I'm suffering from PTSD from a tour of duty in Afghanistan in 2009. Well I started growing cannabis to to treat my mental health in a holistic way vice pharma methods. I just started with succulents. My first two just happen to be the first two recommended in this video. It was just by chance, but I'm happy I chose the Aloe & Zebra.
Story time. I went to a wedding in AZ and the wedding gifts to the guests were little succulents from my Mother-in-law's garden. So naturally I grabbed one, I still dont know what kind it is. So, to learn how to take care of it, I found your channel. I have been loving all of the videos, not to mention my surprise that you aren't on HGTV. I now own a bunch of little succulents that decorate my windows and a little planter that I made out of a pot tray. Thank you for all of your teaching moments and videos. I love seeing your garden. #lifegoals
I just got my very 1st succulent plants. 1/2 a doz baby plants. I so appreciate you & at 72 yrs.old Id say it's about time. Never have grown any except for my aloes. Thanks so much.
Thank you Laura for this video. It has given me the courage to buy succulents after I killed every single one of the succulents that I bought last time. I realized I'm overwatering them. I think i might have more success this time
I also knocked off a couple of succulents myself last year lol. I found that it helps to just mark on a calendar when I water them, rather than trying to schedule the watering outright. It really helped force me to actually check the soil rather than deciding they look "thirsty enough." :p

Hi Laura 👋. I never really gave succulents a second thought until I watched your videos. I was motivated to try them. For Christmas my niece gave me a small terrarium so I decided it was a good omen and push for me to try my hand at planting it. I am pleased for a first timer.

Somehow I accidentally stumbled on this video while listening to a Nancy Drew audiobook, yet am grateful for that incident since I've always wanted to know more about succulents. 😄😁😃
I have all of these and they've all done really well for me inside. I had them in Florida and now in Wyoming and as long as they get good light, I haven't had a problem with the humidity levels. Thank you for sharing another great video!

Oh how I wish I could have all of these in my house! Alas, I have no useful windowsills ☹️. Our windows have only a 1/4 inch edging. I can’t keep any plants on tabletops due to having 3 cats & 1 dog. I even have my own expert climbing “Russell” who launched himself from the dining room table to throw a vase of fresh cut hydrangea blooms off a shelf that hangs 6ft from the ground! I just love the interesting, beautiful, unique look of succulents! I so want to venture into that plant realm. So, if you ever wanna discuss succulents that can be grown outside in pots or in ground, I’d be thrilled to watch that video! I yearn for this beauty!
I think this is a great list and some really good tips on which types of succulents to avoid, I've tried to make most people I know are interested in succulents aware of which plants do well indoors and it's almost the same list!
That Gasteria is impossible to kill! LOL!! It's an awesome plant for a beginner, but it does get large over time. My aloe also got so massive I couldn't bring it in for winter anymore and had to get rid of it. Which was really sad. I love your beautiful arrangements and your clear instructions. I thought my Gasteria was a Haworthia all this time.🌵
Cat Lockhart nobody wanted it! It was not a great time in life then, and I didn’t have the time or energy to split it up and save some of it. I’ve learned to limit my plants because I’m in a very small house with limited space and light and I have to bring everything back in over the winter. That aloe got so big and spiked it wasn’t a great choice for an indoor plant anymore. You can’t give something away if no one wants it. 😭😭😭
This is a great list. I find these the easiest as well but I still get the rosettes because I can’t help myself! I do have some grow lights which help but they do still stretch. When they stretch can they just be planted deeper? I just repotted a ton of babies that I have so I’m experimenting and did just that with some taller ones that I had. I was able to refresh some planters with just the babies I had from leaves! That was exciting!
I have a all of these varieties growing at home currently except the donkey’s tail which I have never seen in garden centres here. Thanks for sharing great video😃
Thanks - great advice. Donkeys tail is an interesting choice, I think you nailed it when you said "plant it and leave it". I find even bumping this plant causes leaves to drop. If I am careful and ignore it, it is lovely.

Great video, as always. I’d classify myself as a succulents intermediate - relatively good luck (good processes) indoors but I have no luck with Rainbow Elephant Bush. Not sure why. I’ve admired your use in planters. Inspired to try again. Thanks. 🙏

After watching this I have decided that I'm that person who gave my succulents "to much love" and killed them with kindness... Love this! I had a zebra plant indoors for a bit but mine curled up. (East window with a big tree across the way) I keep my succulents outside but I'm tempted to experiment with gasteria now.. Especially seeing how nice the ones in the video were! I only knew about the ox tongue kind and I didnt know if I liked or not but this video makes me want to dive into more species.

yup. I've an aloe vera in a small pot that I may need to swap up come spring time. I also have the Gasteria succulent. two beauties that don't require a lot of maintenance.

I'm good with growing aloe, jade and harworthia. Every other succulent meh. Must also keep my hubbie away from the watering can ... he loves to flood them! Thanks for the tips.
I agree leaving the Eches alone is hard. But do it for your pants budget. Every summer I get a few of them and they do amazing over the summer. Then they fall apart over the winter and four of one variety become one sprouted leaf that made it to spring.

Hello! I have a succulent that someone gave to me, so I'm not sure what the name is, but it looks like a flower with some very cool tones, some greens, blues, and purples. It's grown and grown but the taller it gets the more leaves it drops! I figure it needs pruning or something but I don't know what to do. Do you have a video on how to keep succulents from growing out of control? Thanks!
Love your videos! Succulents are expensive in Ontario, Canada. What you’ve shown here is about $100 worth. Is there a way I can get into growing succulents, so that I can have a great variety to make fairy gardens, driftwood ensembles, and other mixtures of different varieties in one display, without breaking the bank? I’ve seen propagating single leaves from jade or stone, but what about all the other varieties, like the zebra, or the sunflower looking ones, etc?

Ashley N she has tons of videos where she addresses what she does with cuttings, some succulent unboxing videos she mentions it and in some arrangement videos she talks about cuttings but almost all succulent cuttings can be treated the same way, allow the cut to callous over and dry, plant in soil and keep well watered until it forms a strong root system, then you can gradually back off on the water. Which type of cuttings specifically do you have?
@@Jack-oc2xq yes I watch all of her videos. Id like a little more in depth of these specific plants. I have cuttings of the following that she has mentioned and more. Haworthia/ Gasteria hybrid ( shape mimics haworthia but looks like Gasteria flow) , kalanchoe- chocolate soldier, crassula - lemon lime, portulacaria variegata- rainbow elephant bush. I'll go back and rewatch.
Great video Laura! Will you ever do a how-to video on Lithops? They are such odd, interesting looking plants that it would be cool to see what you'd do with them on an arrangement.
Im in z7 and my aloe tripled or more in size in less than a year, but it has slowed down a tiny bit since being brought inside last fall. Super happy still though! Went from a maybe 7 inch wide leaf spread to probably 2 feet now

Just wondering why you didn't separate it and repot. if there were a lot of plants then repot and give to friends and family.

that head planter is so lovely! the outer right gasteria the short stumpy one is actually a haworthia. gasterias leaves are never 'windowed'.
