    Great video, I like how you can hear the train approaching from a distance even before it came into view 👍

    How do you know when a train is about to come before the level crossing even starts ringing and the lights show?

    0:19 - what is that black arm sticking out from under the wigwag lights? (Sorry - I have this sinking feeling I've gotten an answer to this already and forgotten it.)

    • @UKLevelCrossingsChannel
      @UKLevelCrossingsChannel  3 года назад +2

      It's a crossing light camera. At the end of the black rod there is a small camera which points towards the lights. I believe they're used to confirm the crossing lights are working correctly if they're ever monitored.

      This crossing isn't actually very old, the equipment dates back to 2014. The gates are not wooden but are metal but my camera makes it look like it's wooden 🙂

    • @UKLevelCrossingsChannel

      Some crossings have lights in sync but a few crossings, especially newer installs, have lights that flash independently from the other. I'm not too sure why

    If anyone lives near this level crossing (or any level crossing that is activated some time at night), it must be annoying to be woken up in the middle of the night by loud alarms, bright flashing lights and a very loud train!

    • @UKLevelCrossingsChannel
      @UKLevelCrossingsChannel  Год назад +1

      I'm sure the majority of people living beside the railway will get used to the noise over time.

    • @Sarah_270
      @Sarah_270 Год назад

      I didn't hear any alarms, or constant honking from the train. It was all quite quiet. It wasn't a loud train either, it just passed through. This isn't the US. we don't need to make a big drama.

    What is it with British crossings giving such a preposterously long advanced warning? How many vehicles actually break down over the crossing?
    It must be such a ridiculously tiny number...

    • @UKLevelCrossingsChannel
      @UKLevelCrossingsChannel  3 года назад

      The time before a train arrives depends on the type of crossing in the UK. There are automatic crossings with half barriers and without any barriers which don't involve any signalling, with the train arriving around 30 seconds after the initial sequence begins. The crossing in the video, however, is a full barrier crossing. With these crossings, they must be confirmed clear of any obstructions before the train is allowed to proceed past. As a result, the train is usually a couple of minutes away by the time the crossing is lowered and the signals have been set to proceed. This sort of monitoring prevents trains proceeding over crossings when vehicles have no means of exiting the crossing and tracks. The automatic crossings with or without half barriers allows vehicles to clear the crossing without getting trapped. Hope this helps.

      It's called safety, and it is a minute at most. At least we don't need to persistently sound horns and bell ringing for idiots who don't get a train is approaching
