  • Some thoughts on playing drums with a traditional grip (also called jazz grip, orthodox grip, unmatched grip, or conventional grip), especially focusing on the left hand and my personal take on how it works. There are MANY variations on stick grip and this is not the only one that works, but it works for me.

Great topic thanks for the video! I am a matched grip person myself, might have a lot to do with being a lefty. From what I gather traditional grip evolved because the drummer suspended the drum under his left arm. At that angle it only makes sense to hold the stink in your left hand in such a manner. Moving forward, this is why trap players tilted their snare AWAY from themselves ... being influenced by Phil Collins I played with my snare tilted TOWARDS myself. I tend it keep only slightly tilted towards me now. I do practice traditional (right hand goofy) when doing rudiments however because it just looks cool. 😏

Cool lesson. I'd actually love to learn more about the bobby thompson grip but there's not a lot about this online. I know it was very functional for many people including somebody like steve gadd too

I did not know of that one until just now. I looked it up and I get why it would be attractive to some people but it also looks like it adds a lot of tension in your hand that may or may not have a benefit that outweighs the negative consequences. Some people must believe that it does... but to me it feels unnecessary. I know of some other traditional grips that I dont talk about in this or other videos that are similarly baffling to me. Like Mexican Banda de Guerra grip... which I just don’t understand and don’t like.

@@RyanAlexanderBloom yeah I understand your point. There are indeed a lot of nuances when it comes to grips, fulcrums ecc. Probably traditional grip has even more "versions" compared to matched, but again it's a very wide topic. Thanks for expressing your point and again nice video

Thanks. I’m not sure I play any paradiddles in this video, but maybe…. Thanks again anyway.
