age comes to everyone including the smart alec young people who think they will live forever One day the karma will come back to haunt them. Take the time to look into the face of an elderly person and give them a smile; even say a few words to them. You will be a better person for it, and you just might have made their day..

If you want some honesty. A lot of us just straight up hate the older generations for what they have done to the world and to the younger generations.
I honesty don't know why I would want to help after all the abuse thats been leveled at millennials and gen z.
The sad part is that that catches a lot of people too that are undeserving. But its whats happening.
I straight up avoid contact with older generations now.

@@no-ic5gwyes, I’d have wanted to be of more help, if I weren’t predated and almost bullied, by elderly neighbors, who’s families even wanted nothing to do with them. I am almost 60 and still working. Still I DO know what I’m headed for. In fact, worse. But I cannot and will not run a free eldercare and hospice service. I will not be bullied into submission. Side note is that some of the elderly retired early, with the expectation they’ll “make” someone provide care. Some also feel they’ll “trick” people into care, by not outright asking or demanding it. Just attempting to put a person in an “assume the position” situation, because the elderly may be dodging labor laws. And what will the elderly do, when my or future generations don’t have SS anymore? Nothing, because they’ll have taken our final years, for themselves. Some just hope you don’t know that.

@@no-ic5gw Whether you hate the elderly, or you don't hate the elderly; or whether you want to help them, or you don't want to help them, is immaterial to the fact brought up by the OP, which is one day you will BE them, and someone else will tell you that you've messed up the world and he/she hates you. As probably the OP had such feelings towards those who were old when she was young.
I believe in past lives, and I like to look at things holistically, and whenever I observe this phenomenon of interaction between young and old, I wonder whether someone like you might have been the elderly that the OP hated, and when you are old she will come round again to hate on you, and round and round it goes. I did not abort my child and they certainly won't be caring for me; they have succumbed to alcoholism and can't even manage their own life. That is not my fault and it's not entirely theirs either. Would they have been better off having never been born? How many people in their life would have instead been better off if they had not gotten involved with them? And what about all those people killed and injured by alcoholics on our road? If all of them had not been born, so much misery and destruction could have been avoided. That's because the boomers started this effect with their all about "me generation" attitude. They took power and dismissed their elders and took the fruits and let all else rot for everyone else. Millenials have been following root. Also boomers constantly complained about us Millenials from day one and we hold resentment because they had it way easier and cut off the easy way for us and we are now living in the broken economy/world they created.

MY 73-year old husband fell, breaking his shoulder and pelvis. He was hospitalized for a week, and will be in rehab for 6 weeks.
I am 69, going blind and with severe back and pelvic injuries. I use a cane and often a wheelchair because I cannot walk or stand long without severe pain. I can drive my truck but not at night due to my vision.
We have 7 kids who live all across the country. Only 1 son, 3000 miles away, keeps in touch; I've only heard from him once since this happened.
Our house was supposed to have a new roof put on and our well fixed. My husband's best friend from the military is paying for the repairs.
We haven't had running water for several years. Then my husband fell so the repairs were postponed.
I haven't seen my husband in 2 weeks. I can drive to where he is but I can't walk through the facility to get to his room. I can drive to the store but I can't walk through the parking lot and store to shop. I also struggle to carry things.
I can't do housework, and we haven't had running water. People would be shocked at our house.
We are not destitute. We have some money but no one to give us physical help.
The worst part is the aching loneliness, especially since my husband is not here. I have 3 dogs to keep me company, but I can't walk them: feeding them and cleaning up is all I can do.
Our children, neighbors, people from the church and others we know are aware he was hurt and know I can't walk or see, but no one calls to ask if I am ok, or if I need help. I am sure it will be the same once he is home. We only have each other.
This Thanksgiving I will be alone. We always had big family holidays, but now I won't even see him.
I just wish people would call and see if I am ok. If I fell here and couldn't get to my phone I could die. I guess my husband could alert someone if he didn't hear from me for a couple of days.
I am NOT SAYING, Oh, pity me!! I am just saying there are thousands of us out here like me who were good parents, but whose kids don't care about us. He served 20 years in the USAF; we worked and paid taxes all our lives. We volunteered and have helped many people in many ways. Now it is our turn, and no one is there for us. There are no services for the elderly here that I have found.
Please, if you have elderly people in your neighborhood or church, or if they don't see or walk well, take a minute and call them, or go over and just ask them if they are ok, or if they need help. Just the call showing you know they are there would mean so much. If it is a holiday, ask them if they have anyone to spend it with them.
Please, no one deserves to be alone and forgotten, but so many of us are.

Hello, ma'am, I know I can't do much for you but might I suggest something?
When you are about to go to stores or the rehab place your husband is in, you could call these places and before hand and ask for some assistance. It's not a guarantee but some of the employees wouldn't mind helping get the items you need or lead the way to by giving you a wheelchair.
Also as much as I understand your situation and feelings, it would be best if you and husband after he comes back try to pool your resources and move to a safe assisted living home for the both of you. You're simply getting too old to live independently and it pains me to hear of that condition.
You must also remember that being a good person never meant good will come to you or anyone. That's just something we tell one another to keep ourselves out of unnecessary trouble.
I know it'll mean losing so much but consider what I say so you won't get as unlucky as you are know.
Please stay safe and have a Happy Thanksgiving.

I worry about this. I am 70, single, and my kids live thousands of miles away. I don't want one of them to sacrifice their lives to come prolong mine when I can no longer take care of myself. My retirement funds were destroyed after 2008 and I am barely able to keep a roof over my head, even with social security and a part time job. Our culture is very centered around youth. Old folks are just supposed to fade away. There will soon come a day when I will no longer be able to drive a car. In a city with no public transportation, that's almost a death sentence. This same problem is happening in Japan and China as their population ages.

Your story hit me hard. I can relate. In 2008 I lost a lucrative job at a high-powered advertising agency to care for my ailing father who had recently been diagnosed with terminal colon cancer. I call it the perfect storm because although I was an exceptional employee strongly climbing the ranks, I was no match for the devastating effects of across-the-board job cuts my agency made to ride out the storm---the great recession. I worked 12-hour days and often went straight to where my father was hospitalized which was 60 miles away to the nearest VA Hospital where he was accepted and it was brutal. The emotional and physical exhaustion was tolling. I ended up losing my job. I was so young. Years later only did I realize they should have offered my FMLA since they knew I was caring for an ailing father but they did not. I was an advertising agency---go figure.

Most of the elderly people have given to their respective countries in the form of hard work for their entire lifetime and then this happens...why? These people are the most vulnerable and frail of and also a wealth of knowledge...we need to change our way of thinking and end this in our country and also in the other countries...this is a world-wide disgrace, when we especially consider that none of these countries are 3rd world countries...we should be able to fix this in our countries and still be able to help the 3rd world countries too.

Janet Browning • Even in Asian countries with traditions of respect for the elderly, even ancestor worship, the elderly are left to die alone as their families and neighbors pursue wealth and material things. Love, caring, and compassion are gone from the human heart. Read Bible prophecy. It describes it exactly: it is the End Times.
The saddest story I ever heard was about an elderly Japanese woman who killed herself. She left a suicide note taped to her TV, in which she thanked her television for the hours of companionship and entertainment it had provided her, as she had no one else. It was her only contact with the outside world. Very, very sad to feel such despair. I know how she felt. I have no family, kids grown and gone, husband in hospital for several weeks due to broken shoulder and pelvis from a fall. He is all I have. Sad to work and contribute for over 50 years and end up alone and vulnerable, with only each other and 3 rescue dogs for comfort. I never thought it would happen to us. When you get old and can no longer work or get out much, you become forgotten, isolated, invisible to others, and irrelevant.

I'm late to the party but I can answer your question. Anglo-Saxon countries, the US in particular, are individualistic societies. They encourage their citizens to "pull themselves up by their bootstraps" meaning do things for yourself. This is a double-edge sword that, on one hand, encourages self-determination, success, wealth but on the other hand, it erodes family life, inter-dependency, and interconnectedness. Great when you are young. Not so great when you are old. Mexico, like other Latin American countries, is not individualistic, so it's not as wealthy but also not as lonely. They always put family first and value their elderly.
