For those consumers who are more interested in the credentials behind this product's performance than the electronics inside, here-you-go: Meets requirements of UL 2034, UL217, NFPA72, The State of California Fire Marshal, NFPA101 (One and two family dwellings), Federal Housing Authority (FHA) and Housing and Urban Development (HUD). At this writing, none of the 20-buck devices can make this claim.

You have to plug it into the wall for it to display a 0 constantly. When it isn't connected to AC power, it will display a little dot, but the 0 will appear every minute or so.

well you hope that number stays at zero is usually is set only to detect co if the number get a certain ppm over a period of time I I am dont think they will have a reading at probably less than 35 ppm to avoid nuisance alarms I think ! you should look up the product direction online but you really should see what I said above about kiide being defective!

I have two of these, and one of them malfunctioned recently, it went off saying "gas" but we all knew there wasn't anything around because it stopped after a bit, i brought it back to life a few days later with a new battery, it did the same thing, my other one didn't sound however. In fact its been pretty normal.

@@InsideOutElectronics yeah I moved it to several different locations, and it kept going off. I've already replaced it and the new alarm is doing ok.
also you can buy canned Carbon Monoxide either online or you're local hardware store. but I recommend placing the detector in a zip lock Bag and then spraying the Carbon Monoxide into the bag and sealing it to the best of you're ability, I also recommend you do this test near a window or in the garage as to vent the bag out after the test, or you can just use a fan.

To test the alarm, press the Test/Reset button. If the alarm is operating properly, you will notice
      the following:
      • The display shows three “eights”, then shows the word “GAS” while the alarm is sounding three
short “beeps”. Then, the display shows a number (usually around 200). You will then hear four quick
“beeps” - followed by five seconds of silence - followed by four quick “beeps” repeating until
reset stops. The unit will then show three “eights” for
several seconds. It will then return to monitoring for CO and gas.

The smoke/etc alarm industry has not caught up yet with the fact that tinnitus is becoming rampant in society now, what's causing it no one knows, but people are avoiding installing alarms because of it. Tinnitus can be very traumatic. People who don't have it don't understand how bad it is, it's torture. They need to invent voice prompt alarms and offer different sounds. The high piercing sound is agony for tinnitus sufferers and will cause countless of them to not buy the products.

This alarm will create a CO level display when tested. I'm not sure why they do this maybe simulating what it looks like when it sounds. But unless you know you haven't tested the alarm, you should be fine.
