- The life and times of trailblazer Georgina Beyer, the first indigenous trans woman (that we know of) elected into national office - former drug user, sex worker and remarkable orator - voted in by a rural right-wing conservative electorate.
Born George, she was raised on a farm by a stern grandfather, where she learned to fish and shoot. In her late teens Beyer discovered the LBGT scene in 70s and 80s Wellington, and became for a time, a sex worker and drug user. Taking the unusual step of leaving the city, she achieved rapid ascendency, taken to the heart of the conservative rural town of Carterton, elected first as a local councillor, then as mayor, before finally becoming a Member of Parliament in 1999.
Elected into national office under a Labour Government headed by Helen Clark, Georgina never forgot her past, and worked hard as an elected official to introduce progressive legislation - including the Prostitution Reform Act, which ends the criminalization of sex workers. Georgina, who is of Māori (indigenous) descent, has been an inspiration to many. She is an example of a courageous individual who overcame adversity, marginalization and discrimination.
