening.

    There are many protected rehabilitation centres in Borneo and Sumatra. Alina could have been sent to one of those instead of cruelly being brought up by humans to be used as an exhibit. Does your zoo explain why orangutans habitat is being lost or campaign to stop this destruction? Does the zoo contribute its profits to supporting rehabilitation centres.?

    • @luckycavy1397
      @luckycavy1397 4 года назад

      Busch Gardens is actually involved in the species survival plan for bornean orangutans.
      Additionally, there's nothing inherently cruel about an animal being hand-raised if there is concern for their wellbeing.

    • @solitairecatnaps4444
      @solitairecatnaps4444 3 года назад

      @@luckycavy1397 : I agree with this, also the existing sanctuaries are already overwhelmed with young orangutans needing rehabilitation so they can return to the forest one day.

  • @pamelaselden6267
    @pamelaselden6267 5 лет назад +4

    The zoo is doing the same thing they do at the sanctuary when a baby is orphaned because their mother was shot for destroying date palms (i.e. cutting into profits) or rescued from the illegal pet trade. I'm sure they gave the mother time to accept the baby, but babies don't live long if the mother won't nurse them. Also, all the Indonesian sanctuary videos say that they are losing habitat to the palm oil plantations. To say that a species is better off dead than in a cage, indicates a lack of knowledge of biodiversity systems. I would suggest that we stop buying products containing palm oil and other things that harm the environment. Contact manufacturers and tell them that you will no longer be buying their products.

      Yeah well don’t get too carried away. You probably can’t really compare the primates you’ve seen in the past with this one because she’s NOT A MONKEY. She’s an orangutan. Guess what else. Just like human babies, primate (which refers to orangutans, gorillas, chimps, bonobos, monkeys, and the various other species under this umbrella) babies can have completely different personalities and behaviors. Like us these things are determined by things like genetics, environment, health, how experienced and/or skillful or loving the parents (usually mainly the mothers as few primate males do much parenting), etc etc.

    Wild Orangutan Mothers never reject their babies.. I understand the c-section is an exception, but they should have returned this baby ASAP. I’ve noticed that more & more great ape mother’s babies, in captivity, r being taken to be “hand-raised” because they’ve been removed from their natural habitat. I understand that we must save these orangutans, but too, we must give them an environment as close to their natural environment as possible. The BEST situation would be to return them to a protective wild environment in Borneo, Sumatra. I’m torn about zoos as I understand that reputable zoos do contribute to the survival of a species, but there r too many “roadside” zoos &zoos that r only trying to make money & do not have the animal’s best interest at heart.

      I agree. I'm torn about this situation as I watch/read everything I can about orangutans. Did this zoo really give the Mother Orangutan EVERY opportunity to raise her baby? As stated, "this is their first baby orangutan born at the facility." Maybe they don't know as much about orangutans as they want the public think.
